1. http://www.drumparam.at/hempstone.html The process just seems to be bash a load of hemp together and it will dry hard because of hydrogen bonding (whatever that means). I can only guess that the hardness is dictated by how fine the pulp is mashed perhaps?
2. I'm going to have to let the tickets go I'm afraid.
3. I'm interested - just need to see if I can persuade another party to accompany me.
4.
CrazyKiwi You do realize wiping the hard drive will NOT stop people from being able to see what information you used to have on their right?
I have a special piece of software that scrubs each sector on the drive so the data, once deleted, stays deleted. I haven't used it yet on the PC hard drive but I will before the PC goes.
5. heaven forbid, the bottom couldn't have possibly fallen out of the Wal market could it?!
6.
That sounds like a plan Steve - can you buy these neo 10" cones from anywhere, or do I need to go to a particular manufacturer?
Blue Aran have a good stock of cones although mostly Eminence, Fane or P-Audio. It might be worth looking on Ebay for other manufacturers like Celestion or JBL? Maybe other members can suggest good suppliers as well?
7.
MB1. So thats what Green(Scritti Politti) meant ....WOOD BEEZ!.
Nope, sorry you've lost me there.
8. GK drivers don't have a spotless reputation unfortunately and have been known to go. I've played an RB400 with an Eminence 15" cone in it and the sound was pretty good. With a pair of neo 10" cones in, your cab might have yet more midrange punch.
9. £420 is fine in principle but it all depends on what someone else is prepared to pay.
10. blimey, what a useful link!
11. I'd never pay retail for one, but I do like the look and shape of the Fodera Beez Elite

Hey ho.

welcome back Tim Tell us where your boss lives and I'll send Ped around with Nelly.
13. I've just taken possession of a funky upgraded pro-quality strat clone (so much for the ambition for a Parker, but at least the necks going to be stable). So I'm selling my current guitar which I bought just because I wanted something to muck about with. I've had it for nearly a year, its very light with a slim profile maple neck and basswood body. Its a sort of budget rock guitar I guess but not bad value for the money at all. The action and set up is pretty good too. This guitar doesn't come with a case as I've only used it at home, but if you're looking for something cheap to bash chords out on it or fancy dabbling in guitar without excessive financial risk (like me) then this instrument would be ideal. I'll put up some pics tonight but this is one similar to mine from their site: Body: Solid with walnut double top Neck: Hard Maple Fingerboard: Rosewood Frets: 24F Hardware: Chrome Satin Description: Natural walnut double top body Offers accepted so don't be shy.
14.
i used to use one of these 4x12 cabs - absolutely awesome sound - in fact i'm thinking about going back down the 4x12 route again....
I SO didn't need to read that! I missed out on a metal grilled one on Ebay a couple of weeks ago which went for fairly reasonable money because I prevaricated. Oh well, hopefully a pair of Acmes will be coming soon.
15. Martin Petersen at the Bass Gallery gets a small firm who refinish roulette wheels to do his basses, so he tells me.
16. Its on the BBC news website here. "The bass player and vocalist sleepwalked out of a first floor window of the villa where he was staying in the South of France. Quinn was rushed to a specialist spinal unit in Toulouse where surgeons operated to repair two broken vertebrae as well as a smashed heel..." I can't even begin to imagine how he managed that, but its nice to know he's got the sympathy of his band mates "Frontman Gaz Coombes said: "We hope the crazy fool gets back on his feet as soon as possible. I'm sure he'll make a full recovery; he's a tough cookie."
17.
I'd love Kiwi's Smith but I've only just got a new job as of yesterday, it's not to say it out of the question but it would take me about 4 months to get £2000 but I know I'll find another one or something similar,
Mine may be sold this week if the member concerned can get down to London to collect it. But they've chosen not put a deposit down so its still available to anyone else until they get here. There's also a shedua faced Smith BT6 for sale at the Bass Cellar for £1830 but its extremely worn and had about 4 owners in the last 2 years. When I first saw it on the Bass Centre's walls, the bass was on sale for £2500 and it came back in two or three times so was a bit of a cash cow for them.
18.
In a great many ways, though this is far from 100%, if properly used, the actual wood makes less difference than might be supposed. Although not directly related to solid basses, think of Bob Taylor, he of acoustics fame, who decided it was his skill, more than the wood, that made a good guitar. So he made a top-flight acoustic out an old oak pallet from his factory dumpster. The whole guitar is made from this! And it sounded awesome. Like most of these things, it matters less than you'd think. Further confirmation comes from the likes of Bob Benedetto, doyen of archtop builders, who has stated that close-grained spruce is almost always given the nod for tops, when, in actual fact, the closeness of the grain is of no practical importance. And if he don't know, who does?
Rob Green says more or less the same thing in that there are some pieces of ash that will sound like some pieces of mahogany. But I think its important to recognise there's limits to the idea. Noone's gonna make a piece of balsa sound like a piece of ebony no matter how skilled they are.
19.
I'd love to know who played bass on 'Somebody Else's Guy' by Jocelyn Brown. Anyone know?
At a guess, Randy Hope Taylor?
20. Thats Gary's forum, its not a rival at all. Its more for jazz focussed bass players. He's had issues with maintaining the site while overseas and has his hands full with Bassday. But he can explain that himself given he's a basschat member too, Basschat is sponsoring Bassday BTW. Gary's a great bloke and the site doesn't compete with Basschat at all so I'm not sure what the problem is.
21. erm... ...to love, honour and cherish from this day on...?
22.
I'm puzzled by the Maurice Gibb one. apart from the early days i'd of thought he would have never been near a recording seesion with a bass.
He wrote all the music for the Bee Gees and took charge in the recording studio. He was a multi instrumentalist playing guitar, organ, keys and bass. He may have been the quiet one but he was also the creative glue between the three of them. His bass playing style was very similar to Paul McCartney and John McVie in that it was uncomplicated but he made sure every note was placed where it counted, to carry the groove. Listen to Jive Talking and Night Fever for good examples of his playing.
23.
IMHO the strong Gotoh bridge (pictured above, around £25) is superior to the BadAss.
Superior to the Badass 1 the Badass II has grooves also. Have an admin bump BTW
24. Marc's trying to sign up at the moment, he called me this afternoon to say he's been having problems with his email. However I've validated him and hopefully he will be able to contribute directly soon.
25. As well as Bernard Edwards (Chic/Sister Sledge), its worth checking out Verdine White (Earth Wind and Fire) Louis Johnson (Bros Johnson) Rutger Gunnarsson (Abba) Johnny Flippin (Fatback Band) Robert "Kool" Bell (Kool and the Gang) Hamish Stuart (Average White Band) and I guess you could also include Maurice Gibb (Bee Gees)
