I don't leave home without one; SWR Electric Blue - two words and is SWR short for anything? ......After regaining his composure Ham fisted Bass has switched amps checked DI levels, and has missed most of the last number; now with his 'back up amp' employed as his main amp and the gig has finished; when does he get his 'main amp' fixed? - even if it is done under warranty, with a helpful distributor and 'bendy' manufacturer what is the lead time for him to see the repair carried out given that the manufacturer is servicing his largest (home) market....
Your perspective differs to so many others here, I suspect. Hey if life give you sh*t then its time to make sh*t juice... ...er, or something like that.
Fair point any manufactured item will fail at some point - but it's when the 'product' fails mid gig that the good warranty point flounders. At that point, the warranty matters not
I'm sure Mark will stand by any warranty on the Shuttles purchased from him.
hmmm, sounds good! there seems to be quite a groundswell for ol' rockers returning!?
Old rockers never die, they just smell funny from all the embalming fluid they've consumed.
Interesting looking instruments. Has he made any basses before? I couldn't see anything in the gallery section...
I don't know that he's made any basses yet but he has already demonstrated an understanding of how important a hard fingerboard is for a fretless. He suggested Australian ironwood but thats obviously not a NZ native. He does have an old kowhai fence post he's saved which might do the job if the puriri isn't up to the job, or there's some black maire as well. All of these species (so far, apart from black maire) are indigenous to where I grew up in Canterbury as well. The dramatic topography of NZ means that there are often quite sudden changes between ecological communities.

My parents dropped me an email the other day about this bloke who lives by himself in a small community in the South Island and makes acoustic and solid body guitars from NZ native timbers. I've had a dream of owning a bass made from NZ native timbers for quite a few years (and the equivalent in english timbers too). So I checked out his website here: http://www.singingwood.co.nz/ I guess you could say he's a bit like a NZ Carl Thompson but waaaaaaay better value and probably a bit more savvy when it comes to tonal character of timbers because of his acoustic experience. Having said that, I'm not aware that he's made any basses yet out of the 80 instruments he's made in the last 7 years but he certainly seems committed to the job and delivering a good instrument. So after a quick flurry of emails, I'm about to take a leap of faith and put a deposit down on a creation of his with the following spec: 6 string 36" scale fretless laminated neck bright sounding but resonant inspired by the Fodera Beez Elite single cut shape (but may not necessarily be a direct copy) semi hollow body All NZ native timber (agreed mostly rimu construction with a puriri fingerboard) Creative Theme : love of the NZ landscape His trademark is at least one or more inlaid leaves around the instruments he produces. The exchange rate is still reasonably strong at the moment so it seemed like a very good deal. Delivery date isn't likely before Christmas so there's plenty of time to finalise things. Luckily I accepted offered a job offfer yesterday too!

Lovely bit of mahogany that!

I have no musical integrity at all, so long as I'm enjoying what we're playing and getting some sort of appreciative noise from the punters in return. Luckily being in a function band, playing soul/funk and disco covers at happy events like weddings and birthdays, couldn't make me happier.

Meshell will always get my vote for this kind of thread. Rhonda Smith This is Divinity, Beyonce's bass player doing her own thing. She's pretty awesome but very raw. Not everyone's cup of darjeeling
So what have you ordered?
Not until I get a new job. To be honest, they're almost twice the cost of a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. Would I really be getting twice the value? As Poptart pointed out, I might as well get two Shuttle 6.0 amps if I need to send to two 4ohm cabs, plus I get stereo if I ever want it too. The Neo Paks also deliver to a 2 ohm load although not in a neat 1u rack space. Hevos also mentioned they've been screwed over in the past in the UK although he didn't give any details. That would explain his reluctance to look at other distribution I guess.

I'm starting to rediscover a love of old jazz standards since discovering our keyboardist and drummer like jamming around with them too. May yet end up with a EUB one day if there's demand for a jazz trio as a support for any of our gigs. Welcome aboard Mathew

Jon Shuker told me that he can't get black chrome hardware any more because of these regulations. He can get something finished from a different process that's close to black but not as dark.

Maybe drop a line to Eubassix, he used to work out there and I believe may be returning in due course?

Hey Sarah, great to see another bassgirl on here. Mewsie, Pris, Endorka, Inca, Jojobass and GSTRing all get some company. In fact I'm going to start a new thread so y'all can reach out.
Also rather taken with a web-site that opens with: From Friday 25th of April until Saturday 3rd of May the complete staff of Hevos is abroad. After the threads about poor service at The Bass Cellar and at Sound Control, at least those shops were open!
All credit to Mr Hevos though, he DID return two of my emails during that time. Apparently they are prepared to send an amp out if paid for on 8 day approval or return.

I just make sure my amp and bass compliment each other in terms of colouring. Can play my Smith through a GK and it sounds great, can play it through an SWR head and it sounds too scooped. Can play my Jazz through a GK head and it sounds too brittle and through an SWR head, warm and sweet. Cabs seem to make a big impact on the quality of monitoring. My EBS Neo 212 is definitely easier to hear than my GK RB700 1x15 combo because it has a prominent mid-bump and doesn't sound too boomy.
Phew, I'm so glad my post got through - I hit 'submit' and got "cannot find server" - the internet service here is dreadful, and having finally got round to writing my intro I thought it was lost. Yes, I'm not far from Chiang Mai, a few miles out. I'm sure you will have a good time and find this area very relaxing. At a wild guess Crazykiwi, I'd say you are in or from NZ?
Yeah, more or less. I was born in the UK but my family emigrated when I was 10. I've been back here since 1996 mostly because of work. My plans for my trip to Thailand include a good bit of snorkelling and with any luck some fishing, but probably more around beaches nearer Bangkok, where my friends are. I'm looking forward to trying some seafood curry. I have thai friends in London who make the most incredible curries. However, before any of the travel gets booked, I have to get another job. So I'm not getting too excited at this stage. What kind of gear do you have? Do you find it hard to find other musicians to play with?

Just goes to show how far practice gets you eh? I remember seeing a clip of him performing live at a Bass Day event and he was far less technically adept. Good to see he's carrying on his fathers legacy though.
decided that it is impolite not to introduce myself, so here goes. I'm in my mid sixties, picked up the bass as a hobby several years ago, I get more involved with it each time I progress a step (in my mind). I live in rural northern Thailand, so no chance of playing with others - even if I could find a greybeard start up group - and I realise that that limits me a lot - so that sometimes I give up (for a while!). I've been listening to music for sixty years so it is difficult to identify influences - my earliest recollection is Glen Miller records at my uncles house; my first live concert was Gene Vincent; The first record I bought was Freddie Cannon 'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans'. Favourite groups were Little Richard, Fats Dominoe, Animals, Stones, Stevie Wonder, Kinks, Ian Dury (the last live act I saw), Miles Davis, Bowie, Tom Browne, Weather Report, Led Zep, too many to list, everything except most rap. I don't hear any modern western music here (last 17 years) so I'm out of touch, recently heard and bought Evernescence. I'm currently learning some Bach (fascinating to play) and also trying to learn sight reading. Everything is from books.
Welcome aboard loafer! I can't recall anyone having logged in from Thailand before, I was planning to go out there myself this year to see friends. Are you near Chang Mai?
Big question is - why all the extra holes (are they holes)?
They're screw holes for pick up covers, bridge mutes, pick guard, thumb rest etc. etc.
I play every bass I can get my hands on and have yet to play any single brand which is 100% fantastic. My favourite basses are Rickenbacker, Alembic & Sei, but I've played examples I hated from all three makers. FWIW, my Alembic is probably the best bass I've ever played, bar my 72 Ric (which is like part of me). And I've owned Wal, Jaydee, Status, Warwick, Fender, 3 Seis etc etc. I've also played several F Bass, Fodera, Overwater, Roscoe, Carl Thompson etc etc.
Sir, have you introduced yourself yet?
What did that lookout on the Titanic say - 'it's just an iceberg'??
Maybe my security settings are different then.
Because the car manufacturers used a variety of methods to stifle competition - such as refusing to honour warranties for cars imported from Europe.
I know of examples (which I'm not going to elaborate on in a public forum) where musical instrument retailers in the UK have ganged up on UK distributors who have supplied to UK based internet sellers after those sellers have passed on significant discounts (in the order of 10-15%) through their sites. I see the bullying by the UK industry as an exercise in futility while the EU allows for competition from European internet sellers. The only problem I see is where the manufacturers themselves refuse to supply any internet retailers unless those internet retailers agree to an undertaking not to undercut high street retailers. Where proof exists of anti-competitive behaviour, I believe those manufacturers should be asked some very direct questions about what is going on (or better yet, reported to the OFT and EU Competition Commission). In a transatlantic context is the sale of EB/MM basses by US based stores to non US based customers. Bass Central won't ship new EB basses outside the US because they say Ernie Ball have asked them not to. Same for many product lines from Musicians Friend as well. You only have to look at the price differences between the UK and US to understand what the game is (VAT and import duty not withstanding).
