1. I've merged the two topics to reduce the potential for confusion and double posts.
  2.
Actually that classic line was played on a Fender Precision with fresh roundwounds - spank that P! Alex
Yes you're absolutely right, and I knew that but didn't check my typing before pressing the post button.
  3.
Lots to choose from. Your bass and how you play it matters more though! Alex
I agree. Typical disco era basses were just the popular instruments of the time, ie. most of Leo Fenders designs - Fender Precision w/flats, eg. If Ya Think I'm Sexy (Rod Stewart), Fatback band tracks Fender Jazz w/flats, eg. Forget Me Nots (Patrice Rushen), some Abba tracks Musicman Stingray w/roundwounds, eg. many Chic and Brothers Johnson tracks. Louis Johnson had a very bright zingy sound whereas Bernard often had very dead strings. plus occasionally an Alembic would get used eg. Blame It On The Boogie (Jackson 5). Amp wise, Acoustic, Fender, Musicman and Ampeg would have probably been favoured. Acoustic were solid state and the rest were valve powered. Solid state back then were very expensive to mass produce. It wasn't until the advent of mass manufacturing developed for the computer industry that solid state amps became a lot more affordable. Cab wise there wasn't anything specifically disco either but HF horns weren't around then. So cabs would include 4x12 (eg. Fender), 2x15 (eg. Acoustic folded design) or 8x10 (eg. Ampeg). I'm not sure about how popular 4x10's were back then. Maybe some of the members who were gigging around then would like to chip in too?
  4.
Wise words as usual CK, you old sage you.....
You got the old bit right
  5.
It's just starting to look like the original Alembic MK Signature bass now, which looked like the Jaydee Supernatural....
Hehe, wasn't the original Jaydee designed to look like an Alembic? I agree about the body shape but I personally prefer wide bodied basses. Small bodied basses feel too cramped.
  6. I'm slowly growing used to the idea of a 6'er even though I'm on my third. I don't like the extra wide fingerboard but I do like the additional freedom the extra C string gives me. I can even attempt to play chords! I'm far from being any kind of session monster.
  7. Drunk In Charge of Keyboard ?
  8. That bass really is sex on a stick, and I'm not just saying that because its a Fodera. The body shapes of some of their basses really push my button. How about two Smith BSR5's in trade?
  9.
It was put to me thus by my live production tutor (I live in Leeds): 'If you look at the gig listing for any given night, there's a good 20 to 30 bands playing. There are plenty of venues, but the thing that's thin on the ground are punters. People simply can't go and see that many bands in one night, and since there's rising costs of living they are less likely to spend the time and money going to see a new band at a small venue.' This of course means that smaller venues simply aren't making the money. I've been told that Joseph's Well no longer exists for this reason, along with a few others. It also means that bigger venues or bands are charging big money for tickets. For example, I saw that Extreme are playing at the new Carling Academy, but the tickets were listed on one website at £70! I'm as much a fan of 80s hair metal as the next guy, but I'm not sure I could fork out that much.
Well I don't know about Mr Joe Public but if I wanted a live music night out and had the choice of £70 to see an international early 90's act or an entertaining local act for a fiver I think I'd know what represented the best value for money.
  10. That looks nasty, I'd hope Sandberg at least give you the dignity of a reply. If not, drop me a PM and I'll try to "facilitate" the communication process.
  11. so Series II 5 strings were made?
  12.
The point I am making is that the credit crunch is a global excuse for everything at the moment including a tight fisted landlord trying to shaft 6 muso's!!!
I hate to say it, but the more cynical we become as consumers/self employed, the less likely we are to be screwed over. However, who wants to live in a society of cynics? Nothing you say would ever be taken at face value!

    6 string basses
You need to state minimum standards for posters who might follow up your question.
I can't reasonably anticipate all the ways in which members might interpret the original post. All I'm trying to determine is whether there's any consensus over what makes a decent 6 string.
My experience is limited, but it felt really nice. Unsurprisingly this £499 (about £700 new?) instrument felt a bit nicer to play than my £120 s/h (about £250 new) bass. I didn't find the neck too wide at all, in fact it felt really comfortable. I was sitting so didn't feel the weight, but the whole thing just felt "right". Again, I'm not experienced enough to tell, but it felt well set up.
Thanks
  14. Smiths = bad attitude.
  15. Its no bloody wonder we have a recession if people insist on being pessimistic rather than seeing the bigger picture. I really wish I'd plunged my house deposit into gold 4 years ago, I would have doubled my money by now.
  16. lol loving the banter
  17. Not quite sheep, but close enough.

    6 string basses

yeah its freaky but over the course of 6 strings, an extra mm can make a difference I guess! I really like the Alembic spacing BTW, less stretch required but it didn't work on the Elan I owned. The B and E strings were definitely too close together.

    6 string basses
Thanks. I might measure mine tonight to see if mine's tight or wide. I always thought it was wide, but 17mm seems like a big gap to me!
As Eude says, its measured centre to centre. I asked Jon for 17mm to be the tightest spacing at the C and G string and for the remainder of the strings to be adjusted for gauge as they get thicker. Its one of the other advantages of having a bass with mono rail bridge units. Alembics have string spacing of 16.5mm and thats pretty narrow, something like a Yammie TRB has spacing around 18 or 19mm IIRC.
  20.
It seems there isn't going to be a headless version...
Well thats a bit disappointing. The outline around the bridge looks a little odd if that is indeed the case.

OKdoke, looks like the upgrade has staunched the flow of bogus accounts so I've removed Admin validation from user account signups. There's a chance that some accounts may have slipped through while we were still learning to recognise what was bogus. Hopefully though we've cleaned up most of the problem.
  22. whats that? any indication of prices?
  23. I want one, in headless, but how does one reach the 24th fret ?

    6 string basses

My custom Shuker will have string spacing around 17mm. I prefer narrow string spacing it seems although its not as easy to pop. I can pop on the Spector without too much trouble.

The forum has been upgraded, I'm going to keep the Admin validation on new members for the rest of the day to see if the upgrade actually does the job its supposed to. The main change in the upgrade is a more sophisticated Captcha feature so hopefully that should answer your question Waldo?
