That is one hell of a fascinating article! There's a bit of information here too.

In addition to Red's post, Simon can make necks using molds or the lay on method over a wooden or epoxy foam core. For one off necks, the lay on method is probably better. If you can't give him a core to use as a master then he will need to produce one for you.

I had one on my jaydee jazz bass. It was a bit of a disappointment as it wasn't very stiff and kept flexing with temperature changes, despite having a truss rod. I mated it to a swamp ash body which was also a big mistake as the combination didn't make for a particularly warm sounding instrument. You could try dropping a line to Fibresonixx or Simon Farmer at GUS Guitars as well. You will be looking at about 500 quid for a custom neck.

Here's a quick sketch I did this afternoon of what I hope the finished bass will look like:

Zero frets are supposed to solve set up issues with setting nut height.

I like the tone of Guild Pilot basses, they're amazing value second hand. I can't comment on the quality of the Dearmond basses though. All the Washburn T basses I've heard sound a bit boxy to me.

That would work if everyone had a fixed IP address. However many ISP's provide dynamic IP addresses meaning a subscriber is assigned a new IP whenever they turn on their modem and connect. So for a number of members living in the same neighbourhood (such as Northampton) and connected to the same Internet Provider (such as NTL) banning on IP would potentially block any members who were assigned that IP address. Obviously we don't want to block the IP addresses of members who haven't been involved in spamming but live in the same locality. Also it would be quite easy for a spammer to disconnect and reconnect in order to be assigned an IP that isn't blocked. Besides which these particular spammers have routed through overseas servers so even if we did ban on the basis of IP number, the spammers could simply select another unbanned server through which to route their connection. I personally suspected the spammers were Russian in origin. Anyway, no more problems since the forum was patched so hopefully this will be the end of it.
They are 800watts program at 8 ohm.
If AlexClaber sees you typing that, you'll be sorry. +1 on the EBS Neo212. Its my only cab, super sensitive so you can use it with 100w heads as well as 600w heads. Just wish the bracing inside it was a little sturdier so it didn't vibrate as much.
I happened to be chatting in a fairly polite manner to one of the guys behind the counter - discussing said Aria, mentioned that I have a number of Arias in my posession; chap asks me how many basses I've got, he is told current number! Other ruder staff member then passes comment!
OK, fair enough. FWIW I'm deliberately a bit coy about the number I own because even at 10 I get funny looks from people if I tell them!

Nick, do you normally mention to total strangers that you own 57 basses?
-
I've looked at his site often and wondered about making the Boxer guitar combo. He's only 20mins drive from me and while I have the time I should really be taking advantage of it... ...what was he like to work with?

There's some pretty god playing here from someone we all know. EDIT: Oops was that a freudian or a typo?
That is soooo damn funky. I just had to grab a bass and start playing along. Thanks for the linkage. Do you have any more stuff by him?
I've been looking but haven't found anything yet. If I do find more stuff, I'll post it on the forum.
Sorry Kiwi, thought I had done a mix of both. Was trying to be as "this is only my opinion and experience" and non confrontational as possible. Slap on the wrist accepted.
no slap on the wrist needed, I'm glad the discussion is happening. Just would prefer the potential for confrontation is reduced. FWIW, just so people don't read into my motives, I'm not Christian by any means and I've recently lost a close friend of 20 years who became very religious because I hold fairly strong opinions myself but as hatori says, its mostly about human nature. I've met inspirational christians and I've met complete right wing baptist zealots. Regardless of the belief system it comes down to interpretation at the end of the day. I see nothing wrong with wanting to be nice to people even if I don't share their beliefs and for me, regardless of the beliefs held, that's where its at. Same for bass playing. Its all about the person and what inspires them to push themselves.

back on the OP please? Belief and bass.

Larry was Prince's bass player for a while around 2000 along with Maceo Parker on Sax. Prince seemed intent on usurping James Brown as the Grandfather of Funk. BTW, that clip is from Prince's Y2K DVD, one of my favourite performances which was held at Paisley Park to see in the Millenium New Year.
I try not to watch Saturday night telly, even if I'm in .. So which of those sad losers trying to give their tired and dying career a boost was it?
Craig Revel Horwood, his career is still in the ascendency I believe, though.
How was it? Bloody bizarre, that's how. New gig on a recommendation in Fareham. Should have checked it out, but hadn't as it's a long old trek for all of us. ...Most bizarre point of the night? How to choose, but probably the youngish (they all look young to me ) metal fan who was pissed when we arrived and got more so as the night progressed. I looked over during the second set and he had dozed off with his head resting on the shoulder of one of our regulars who was sat looking a tad bemused. We finished and while we were packing up he came too (just), stood up, staggered over to the fruit machine, flopped his dick out & took a piss against the machine, then collapsed back where he had been snoozing and went back to sleep. Rest of the pub, including the landlady didn't turn a hair and when we left he was still asleep in the corner and probably going to be left there for the night.
I was born at Blackbrook Maternity hospital in Fareham. I grew up in Warsash too so know the Portsmouth-Soton area like the proverbial back of my hand. Some rough Gosportish parts in Fareham if you aren't too choosy because of the MOD's presence.

In all seriousness: 1. Sharay Reed - I haven't wanted to play like anyone so much since the mid 80s. His funk is pure, dripping, nasty, fermented seepage and it leaves a persistent stain behind. It's what bass is all about for me and if I could have one ounce of this guy''s talent I would die a happy and contented bass player. 2. Gene Perez - he swings like a master and I think a worthy contender for Bernard Edwards funk crown now Meshell has gone all rocky. He's the only reason I wanted to own a jazz bass. 3. Bernard Edwards - still the groove master. RIP. I would have normally listed Meshell but her latest albums have left me a bit untouched as she gets rockier. I would have also listed Julian Crampton but his playing is very riff based and I've moved on from that.

FWIW: and its not my intent to pour scorn on Mr Sheenan either. He's reasonably open about his beliefs and respectful of others beliefs which is laudable. However with some of the gospel vids on you tube how can anyone not be moved such as by the stunning example below? No question in my mind about the power of belief. (He types in the hope it brings the topic back round to the original post...)

If the commitment and travel isn't a problem then why not? I wouldn't worry about TV appearances and the rest of it, cross that bridge when you come to it. You have no idea about how long the thing is going to be together for anyway.

If you can handle the weight, I would suggest a GK RB700 combo. Loud, crisp and clean plus it has a growl knob if you need it. I would still have mine if it was lighter. I had mine with an 210RBH cabinet (which actually sounded very similar to the 1x15) and it was too loud for most gigs I did. Didn't break into a sweat with the B on my 5 strings.

kudos to him and all for being what he is but I didn't connect with it. If he played less notes I might have appreciated it more I think. I was impressed with Tal though, she's a good player. Sensitive and she's got impeccable timing. The runs she played with Jeff matched him perfectly.

I've had experiences where I've recorded on time perfectly first take, and other times where I've effectively been flogging a dead horse (usually because of fatigue). The thing about recording is not to take it too personally, its impossible to hide anything! Even lapses in concentration during the take are clearly audible in the timing and attack transients. I'm sure seasoned session musicans can do it though!

duly shifted. I can recommend EBS neo cabs, I've had compliments on mine and I know other EBS players have as well. Plus, they're SUPER light. But I don't think the 2x10 on its own would be enough. I've personally found most 2x10 cabs generally too boomy - even stacked. However a pair of Acme 2x10 cabs were definite exceptions and great value second hand if you can upgrade to a more powerful amp (400w minimum needed per cab). The GK RBH cabs are also worth looking at - not a lot of difference in sound between a 2x10 and a 1x15, both very solid and tight sounding if you can handle the weight of them. A 2x10 and 1x15 set up is a nice match too, broad frequency response with a nice mid-hump if you get a 2x10 that is loosened up nicely.
