I've heard that there is nothing remarkable about Marcus's jazz bass at all. Its very bog standard sounding even with the preamp mod.

Its a gamble at the best of times.

For those that aren't aware of the significance, Lee has a screensaver on his laptop featuring people he's met all flipping him 'the bird'. Couldn't help but notice the fingerboard wasn't slab. Is this typical for a '61?

Best way is to buy a USB mixer/soundcard. They're not cheap though, even second hand but you will have independent control of each track after you record.

They're very uncommon, where did you find it? The trem bar bit can be drilled out of the hole if its done carefully. You'll probably need to get one made but its not difficult. Get some stainless steel rod, cut and bend it to shape and tap the right thread on the end. Someone here might even be able to do it for you.

Its not important, just choose one.

How about a bolt on maple neck, an ash body, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, mirror scratch plate and a badass bridge?

The pitch shifted signal is a little cheesy if the tone is set too trebly but in the middle of a band mix its hard to tell. You can also send the shifted signal into a separate distortion unit but I've not had very good results doing that with a keely modded Boss DS-1.

Yep I've done it. It sounded OK but more like a cheap late 70's amplifier. A bit woolly. If you have a decent spec laptop then get Native Instruments Guitar Kontrol. You'll have the best of both worlds then.
