The World’s First Fretted / Fretless String Instrument
Kiwi replied to beerdragon's topic in Bass Guitars
Of course having both options on one bass will result in a compromise one way or another but I still think it's a cool idea.
I can think of at least one way to partially solve the problem.
I once asked Paul Reed Smith to make one, this was 16 years ago, and he told me where to get off...
Obviously he has better things to do. -
The World’s First Fretted / Fretless String Instrument
Kiwi replied to beerdragon's topic in Bass Guitars
It works on the basis of rotating the frets around. Good point about the fret wear but if the frets are made from stainless steel then they are unlikely to wear quickly. The biggest issue for me would be consistency in the action of the strings between both modes. If you set the action for fretted mode then it will be the height of the frets too high when in fretless mode. -
Probably Ashdown would be worth a first look. SWR is very scooped, EA and EBS are very hifi sounding. Can't comment on how well you could emulate the sound you need with the TC head unfortunately.

The tutorial I'm using recommends using an aux channel to route the MIDI output to an audio track. The problem for me in setting up MIDI is that there are many naming options and many setting options and its sometimes not clear what is a name and what is a setting. I can still get things set up but its not clear for example, why I can't hear a piece of hardware when I've set up the I/O options, assigned the right MIDI channels on the hardware and set up the audio channels OK. Yet when I select a MIDI channel that is not the channel assigned to that particular piece of hardware, I can suddenly hear its audio output... ...and despite saving the settings as part of the session, I can never seem to recall them! It was so much simpler in Cubase.

LOL Just don't go there. I know its tempting though. I see some topics that I know I need to steer clear of myself sometimes. I'd suggest its better just to focus on the things you enjoy and forget about the rest. Its just a webforum

Technically its possible but we can only control access to forums by setting up a new class of membership. If we get a whole lot of requests for different permissions from different individuals, it would be very time consuming to set up, particularly if people change their minds frequently about what they want to see.

Hmm, I think you might need to describe how the parametric settings are changed above and beyond what is available through the front panel. Otherwise I still don't understand what the benefits of extra eq. tweakability in a gigging environment might be. Otherwise three user settings = three models of bass.

There's also Alan Knight. Does relicking but works off squier and fender parts.

Hi Rob and welcome

Mine's 26 since 1990... Alembic - 2 Celinder - 3 Jaydee - 2 Modulus - 3 Musicman - 4 Pedulla - 2 Shuker - 1 Smith - 3 Spector - 3 Status -1 Warwick - 1 And a parts bass - 1 Almost all of those (apart from a Jaydee) have been bought since 2003. I could include two more before 1990 (Westone Spectrum II and a Sierra Precision). Amps get way too complicated when rack systems are included. But standalone heads include Burman Pro4000 (x3) Eden WT800 Gallien Krueger RB700 combo (x2) Genz Benz Shuttle 6 Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ and Strategy 400 SWR Bass 350 Trace Elliot AH250 and V8

I just rediscovered a whole load of bass samples on my network drive this evening including smiths, the alembic, and the skarbye bass so may well end up uploading them here.
Very smooth player, i think he owns the very first 6 string wal too
I've only seen him with a pair of Wal 5's although I think he may have mentioned the Wal 6 in an email. He's watching this thread though so with any luck, maybe he'll chip in at some point.
many fine musicians relocate to Aotearoa we also have ... that guy from Frankie Goes to Hollywood
That might be stretching the definition of fine musician a little. Roland Gift from FYC had a property up in the Coromandel for a while. Joe Walsh settled in NZ for a year or so when he was gigging with Herbs. Youth came over in the late 90's to check out some ethnic sounds. And lets not forget Shania Twain owns a place just outside Queenstown (although given the impending divorce, I'm not sure how long that will remain so). I also remember we had some UK session guitarist relocate to Chch in the early 90's and make a complete hash of opening his own recording studio there. I think his name was Billy...something, said he'd backed Boney M. All I remember was that was my first meeting with a real pro musician from the UK and he was a bit snotty. By contrast we had another session guitarist whose mother taught me in primary school, Mrs Rasmusson. Her hubby Hal had backed Heatwave at one point. They were both fantastic people. Shame she was only temping.

I managed to get my recording studio working over Easter, I recorded a few samples of the Spector just so people could see what I'm going on about with these coil splitting mods. Each pickup has three settings; inside coil/both coils in parallel/outside coil, so this recording gets a bit complicated when I explain it...but here goes anyway. 1. Both pickups and all coil options Bridge pickup inside coil (left) selected AND each of the three options on the neck pickup (left/both/right) Both bridge coils selected AND each of the three options on the neck pickup (left/both/right) Bridge pickup outside (right) coil selected AND each of the three options on the neck pickup (left/both/right) The 3 band Noll parametric pre was set to flat. 2. Bridge pickup alone Inside/both/outside coil (or left/both/right if you prefer) 3. Neck pickup alone Outside/both/inside coil (or left/both/right if you prefer) 4. Plus a few recognisable bass lines for fun "Jaydee mode" - This is with the outside (right hand) coil in the bridge pickup by itself. Sounds a little Jaydee like to me although with the parametric eq, I can dial out some of the harshness and dial in more warmth. "Stingray mode" - This is with the inside coils of each pickup selected. It's not identical to a stingray because the eq is flat. But it sits in the mix in the same way and, again, I can use the parametric to tweak things. "Tobias mode" - This one is with the outside coils selected. 5. Recorded track - both pickups, both coils in parallel ("Smith" mode) And this was a test track I recorded last week with my sound dialed in on the parametric eq. No apologies for how cheesy the track sounds, thats just how it came out! Warning: gratuitous whammy bar action on the guitar solo.

http://www.wimp.com/volcaniccrater/ I'd imagine this might be the biggest GAS hit of 2010 so far.

I've shown him this thread and he says "I'm very flattered! Nice to be remembered like that."

same bloke he also did the bass on the Blackadder and Red Dwarf themes, Howard Goodall composed them.

He's here in NZ in the same town as me. Radio New Zealand interviewed him recently and the result was broadcast today. Its well worth listening to if you like anecdotes from sessions and tours. Rob Burns has 28 years of experience as a session musician and composer. He has played with Dave Gilmour, Pete Townsend and Jon Lord and Ian Paice as well as composed TV soundtracks for Blackadder, Mr. Bean and Red Dwarf. Some of his former students play for bands and artists such as Basment Jaxx, K.T. Tunstall, Chaka Khan, Moby and Radiohead... so that includes our own Stuart Clayton, Dave Marks and (for those who know her) Svetlana Vasselieva http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/highlights/musical_chairs3
