1. A hard fingerboard. Ebony or (even better) epoxy/poly coated and a single coil bridge pickup.
2.
because you like the sound ?
+1 So figure out whether you like the sound of distortion on an alembic to begin with and then figure out what you like best.
3. PreCBS Fenders got popular initially due to baby boomer nostalgia, not because of the build quality. Fender was set up for mass production in the 50's and they understood the value of market saturation in beating out competition. The high profile they had in the 50's got translated into aspiration 20 years later when those baby boomers had disposable income. Greedy retailers and purchase post rationalisation pushed up the prices which then made them seem even more desirable to prospective owners and so the cycle continued. I don't think we'll ever find the same set of circumstances happening again. But there are isolated pockets of aspiration in certain limited edition instruments by other makers. Its got nothing to do with build quality and everything to do with status - a bit like some classic cars. Pre 90s Ferrari's have crap build quality but that doesn't stop them being a chick magnet.
4. I left a band because the drummer wouldn't play more quietly...even when it was clear we were tighter as a result.
5. Does anyone know if the Deep Impact has a single waveform?
6. If I didn't think they were good, I wouldn't have two of them. Fodera/Smith sound (after mods) for Ibanez money. To be honest though, you could replace the pound sign with US$ for what they go for in the states.
7. what was the original colour?
8. BTW, Mike sent the following PM: Will I started out servicing the amps he was running when he had the Greg Burman soel Bald Real Blues, I played harmonica and a Vox Continental orgen sometimes but most of my time was keeping the amps workin the cabs in one piece and I was driver / mech Thats when he desided to make som good substanshel cabs and finaly and amp that produced the sound he wanted 3 gain setting in the amp allowed clippind and compression without overloading. Thats what the sound was all about?
9.
The guitarist from the current band used to have a Burman Pro 501 combo amp. He sold it in the late 80s and has regretted it ever since. The sound was exquisite - everything from that creamy Fripp type infinite sustain to gritty overdrive to a cutting clean sound cleaner than a bottle of Cillit Bang in an operating theatre. The three stage input gain was to die for. Heavy little git though for its size .
I can't get infinite sustain out of mine, but I can get a raw sounding crunch with the KT77's. The only thing I wish it had was a 'Fender Twin' setting for spanky Nile Rodgers moments but a Tech21 Blonde pedal might do much the same thing.
10.
Interesting stuff. No problem getting KT77's , JJ now make one and its very good. Probably would sound good for a bass amp as they seem to be halfway between a 6l6 and an el34. Would love to get my hands on a Burman.
It might be worth you asking an owner, if there's a Bassbash near you. The KT77's are exceptional for bass, very clear and neutral sounding. I've noticed some hi-fi buffs tend to get a bit overexcited about them in the way that hi-fi buffs tend to with esoteric components Asking prices were as high as 250 quid for a NOS pair of Gold Lions on Ebay.
11. i don't understand why the neck pocket is completely painted.
12.
Haven't ried a Nash but I know a UK guy who does the same thing.
Alan Knight will do the same thing using squier or aftermarket fender parts. Nice bloke too. http://www.myspace.com/bigal024
13. Pop over to Ozbass forum and have a word to Aussie Mark, he's got two up for sale at the mo. http://www.ozbassforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3736
14. Lollars if you would like a vintage vibe. Otherwise not a lot in it between Seymore Duncan, DiMarzio and EMG Jv if you prefer something a little more aggressive.
15.
use the spare £700 on custom pickups?
No need, some Lollars will do the job nicely.
16.
if a 2 x 18" isnt a "big bass cab" then i'd like to know what kind of bohemoth is!
A 4x15? Do a search for other Burman threads and all will be revealed.
17. Im surprised he didn't have it routed for an EB0 pickup near the neck.
18. Walman, EBS freak or Silverfoxnik might have details. I've got Herbies email but never had a reply. I suspect calling him might be better. Would love to see the result of your work though Wes, I've hankered after a replica of his bass for a long time, especially if you can get the LPB finish oxidised properly.
19. aaaahm, looking doubtful for me, unfortunately.
20. nice score - the black n gold were easy to find for a while but supply seems to have dried up. Bass Central had some that seemed difficult for them to shift for a while. I fancied the 5 string version for a while...
21. Thread duly moved. Take it easy on him though guys, his intentions in posting were benevolent and we all know some people out there have difficulties with writing. It would have taken a little bit of bravery to contribute knowing there was a risk people might criticise. Mike - welcome and thanks for posting. Nice to have a collection of people here with an interest in these amazing amps!

+1 one of the best pics I've ever seen of Si.
23. Its very 'pretty', I wouldn't say its beautiful though.
24.
My pass-the-bucket list of shame: - That stupid Warwick Reverso abomination. - Alembic Dragon's Wing. - Big AL - Bongo - Everything made by these people and these people. - Much of BC Rich's output. - Sparkly Italias etc. Rich (refusing to 'justify' my 'coffee table' bass to anyone)
Oh a big plus one to all of that as well. The Big Al I really don't understand...its worse than the Modulus Vertex
25. My 2p: Wish basses. No amount of excuses about finishing can hide a total lack of aesthetic awareness. Burns basses. The styling is very fussy. Fenders are simpler, functional, elegant and look a load better by comparison. Any number of mutant Fender copies with musicman pickups and odd looking scratchplates made by US rednecks who can't tell the difference between weird and cool. Pretty much anything by Gibson apart from the Thunderbird Single cuts apart from the Fodera Beez Elite and the Marleaux Mbass Modulus Vertex Lodestone basses Rick Turner basses Atlansia basses
