Close call - Cutlass birthdate is 1982 (with Modulus manufactured neck) with Status being 81 - the Status folks may be clearer around the dates. Is 1981 the birth of GMT or was Rob going before this? Geoff Gould (founder of modulus) apparently presented first graphite necked bass in 1977... so it looks like MM and Status were lagging by a few years.
First graphite necked bass was an Alembic made in 1976. It was sold to John McVie in 1977. Bassstar necks were available from late 70's to early 80's as after market add ons and full instruments - Fender copies with alembic electronics and modulus necks. Cutlasses allegedly date back to 1980 also but I've yet to see any dates on necks that go back before 1983. I did own an Artist Cutlass c/- Cliff Williams that was basically a cutlass neck mated to a preEB body. Neck date was 1984, body date was 1979. Alembic continued producing graphite necked basses until around 1985 although very, very low numbers from 1984 onwards due to issues with Geoff Gould and quality control that impacted on both Alembic and Musicman's decision over whether to continue offering graphite necks. Steinbergers were being marketed from 1980 onwards. The idea for resin injected, composite necks was being developed by Ned while he was working for Stuart Spector in the late 70's. Youtube vids here: http://basschat.co.u...h__1#entry45992 Have no idea about Status, a 1981 date would be a bit of a revelation. Mark King played them from 1983 onwards I believe.

I saw it too which was very saddening. I don't know how many of you are FBriends with him but the one thing that really struck me was how open he has been. Its just great that he's so approachable and generous. He's one of the 70's greats, popularising double stops as well as playing on Donald Fagen's Nightfly and Steely Dan's Aja. I really hope he recovers with all faculties fully intact.

Because I like to choose which kidney sounds better?

They're my precioussssssss!!!! Seriously though...I'm just interested in learning more about what works for me in terms of sound and design. Haven't quite got there yet in terms of combining both although I'm extremely close. I think the next step will be to build my own...watch this space sometime over the next 12 months.

Definitely odd Jimster. I would generally bring my own regardless though...especially if you have a U5, its not likely a studio could better that to be honest.

Haven't gigged for 2 years. Wasn't living somewhere there were any bass players needed. Where I am now is a different story but I have just bought a house so need weekends free to knock the place into shape.

I'm getting on average 3-4 emails every day in the admin inbox from people who are replying to notifications that they've received a PM instead of replying to the original message. At the moment all replies receive a automatic response but in 2 weeks I'll set the admin account to automatically respond and delete these emails as they're clogging up the inbox. They will become a nightmare to weed out every week if it continues. Unfortunately we don't have the same email system as Ebay or Facebook and messages won't be received by their intended recipient.

Is the sound of the cab replicated when mic'ing?
Kiwi replied to 211dave112's topic in Amps and Cabs
In a word, no. The mic placement has a significant influence on the tone that is recorded. -
Pedulla Buzz-Tobacco-Sunburst 4 strings
Kiwi replied to FrederikVanDuuren's topic in Basses For Sale
They ARE the best fretless on the market IMHO, followed closely by the Steinberger XL2A. Replace the barts with something more hifi though if you like your mids and sparkles. Change the pre to one with sweepable mids for extra control. Superb build quality, incredible necks, each one is hand made. Very low production volumes each year. The Wals are slightly growlier thanks to the mahogany body but lack the same sustain. -
Good man, enjoy.

If you can't sort it out with the truss rod, take out the plastic fret fillers and put maple/ash veneer in. If that doesn't sort it then other options are: A new and very thick fingerboard from ebony, pau ferro, gonzales or similar dense hardwood A stainless steel fingerboard on top of the old one. and/or reinforcement using stainless steel or graphite composite rods in the neck.

Jens Ritter Masterclass at ICMP 3rd November
Kiwi replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in General Discussion
He's a bit like a master chef of luthiers to me. Always uses the best ingredients and pushes the boundaries a little. -
Andy can always do you something that suits if one of the standard offerings doesn't. I love the pickups, they're very honest.

Advice from builders on creating templates...?

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/152124-pre-cbs-guitar-cloning-possible.html#post1714912 Found quite a bit of information here, as it happens. -
Hi there, I've been planning around the idea of building a bass body and have some wood to make a first start. I'm hoping it will have a spector/warwick like radiussed top which presents its own set of issues that maybe I'll ask for advice on when I'm closer to that point. Right now however I'm focussed on template creation.

Do I need a smooth edge on any MDF template that I create after its been sawn out of the flat sheet?

If so, whats the best way of getting that smooth edge without having access to a drum sander? 80 grade sandpaper?

How much other information should I include on the template apart from body outline? Is it worth including neck pocket, pickup locations etc?

How did you get the neck pocket to line up perfectly on the centre axis of the template?
Many thanks!

My understanding is that sensitivity varies across frequencies. However my EBS cabs are rated at 103dB and I have great results with my 140w Burman valve heads through them. Conversely I've had poor results for a pair of Acme B2 cabs rated at 98dB. Yes the ratings are general but they've been OK to work by for me.
-
I'd suggest something that has a bit of sensitivity if you need a little volume. Don't go for anything less than 100dB. Alexclaber or others will probably talk about excursion and cone area.

Peavey make some great power amps, their Class D stuff produced in the mid 80's was way ahead of its time. I'll agree about the weight issue for cabs and combos. I wanted very much to like their instruments as they're well designed but I have never been happy with their pickups.
