No disrespect to the luthier and the customer but it does not do anything for me. Nice looking wood though.
Agree'd - whenever I see a singlecut I just think 'John Merrick' for some reason. Looks beautifully put together though - someones going to love it. Pluck
Gherson TallyCrap P - maybe. Looks tidy anyway: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120320213554
I'd spotted that one - thought I'd take a punt. Very little information about on Gherson. From what I can gather so far they are Italian/US/Japanese made, and were low/mid/high quality knock-offs of the usual suspects including Ric's plus some mental double-necked SG thing ( rather like this on 'ere on t'bay ). So not much to go on, but the brand definately is ( or was ) Italian, and it looks quite nice in the rubbish eBay snaps One piece Alder....? Anyway if it turns out to be nice I'll post pics, otherwise I'll hide it away and pretend it never happened! Pluck -
In my not very experienced experience, I've always got more/better tone with a slightly higher action. Every bass I get, I always set it up as low as I can get it ( which usually equates to medium-low ), and then up it marginally. For me that's about the sweet spot for tone/playability. Pluck

Just a head-ups on this one in case you're thinking of taking the gamble. No idea what it actually is, but one thing it definately isn't is a Tokai, regardless of what the expert says Here Pluck -

I've just twigged that you all are talking about that Bass shop on Denmark St! I have to be honest and say that IME most of the shops on Denmark Street ( apart from the prices ) are actually OK in terms of the way the staff deal with customers. Apart from that bass shop, that is. They are actually worse than that place near Liverpool St. that closed down a while ago, and that really is quite some achievement. It's almost comedically bad. I was in there the other day having a giggle at the prices of the second-hand stock when some guy came in and asked some question or other... can't remember exactly what... pretty average kind of question.... and the guy that answered honestly couldn't have been more haughty and puffed up if he'd tried. Amazing. Customer walks out, sales guys forget I'm stood behind the middle block of stuff, and the minute the guy is out of earshot start bitching about what a pillock that ( potential customer ) was - went on for about a minute. Be under no illusions - these guys do not like you - go somewhere else. The place needs to go under, let some new folk have a try. Pluck

How much would you pay for a set of tuners?

Comedy prices! Not only that, but how on earth would a prospective buyer ever work out if they were the real thing? Pluck -
Trade some strings?
sgt-pluck posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Rather than bin them, anyone want to trade some strings? I've got a set of Elixir Nano's 45 - 105. Ten minutes was all it took to decide that these aren't for me, so they are pretty much brand new. Also a set of Roto Jazz 77 flats, again 45 - 105, again not been on a bass long although I can't remember exactly how long as it was months ago I tried these. Both sets to fit normal 4 inline Fender necks. I'm after rounds - nickel preff'd but not fussy. 40/45 - 100/105. Got anything you didn't like? Cheers, Pluck -
Ooops - nearly forgot. I bought an Ibby Blazer from Pete last week. Great bloke to buy from and chat to - wouldn't hesitate to do business with Pete again. Cheers, Neil
I don't know how they do it - Very High Quality at Very low price(s) - check 'em out.
Do they do it by signing up to forums pretending to be a happy punter and then bigging up their own products? Pluck

Are you sure you're not just 'thinking' it's from another track? That bass sound is so distinctive that it might be triggering false memories! He's even using 'that' Yamaha in your clip. From wikipedia:
.... he contributed a distinctive bassline to Hybrid's 2003 single "True to Form"....
That probably doesn't help much, but noteably it doesn't say that he contributed a bassline {from XXXX New Order track } to Hybrid's..... Maybe it is an original line? Pluck

Just went down and had a quick look - the one in the window looks like (it was) a sunburst. It has to be said, it's not in the best condition! Pluck

I love a good restoration thread - keep it coming - with pics please Pluck

How you getting on with it now you've had it a few days Pete? Looks great in the photo's. Neil

The green/purple original paint job. In fact the whole bass. At first glance it's just hideous. But then when you actually start to look at it, it's also kind of fantastic! Good luck with the refinish - looking forward to seeing it. Pluck

If you have a maple neck, it has to be black surely? Otherwise the anodised guard looks great Pluck

Law of diminishing returns dictates that you have to spend increasingly large amounts of wad to achieve increasingly small amounts of improvement - and that there should be a 'sweet spot' price bracket that no-one need exceed ( unless of course you're a hard-nosed coke-snorting bubbly-qaffing million quid plus bonus banking city w***er. Oh sorry that was last month ) . I'd like to say that I would never spend more than £500 on a bass for instance, but I just don't believe myself! Pluck

Who's whistling me? Oh wait.. its my ears..
sgt-pluck replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I know I should wear earplugs.. and yes I know I'm damaging my hearing... but I've tried earplugs and find that I completely lose the feel of the music and have trouble playing well. Does anyone else had this problem? I've even tried wearing one ear plug on the side closest to the drummer but still I struggle.. Anyone know I can get around this??
How about trying the disposable tapering plugs ( cheap from Boots ) and not push them in so far? I use them on my 'bike and find I can change the amount of sound-damping they give me by how far in I shove 'em! FWIW - I suffer from intermittent tinnitus through biking. You don't want tinnitus Pluck -
This is a nice looking piece of kit, I am sorely tempted myself but I cant help but feel its over priced http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:AAQ:GB:1123
Well I don't know what the experts think ( and an expert I certainly aint! ), but that bass looks odd. I can't believe it's '70's - looks way too clean to me - not enough yellowing on the neck, hardware too lacking in 'patina' etc. But the body looks like it might be two ( ? ) pieces of wood although no idea what wood it might be - I'd assume it's been stained. Couldn't find anything on 'Melody' as a brand. Nothing on the smaller-than-usual neckplate. Home-made maybe? Interesting.... I agree though, might be worth a punt if it were a bit cheaper. Pluck -

Right - sorry for turning this into a total train-spotters thread - but I've conducted some research Here are my findings:

There is more than one P-Bass. 'The' P-bass is very old and battered and has cream pups, but there is another, newer sunburst P-bass with black pups.
There is a sunburst Jazz.
There is a natural/cream Jazz
I have footage of the Seeds here with Casey playing a black Jazz.
As an aside - here is a picture of Warren Ellis playing what looks like a miniture T-bird. Thank you for your time! Pluck

I'm 99.99% sure that I've seen footage of him playing a Jazz, although I've seen Nick Cave and/or Bad Seeds/Grinderman live god knows how many times and never seen him playing anything other than that P. Not that I'm an obsessive Cave fan or anything. I love the unintrusive and complementary way Casey plays. Pluck
