Solid Air I've posted this link before but I love Danny's playing on this version sooooo much that I'm going to post it again.....
That was great - thanks for posting that. Those two are tuned right into each other. Pluck
2. Funny you should talk about Danny Thompson - I've got Solid Air on the pod as I type. Fabulous bass work. Pluck
3.
Just about everything that Family played with the Wailers.
Good shout.
4. I don't really like later REM stuff, but I have to say I love the bassline on 'Ignoreland' - especially the way it compliments and drives the vocal along. To me that track is all about Stipe and Mills, with some nice drumming thrown in for good measure. What other tracks tie bass and vocal in so well? Pluck
5.
"low action * sounds & plays great !" how can he tell with no strings on it?
I've never understood why that seller never puts strings on his gear before advertising it. It's academic though - I wouldn't buy anything from him regardless. Pluck
6.
called Precision beacause it had frets
Didn't know that - thanks.
7. In essence.... Jazz = 2 pups, 'slanty' bodyshape, narrower neck, more tonal variety. Precision = Single pup, 'squarer' bodyshape, wider neck, less tonal variety, but has the thump that built rock! The majority of all basses are based on one or t'other configuration, and are usually described as being either 'j-type', 'p-type', or sometimes 'pj-type' which means it'll have one pick-up in the Precision position and a bridge pick-up a'la Jazz. Pluck *Edited for clarity!
8. Have been for ages now - just waiting for the right instrument to come up Not sure why - but I found this site whilst I was researching which one I wanted - so that's a good thing. Or bad, if you're my bank manager!
9. It's interesting hearing that track played by non-Who musicians - it really goes to show how much The Who sound really was all about Entwhistle. Although to be fair the singer sounds a lot like Roger Daltrey. Excellent clip. Pluck
10. Argh!!! I've been looking for one of those!! If I wasn't going to Norway for 3 weeks on thursday I'd have that!! Bugger! Pluck
11. More Ibanez, looks lovely. Looks HEAVY! Pluck
12.
P-like neck, but slimmer front-back - 41mm nut. The body isn't onepiece- its a laminate. Very nice, but heavy as ****!
Thanks for the info. I can see one of these in my future!
13. Anyone know what the nut width/neck profile is on these? P or J?
14.
yeah think you may be right there i found original catalogue on a website somewhere recently will post link f i can find it again
Yep I've seen a couple of catalogues on t'net somewhere - none of them show a white roadster IIRC. In fact the seller has lifted his description directly from one of the catalogues!
15. I was looking at that - I reckon it's been refinished. Nice though. Tempted Pluck
16. I know your case is different as the thing wouldn't exist if it weren't for you having built it in the first place, and you need to make your money back and all that, but I personally hate seeing basses being broken purely for profit. Specially one a nice looking as yours. Sad truth is you probably will get more for it if you split it. Pluck
17.
i cant see the pole pieces clearly enough, but dont model J's have the little dimples in the top, like allen key holes.
Yeah it's not clear in the pics - mine do, they are adjustable pole-pieces with an allen key. When I bought the bass the pole-pieces were rusted to bits, and when I discovered that the pups were old Dimarzio's - I contacted Dimarzio in America and they found and sent me some replacements totally free! Was very impressed with them.
18. I just took off an (admittedly well past there sell-by date, but I liked them) rounds to try out some flats (on a Tokai JB). First I put on a set of Rotosound 77 flats I had kicking about, but found them way too tight so took them straight back off again. Then I bought some of those TI flats people seem to rave about. I can see why now - they're brilliant! Lovely tone and dead easy to play. Also I've got equal tone and volume across all the strings which seems no mean feat on this particular bass. But the thing that has really surprised me is the amount of tonal control I've got back now. It's almost too much! I honestly thought my tone control was broken when I had my old and very dead rounds on, which didn't bother me that much as I liked the noise I was getting, albeit there was only really two useful tones. Now I can dial in all manner of sounds and the tone control now has a huge effect. I feel like I'm going to have to learn my bass again. Is this normal? Did I just have a crappy set of strings on before, or is that how dead strings behave? They were Rotosound 66 Swing. Pluck
19. I'd be tempted with either or tort, or possibly an off-white or 'aged' white scratchplate. Looking good BTW Pluck
20.
pluck, did the jazz sounds come with non-jazz ultra pups as standard?
As far as I can make out (and this isn't gospel), there were a few special editions of Tokai's with Dimarzio's fitted, and I think mine was one of them, although I don't think my pups are ultra's. Could be wrong though. I've had my bass apart when I first got it to restore it - and me and my old man reckoned the pups/wiring looked factory. I know that Tokai had a deal going on with Dimarzio during the early 80's, and I've also found a copy of Guitarist Magazine from the 80's which reviews a fretless Jazz Sound which came with Dim's (I think! Might have been EMG's) from the factory, so it wasn't unheard of for Tokai to release 'specials'. Pluck
21.
It puts the "proper bass players use their fingers" debate in some sort of context. I wonder what sort of market research Leo did for that design choice. Does anyone play bass like that?
I've seen John McVie play like that, and I saw a bassist playing along with Nina Simone on some video or other using the thumb technique. Tried it myself after seeing that video. Made a nice sound but felt weird and was very slow Pluck
22. Could be my Tokai Jazz Sound? Either way, I don't need much of an excuse to post pics of my baby up again Dimarzio pups, possibly factory-fitted, early 80's. It's a Bravewood scratchplate, unnecessarily expensive, but looks the business. Pluck
23. Great work - another one spits out the dust and battles onwards!!! I like the brownish tint to the sunburst, goes well with the maple neck. Very nice
24. I know this thread is mostly for UK Japcrap, but I thought I'd post this as it's an absolute beauty, and fairly rare too, and I'm struggling to keep my finger away from the trigger! Pluck
25.
I've now finished removing the finish from the body.... before during after I still need to sand out a few bits of black finish that were sprayed onto areas where the original clear finish had worn away I had to sand out the neck pocket slightly so the neck would fit. I'm having more thoughts about the finish to the body, I quite fancy getting a really dark grain filler (black?) and then staining the body with white woodstain to maintain the bleached out look. And then an oil finish. Any advice/warnings by anyone with more experience than me (that's everyone!) would be gratefully received
Hey hey - thats starting to look really interesting! Body looks great. Are you going to go for a Fender-style bridge for P-thud or something like a Badass? Also, where did you get the neck from, and is it P-style dimensions or thinner like a Jazz? Might be interested in doing a similar build/restoration. Pluck
