Who's whistling me? Oh wait.. its my ears..
sgt-pluck replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I know I should wear earplugs.. and yes I know I'm damaging my hearing... but I've tried earplugs and find that I completely lose the feel of the music and have trouble playing well. Does anyone else had this problem? I've even tried wearing one ear plug on the side closest to the drummer but still I struggle.. Anyone know I can get around this??
How about trying the disposable tapering plugs ( cheap from Boots ) and not push them in so far? I use them on my 'bike and find I can change the amount of sound-damping they give me by how far in I shove 'em! FWIW - I suffer from intermittent tinnitus through biking. You don't want tinnitus Pluck -
This is a nice looking piece of kit, I am sorely tempted myself but I cant help but feel its over priced http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:AAQ:GB:1123
Well I don't know what the experts think ( and an expert I certainly aint! ), but that bass looks odd. I can't believe it's '70's - looks way too clean to me - not enough yellowing on the neck, hardware too lacking in 'patina' etc. But the body looks like it might be two ( ? ) pieces of wood although no idea what wood it might be - I'd assume it's been stained. Couldn't find anything on 'Melody' as a brand. Nothing on the smaller-than-usual neckplate. Home-made maybe? Interesting.... I agree though, might be worth a punt if it were a bit cheaper. Pluck -

Right - sorry for turning this into a total train-spotters thread - but I've conducted some research Here are my findings:

There is more than one P-Bass. 'The' P-bass is very old and battered and has cream pups, but there is another, newer sunburst P-bass with black pups.
There is a sunburst Jazz.
There is a natural/cream Jazz
I have footage of the Seeds here with Casey playing a black Jazz.
As an aside - here is a picture of Warren Ellis playing what looks like a miniture T-bird. Thank you for your time! Pluck

I'm 99.99% sure that I've seen footage of him playing a Jazz, although I've seen Nick Cave and/or Bad Seeds/Grinderman live god knows how many times and never seen him playing anything other than that P. Not that I'm an obsessive Cave fan or anything. I love the unintrusive and complementary way Casey plays. Pluck
Just about everything that Family played with the Wailers.
Good shout. -
I don't really like later REM stuff, but I have to say I love the bassline on 'Ignoreland' - especially the way it compliments and drives the vocal along. To me that track is all about Stipe and Mills, with some nice drumming thrown in for good measure. What other tracks tie bass and vocal in so well? Pluck
"low action * sounds & plays great !" how can he tell with no strings on it?
I've never understood why that seller never puts strings on his gear before advertising it. It's academic though - I wouldn't buy anything from him regardless. Pluck

What is the difference between a jazz and precision bass?

What is the difference between a jazz and precision bass?
sgt-pluck replied to Kleng77's topic in Bass Guitars
In essence.... Jazz = 2 pups, 'slanty' bodyshape, narrower neck, more tonal variety. Precision = Single pup, 'squarer' bodyshape, wider neck, less tonal variety, but has the thump that built rock! The majority of all basses are based on one or t'other configuration, and are usually described as being either 'j-type', 'p-type', or sometimes 'pj-type' which means it'll have one pick-up in the Precision position and a bridge pick-up a'la Jazz. Pluck *Edited for clarity! -
Have been for ages now - just waiting for the right instrument to come up Not sure why - but I found this site whilst I was researching which one I wanted - so that's a good thing. Or bad, if you're my bank manager!

It's interesting hearing that track played by non-Who musicians - it really goes to show how much The Who sound really was all about Entwhistle. Although to be fair the singer sounds a lot like Roger Daltrey. Excellent clip. Pluck

In fact the seller has lifted his description directly from one of the catalogues! -

I was looking at that - I reckon it's been refinished. Nice though. Tempted Pluck -
I know your case is different as the thing wouldn't exist if it weren't for you having built it in the first place, and you need to make your money back and all that, but I personally hate seeing basses being broken purely for profit. Specially one a nice looking as yours. Sad truth is you probably will get more for it if you split it. Pluck

Request for a pic of a jazz bass (black + torty + cream)
i cant see the pole pieces clearly enough, but dont model J's have the little dimples in the top, like allen key holes.
Yeah it's not clear in the pics - mine do, they are adjustable pole-pieces with an allen key. When I bought the bass the pole-pieces were rusted to bits, and when I discovered that the pups were old Dimarzio's - I contacted Dimarzio in America and they found and sent me some replacements totally free! Was very impressed with them. -
I just took off an (admittedly well past there sell-by date, but I liked them) rounds to try out some flats (on a Tokai JB). First I put on a set of Rotosound 77 flats I had kicking about, but found them way too tight so took them straight back off again. Then I bought some of those TI flats people seem to rave about. I can see why now - they're brilliant! Lovely tone and dead easy to play. Also I've got equal tone and volume across all the strings which seems no mean feat on this particular bass. But the thing that has really surprised me is the amount of tonal control I've got back now. It's almost too much! I honestly thought my tone control was broken when I had my old and very dead rounds on, which didn't bother me that much as I liked the noise I was getting, albeit there was only really two useful tones. Now I can dial in all manner of sounds and the tone control now has a huge effect. I feel like I'm going to have to learn my bass again. Is this normal? Did I just have a crappy set of strings on before, or is that how dead strings behave? They were Rotosound 66 Swing. Pluck

I'd be tempted with either or tort, or possibly an off-white or 'aged' white scratchplate. Looking good BTW Pluck
