Well, lets hope the buyer doesn't get p*ssed when they work out it's not an August '80 by Fugigen but an '88 by Terada.
I agree with you that the Artstar line didn't appear until the mid or late 80s, yet I can see why the seller said 1980, as the serial number indicates that. Any suggestion why that might be the case? I know bugger all about old Japanese basses, so I'm really curious about what the story is here.
 2.
+1 Re the finish on the bass in question, I don't think anyone above has said that it is definitely a refin, and I doubt anyone could do so from photos alone (well, I certainly couldn't). I think the sentiment of the posts above is "are you sure it's original". Whilst there are characteristics of a Fender finish that are present 99% of the time, there's also considerable variation in Fender QC. Whether that variation extends to the characteristics that have been identified as unusual for an original finish on this bass I couldn't say. Either way, I don't think the OP should simply accept that it's a refin and drop the price, but should get the bass inspected in person by an expert (and not that place in Norwich that calls everything a vintage Fender ).
That's a very good point Beedster. I can certainly see why the comments above were made about the finish, but Fender basses from the 60s were far from an exact science. As Beedster has said, the OP should definitely have the bass evaluated by someone with some real expertise in valuing an old Fender. It may turn out to be a refin, or it may turn out to be a strange one that came from the factory like that.
 3.
Sounds like I got done , the finish is certainly very old , lots of weather checking etc , I was told by the seller it was original. I checked all the things like neck date , foil sheild under scratchplate , pot dates (I got the tone pot changed locally as the old one did nothing , still have it in the case) never knew about the tuners , thanks for the advice. ....anybody want to make an interesting offer then ?
One of the difficult things with dating an old Fender is that, while things like pickup dates, pot codes etc all give a good indication of age, they're also peripheral parts that can be replaced, so they don't automatically indicate the age of the bass itself, nor the actual originality of the instrument (especially when it comes to the finish). Even the neck stamp really only tells you how old the neck is, not the body itself, and the same thing applies there as well - an all original neck does not automatically indicate the same for the body. I've got a couple of old Fenders which I bought a few years back, and I have to be honest, I think I got very lucky to end up with the pieces I did. Personally, I won't comment on your bass, other than to say that the comments on the tuners are correct. If it turned out that they were the only non-original parts, then it wouldn't be such a bad thing, as a modification like changed tuners is easily reversible.
 4. Bump. If anyone has a comment on this deal, regarding price or anything, I'm open to comments. I would like to move this bass, but it appears I'm doing something wrong due to the lack of response.
 5.
Great bass but both photo links show the same body photo
Thanks for pointing that out!
 6. I have a Gibson Thunderbird Anniversary from 1976 for sale. The bass is in very good condition. I have the original case, as well as ashtrays. It doesn't have the usual neck break you see on a lot of these. The bass is located in Lisbon, Portugal. I'd like to get close to £2000 for this, and will consider sensisble offers. Shipping from Portugal is extra. I'm not really interested in any trades, mainly due to the logistical issue of having to send items in both directions, however, I'm open to offers. Body Full bass I can supply more photos on request for serious parties. For the purpose of full disclosure, the only issue is that the nut has moved a little in it's slot, and I think it would need to be reseated. It's not broken, it just seems to have slipped a little (say, 2mm or so). 7.
I've been lucky enough to get tickets for the champions league final on Saturday.
You lucky bugger!!!! I'd kill to go to the game, although I agree with what you said elsewhere, I think United will struggle with Barca's passing game. Still, they've got the experience from 2 years ago to work with, so maybe Fergie will have something up his sleeve.
 8. Daions were sold in Australia for a while in the early 80s. They were sorta popular, I think there was still this "Jap Crap" stigma attached to them, which was pretty silly, as they were amazing instruments. Like Bassassin said, they were very well made instruments, very nice to look at, and quite ahead of their time in relation to the way the felt. I can't remember the names exactly, but I can recall Power and XX being part of the model names. EDIT: Quick Google search, and I found this http://daionguitar.com/index.php
 9.
true, this man built instruments of very high quality! Plume is the model for me, one of the most beautiful design! The electronics of this instrument is perfect! Sound: http://owo10.free.fr/d-code.mp3 I have other soundclip, ask me and I would send you by mail PEACE
I just listened to your clip, that's some great playing!!! Post the other clip up, I'd love it hear it.
 10. That's a beautiful bass. It was a shame JP stopped making basses, he had some great designs.
 11.
Some amazing vintage Fenders on BC just now (and at amazing prices too!) - this one is just gorgeous!
Yeah, I have to agree on this. I would've thought a '66 Jazz in this condition would've been pulling a few quid more than is being asked, it looks to be a very good price. Has the vintage market really dropped this much?
 12.
I'm no expert (and I'm sure that somebody will come along with an 'official' answer) but I've seen a few like this where the transfer wouldn't show on a dark coloured MHS
You beat me to it! I'd only disagree in that I think it was only the black headstock instruments they did this with.
 13.
Strange that Fender only fitted part of the transfer to the headstock, is that normal for painted/matched headstocks?
I've seen this before, and I think it's to do with being a black headstock. Fender had their standard transfers which they used, and they had black text, and obviously that wouldn't show up on the black background. Knowing what Fender were like in those days, I'd assume they couldn't see the point of going to the extra expense of creating alternative transfers for a few custom colour instruments.
 14.
Maybe contradiction is the wrong term - perhaps irony would have worked... but I think we're talking in general statements.
Irony is indeed the word. Stupid is another one!!! I think there's a perception outside the UK that all UKers are rich. People simply look at the wages earned there, and assume you're all raking it in. What they don't take into account is the incredibly high cost of living in the UK, meaning that those higher wages are soon spent simply living day to day.
 15.
But isn't there a contradiction in saying that some members are bumping their prices up while meanwhile one is complaining that nothing sells around here ?
Contradiction as in you don't believe me, or contradiction in that it doesn't make sense to do it? If you don't believe me, I can point to the specific items, although I won't do it publicly. I'll also provide links to the reduced priced items on the other site. If the contradiction is about why a person would do it - who knows!!!!! Maybe they think that they can't get top price in their own country, but the UK buyers have more money (perception, not necessarily the truth), so they'll chance a higher price with them.
 16.
So a suggestion to the mods might well be that as a matter of policy that an item can't be advertised somewhere else for less money? Cheers Mark

Just email the seller and do what I do: Go against all my inner rage and be as nice, pleasant and as informational as possible. Once inner calm reached - job done! Trust me you feel better for it but do agree it is annoying. Sometimes I feel these people attempt to take the 'P' out of the members but what some sellers don't seem to get, is that the forum members are actually very intelligent, diligent and informed in all things bass.
I do think the people on the forum are quite well informed, and I also think there's a great sense of community on this forum. But like any forum, there's people who turn up with one intention only, to advertise for free. The admin of this forum are very accomodating about this issue, and I personally think it's to the detriment of the forum. The way sellers get around this issue is that the item(s) are usually being sold on a local site in a different language. I'm sure everyone on here checks Gumtree, Ebay UK etc, but for example, I live in Portugal - does anyone on here ever look at www.olx.pt ? Or www.forumusica.com ? Of course not, it wouldn't make sense to. And that's what the sellers I'm talking about rely on - they know that as English speakers and UK residents, it's very unlikely that you'll be checking a Portuguese website or a French website or a Polish website. Like I said, I can't be bothered getting into an argument with people about this, but it does annoy the cr*p out of me as it seems to go against the spirit of the forum. Seriously, they're being given the opportunity to advertise for free to a large group of people who are the exact target group they need, so the obvious thing for them to do is to bump the price up!!!!
 17.
I've only ever bought off here and have had nothing but good experiences. I like to think I might have got the odd bargain too What spoils it for me is the odd seller ( usually the same ones ) who advertise a guitar at what initially looks like a grossly inflated price - only to reduce it a week later by £150.00 because they're now 'desperate' to sell!! There's nothing wrong with trying it on, and anyone with experience will leave well alone - but the young or inexperienced are likely to be ripped off on what is at face value a really good website with largely top people posting on it. C
I'll take that one step further. When a seller is selling something on this site at a certain price, but has it advertised elsewhere cheaper (sometimes considerably so). This happens more with non-UK based sellers, as they advertise it locally for a certain price, then decide to go to a UK site and for some reason think it's OK to bump up the price. There's actually an example of this happening right now, and I've seen it a number of times in the past. I'm always tempted to comment on the thread, but then, there's this rule in the For Sale not to do that., and to be honest, I don't feel like getting into an argument with all the do-gooders defending the seller saying "oh, he has the right to sell at whatever price he likes".
 18.
Are guitars allowed to be on sale here? I have two Steinberger's I'm planning on moving.
Yes, here. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=21 What are they?
 19.
I hope this is allowed in the rules, but I will also entertain offers under 800 pounds. But please, no 500£ offers. Why else would they cost 2000€ new?
If you want to include some flexibility in the pricing, the usual way is to say "£800 ono". The "ono" is "or near offer".
 20. I had a look at his other auctions, and it says "esta numa loja em lisboa onde se pode experimentar", which translates that it's in a shop in Lisboa where you can try it out. I think I know who this seller is, and if I'm correct, he's a crook and a half. I've caught him out on stuff a few times, and I used know a repairman who he'd pay to put Fender decals onto cheap Chinese guitars. I had a very funny experience with him one time. I'd bought a Musicmaster bass from the UK, then ended up passing it onto a friend. It was from 1972, something like that, as confirmed by the serial number on the neckplate, and had been routed for a P pickup under the scratchplate, so it was easily identifiable. Anyway, moving on, the bass ends up in his store, only now, it's a 1960 L Series Musicmaster Bass (yep, that's right !!!). It's got the L Series neckplate and serial number, so it must be so. Only problem is that he hasn't done his homework, and while Musicmaster guitars existed in 1960, the basses didn't appear until 1970 (or thereabouts). His answer - it's a prototype, and therefore worth much more money!!!!! At this point I had to put him out of his misery and tell him that I used to own the bass, and that it was a 1970(ish) bass when I owned it, and that someone had simply swapped the neckplate. He says "impossible, I bought it from a trusted friend". So I say "take the scratchplate off - I bet it's routed for a P pickup". Sure enough, there it is. He goes all embarrassed, and delivers his greatest line ever. "You can't trust anyone these days"!!!!!! I swear, I nearly pissed myself when he said that.
 21. Every time I see this bass I think what a great design it is. I don't know why, but when it comes to fretless basses, I really like something a bit more exotic. Good luck with the sale.
 22. When I see mods to old Fenders, I always try to take into account the fact that it's only been the last few years that they've become these collectible pieces, and that the owners back then just did what they thought would make the bass more usable for them. But this one really makes me cringe. I can see what he was going for, and he's achieved that, but it's just such a radical measure to have taken on an otherwise beautiful bass.
