1. We do quite a few freebies for charity but only where there is a direct connection with the charity. So no working for 'organisers' or any other middle people. Selling tickets? C'mon!
2. Love is in the Air
3. I am selling my EA 12" Wizzy Cab. Great for DB and BG. It's the 4ohm model, has a Piano Covers cover and is immaculate. Price £300 http://www.eaamps.com/products-detail.asp?REC_ID=5
4.
This. Every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FppYjt6wZJI
Oh yes! My favourite too.
5. I use a coach screw with a nut screwed right up to the head to provide a bit of stand off.
6. I'm a double bass player.
7. I use various amps and a mains preamp. I wish the power socket on the back was the same orientation. When I lean over to plug in I can never remember whether the kettle lead goes in right way up/upside down/looking left/looking right. 'Cos the socket is most often invisible and I plug in by feel.
8.
I've been known to listen to it in the shower.
Pics or it didn't happen.
9. I have a Crazy 8 cab for sale. It's a small, very light, cab with an 8" driver. This one was made by Mike Arnopol in USA and is of composite construction, hence its lightness. I have used this with a double bass in a large hall, approx 150 in the audience, with a nine-piece band. It is immaculate. Dims are: 280Wx360Hx300D and weighs 13lbs. If you need a photo please send me a PM with an email address and I'll send you one.
10. Yes, it's important to find a system that you're happy with and with the minimum of hassle so you can just get on with your playing and enjoying the gig. That means a Lifeline on one of the basses and a Full Circle on the other one. Oh, and a mag on the Kolstein EUB. When I'm going to a gig where I know there will be front of house PA I take an ATM 350 mic but really I haven't a clue how it sounds because I'm on the stage not down in the audience. But they seem to like it. As I've said before, don't be too hung up on getting the 'right' sound back home in your room because once you get playing with all the other instruments you will lose all those nuances, good and bad.
11. Oh good.
12.
I NEVER saw the late John Entwistle use one. What are you on about?
Pete Townshend. I couldn't remember how to spell his name hence the 'lead guitar geezer'. He was using a pad quite conspicuously.
13. Last time I saw The Who that lead guitar geezer had one.
14. Mariah would be worth a laugh.
15. Great, Bilbo. I remember when he did a lot of live TV. And before that he was pianist in the Johnny Dankworth Band. By far the standout jazz big band of its time.
16. Nice one, Pete. I had a little Standard 10 with a roof rack. One evening after a gig I took my girlfriend home. I can't remember why but perhaps I wanted a more comfortable car to 'say goodnight' to the girlfriend so on the way to her house I stopped off at home and swapped my car for my dad's zephyr. On the way back home after dropping off the girlfriend I was hit head on by a pissed army officer. I was hospitalised for a couple of weeks and all my mates wanted to know was if my bass was ok. Which, of course, it was.
17. I've got an expensive year coming up so I'd like to avoid GAS2017. I'll take my OneTen to the gig tomorrow and hope that it will do all I need. Otherwise a new BF Super Midget is in prospect. On the bright side it'll help in reducing an embarrassing profit in my year's accounts.
18. It happens to us all from time to time. I've been using my Kolstein Travel Bass for the past couple of months which is easy on the fingers. But I've got a heavy duty jazz gig in Oxford on Tuesday on double bass. I've been soaking my fingers in surgical spirit for the past week in the hope that they will harden. Time will tell. I've been through the blisters phase before; fingers recover.
19. In my early days the bass went on the roof because cars were really small back then. I wish I had some pics.
20. Have a good one, all you fellow Basschatters. Peace on earth.
21. On most gigs I do I'd get the call 'A minor/C major. The second bit is really superfluous bit it all helps with the orientation.
22. Thanks for that, very interesting. It's worth noting that up until about 1910 American Musicals were all founded on waltzes, two beats and polkas. Then Jerome Kern started writing songs for musicals in 4/4 time. Thus the modern American musical was born and jazz musicians hung their hats on the Great American Songbook ever since, playing mostly in 4/4.
23. That's very interesting. Can you enlighten me, do you know how far back this was the case?
24. 4/4 of course. Plus whatever else comes along. To say you have a favourite, or prefer anything, above 4/4 is just plain pretentious.
25. Those library steps! Score as many points as hatpeg tuners.
