1. Forgot to add - been with them for a number of years now, must be at least 5
 2. Hi Mike Yes I have EA rig (iAmp 200 combo, if that constitutes a 'rig')... I don't know how long ago it was you saw the band but we're sounding really good these days, a marked improvement over the last couple of years, might be worth coming for another listen if you're free tomorrow... John
 3. no worries - I've been playing ages (over 15 years) and still not very good at playing by ear. Most of my gigs are reading (big band, show work etc) so I guess I just don't do enough practice 'without' the music to make a marked improvement... just remember to enjoy it... BTW, SRV is awesome, guitarist mate of mine can't get enough of him
 4. I'm very much a reading player - although I'm always trying to improve my aural skills, so if you need to reference the tab in order to progress I don't see a problem with doing this... it's not cheating, it's using you initiative The more you listen and play the better your ear will get, but don't go beating yourself up about it in the mean time - playing should be enjoyable and getting stuck on one part of a song for hours is not my idea of enjoyment

 7. Playing tomorrow (17th) at the Beaufort Hotel (A59, near Ormskirk) - the latest date in our residency there... Special Father's Day gig, should be a good one, 'Birdland' is in the programme so another work out for your's truly not mention the usual drive and energy required to get these guys swinging! If any of you guys are in the area, come and say hello, it'd be great to meet you John
 8. +1 on the Overwater strap - plus the strap locks (essential IMHO). Very comfy and distributes the weight well (I have a dodgy shoulder and back, probably partly from playing bass combined with a sports injury, so anything that helps spread the stress is a good thing A dodgy strap casued some damage to my first bass (Yamaha RBF800A) still makes me sad thinking about it - the floor was very hard, enough said...
 9. +1 on the Alesis I do a fair bit of 'home studio' recording and recently upgraded my kit from a hi-fi package to something a bit more suitable. I was using some Denon speakers with a Sony amp, which I though sounded pretty good... until I went for the passive M1's matched to an Alesis RA300 - and for the total package cost of £235 you'll struggle to do much better IMHO... There is a marked difference in the clarity and balance of the sound, glad I made the change but only wish I'd done it sooner, need to go back and remix quite a few tracks now, although I'm looking forward to it with my new setup

 17.
I have used various makes but was impressed with Overwater Nickels - must buy some more soon.
+1 on the Overwater Nickels - I find the nickel gives a warmer sound than the stainless steel and is a bit easier on the fingers too... has anyone tried the Ritter Swordsteel? ordered a set just to give them a try, not had chance to fit them yet, maybe tomorrow...

 23.
Hi to everyone i am new here and the first thing is that i am sorry for my bad english i am italian....then may I know what kind of bass strings i should buy to have a really deeper, deeper sound good to play Jazz??? I don't like bright sound at all, i love the double bass sound or fetless bass sound so I am looking for some strings that finally make me happy and i wish have some advice from somebody here!! MY BASSES http://www.schizzechea.it/MM/COPPIA_A.jpg The strings that i have right now are: Fender Marcus Miller: D'Addario Pro Steel Gauges : (.050, .065, .085, .105) Squier Jazz Bass Vintage Modified : Fender Super 7250M, Gauges: (.045, .065, .085, .105) Thank you so much!
Hi and welcome... Obvious choice would be a set of flatwounds - as for the manufacturer, that's your choice, most of the main producers have flatwounds available...
 24.
I used to have a Sansamp PSA-1 and that was both warm and sterile at the same time, very odd! Then I switched to an Ampeg SVP-Pro and was a lot happier with my overall tone. Tube preamps vary quite a lot in range, my Ampeg only cost me £250 off Ebay but you can buy stuff like Demeter or Aguilar that is pretty boutique so shop around. You really do have a lot of options here! I'd look into either of the two BBE preamps, the Sansamp RBI, Ampeg SVP-Pro and SVP-CL and the EBS Classic 1.
Just to throw something else into the mix - I was chatting to Laurence at Overwater yesterday and he suggested I should try the Avalon U5 - any of you guys ever used one?
 25.
I have always been curious about Overwater stuff. A mate of mine was offered an endorsement with them a while back and I have always liked the look of the Progress. Just never had chance to play one!
Where abouts are you? If you can get up to Carlisle then the guys are more than willing to let you try some stuff out, really helpful too...
