1. I'm not really into slap playing either, probably because I could never do it plus it is never required for the sort of music I play... Not sure of any pure finger players of the top of my head, but I'm sure you'll find that the great players (like Victor), can use all the techniques, if you want groove Victor is a great place to look - check out his clinics on bassplayer.tv
2. Depends on the shop - I went into the local Rimmers Music at lunchtime to try and get a box for shipping a bass in and they said no - in fact the manager has a policy of not giving away the boxes at all as they consider ebay a direct competitor, personally i can't see how me selling 1 guitar is going to have any great impact on them but there you go. Guess I'll have to get some cardboard from elsewhere good luck, if you find a source let me know
3.
YGWYPF
I fully agree - if I'm honest I think I'll just have to shelve the GAS for now and save up some proper money
4. Yeah - I was looking at that bass last night, I've got a squire fretless 4 on eBay at the moment, once that's sold and there's only a couple of days to go, I can think about getting something else
5. Hi I had the fretless version of the Yamaha - the TRB5F - it was my main bass for a number of years (certain amount of sentimental value to as it was my 21st birthday present from my Dad) Until I moved up to my Overwater I was well built as with all Yamaha products - it maybe doesn't have the appeal of some of the other bass brands but it was a solid performer and I've still got it as a back up. Yes, It's mass produced but to a very high standard, maybe lacks some of the refinement of other basses in it's price range but very reliable and versatile... John
6. Hi guys - I'm thinking about a fretted 5 at the moment and I've seen this on eBay link does anybody know anything about these? Looks pretty decent and is nice and cheap, but does that mean it's going to be crap Thanks in advance... John
7. Hi Mike Bass solo has a real cool vibe to it, but you need to get a better drummer John
8. Just come across another one on ebay... link

12. BigRedX - if you want info on your Overwater get in touch with Chris up in Carlisle - contact details on their website He should be able to tell you a bit about it as he probably built it... Cheers John
13. Hi Pete You're been PM'd John
14. I've been thinking about one too... I gave Overwater a call about it a few weeks ago and they had pre-sold the majority of the first shipment they were expecting. I'm not sure whether to go down this route or the pre/power amp + cab, food for though at the moment. I've currently got a iAmp 200 combo, so with regards the tone shaping options on the other iAmp gear, i've found it can be very useful, particularly in some of the pretty crap acoustics we end up playing in, gives you really good control, but I guess at the end of the day it just depends what you put into it - tone is one of those very subjective areas. I'd like to give the new iAmp micro a try just to compare
15. I use an EA iAmp 200 combo at the moment - very light only 37lb's and sounds great, loads of punch and crystal clear - to buy it new would be very expensive, however I'm considering changing my rig to a valve pre amp and power set up, trouble is I have to sell my combo first... Check this out... iAmp 200 combo details I'm looking or about £500ono PM If you're interested. Cheers John

Loopy

Just bought a Jamman - it's brilliant - no experience of the others so cannot compare... No delay as far as I can tell - it's probably down to pressing the switch at the right time - I think the auto start function is fantastic...
17. Bloody 'ell - 10 Strings - I have enough problems with the 5 i"ve got
18. Hi Matt We sometimes need a trombone deps at the bigband, and it's always good to have a bass dep to call on - let me know if you're interested and next time we're short and I'll give you a call. Where abouts do you live? we rehearse in Ormskirk, but play our regular gigs at the Beaufort Hotel on the A59 and in Southport at the Royal Clifton... check out the band website for a few more details, also have a look at this if you get chance...recording post PM me if you fancy it... Cheers John
19. Victor may not be trapped - but listen to him talk about music and he'll tell you it's all about the groove - yes he can do all the other stuff and much better than most, but he's about fundamentals first and foremost and at these he is awesome
20. Sound advice bassbluestew - I'm not one to rush into a change as fundamental as this, so rest assured I'll be doing my homework... At the end of the day I guess it's what sounds to me - and this may well be different to next bassist, and the next, and the next
21. Looks great - the next bass I get is going to have a maple fingerboard - they're stunning... May I enquire as to how much you had to part with to get that? I'm looking at getting a fretted 5 at the moment so considering all the options... Cheers John
22. Defo - go for it, there's nothing quite as satifying as driving a big band... hard My main gig is with a big band and we get the chance to play some great new charts as well as all the standards - it will improve your playing and expose you to some new music, which is always a good thing. As Viajero said there's is a certain satisfaction in sight reading a new chart and getting pretty damn close to it - I've done a few deps with a local band who play some really tricky stuff but always enjoy the challenge. All in all I would certainly recommend having a go...
23. Why are all the good gigs down south? That said I was lucky enough to see John Patitucci at Zeffirelli's, he was awesome
24. Hi guys - I've gone for 'other' because my EA iAmp200 is based on a digital architecture...
25. Hi guys - think I'll throw my two penneth in, for what it's worth... I play with in big band and part of the reason I went fretless was to try and get closer to the upright sound, you cannot sound like a double bass even on a high-end fretless, although you can get close by playing over the fingerboard and in a less aggressive finger style - but I guess we're missing the point here... If you have the right feel feel for chart and pick the right notes I guess it doesn't really matter what instrument you play - to quote Victor Wooten -"Bass is not an instrument, it's a role" I'm sure that some of the charts in the pad would sound fantastic if I owned and could play a double bass, but the more modern arrangements are more suited to bass guitar, so I guess you work with the tools you've got and just give it your best John
