1. I use an EA iAmp 200 combo at the moment - very light only 37lb's and sounds great, loads of punch and crystal clear - to buy it new would be very expensive, however I'm considering changing my rig to a valve pre amp and power set up, trouble is I have to sell my combo first... Check this out... iAmp 200 combo details I'm looking or about £500ono PM If you're interested. Cheers John

Just bought a Jamman - it's brilliant - no experience of the others so cannot compare... No delay as far as I can tell - it's probably down to pressing the switch at the right time - I think the auto start function is fantastic...
3. Bloody 'ell - 10 Strings - I have enough problems with the 5 i"ve got
4. Hi Matt We sometimes need a trombone deps at the bigband, and it's always good to have a bass dep to call on - let me know if you're interested and next time we're short and I'll give you a call. Where abouts do you live? we rehearse in Ormskirk, but play our regular gigs at the Beaufort Hotel on the A59 and in Southport at the Royal Clifton... check out the band website for a few more details, also have a look at this if you get chance...recording post PM me if you fancy it... Cheers John
5. Victor may not be trapped - but listen to him talk about music and he'll tell you it's all about the groove - yes he can do all the other stuff and much better than most, but he's about fundamentals first and foremost and at these he is awesome
6. Sound advice bassbluestew - I'm not one to rush into a change as fundamental as this, so rest assured I'll be doing my homework... At the end of the day I guess it's what sounds to me - and this may well be different to next bassist, and the next, and the next
7. Looks great - the next bass I get is going to have a maple fingerboard - they're stunning... May I enquire as to how much you had to part with to get that? I'm looking at getting a fretted 5 at the moment so considering all the options... Cheers John
8. Defo - go for it, there's nothing quite as satifying as driving a big band... hard My main gig is with a big band and we get the chance to play some great new charts as well as all the standards - it will improve your playing and expose you to some new music, which is always a good thing. As Viajero said there's is a certain satisfaction in sight reading a new chart and getting pretty damn close to it - I've done a few deps with a local band who play some really tricky stuff but always enjoy the challenge. All in all I would certainly recommend having a go...
9. Why are all the good gigs down south? That said I was lucky enough to see John Patitucci at Zeffirelli's, he was awesome
10. Hi guys - I've gone for 'other' because my EA iAmp200 is based on a digital architecture...
11. Hi guys - think I'll throw my two penneth in, for what it's worth... I play with in big band and part of the reason I went fretless was to try and get closer to the upright sound, you cannot sound like a double bass even on a high-end fretless, although you can get close by playing over the fingerboard and in a less aggressive finger style - but I guess we're missing the point here... If you have the right feel feel for chart and pick the right notes I guess it doesn't really matter what instrument you play - to quote Victor Wooten -"Bass is not an instrument, it's a role" I'm sure that some of the charts in the pad would sound fantastic if I owned and could play a double bass, but the more modern arrangements are more suited to bass guitar, so I guess you work with the tools you've got and just give it your best John
12. Hi Matt Great to see another Overwater player on here - and one who also play bass trombone - that make two of us ... My main bass in a Overwater Progress III custom fretless 5, also have a Bach Stradivarius Bass Trombone, although it doesn't get much of a look in these days, most of my playing is on bass guitar, but still do the odd show on trombone (maybe once/twice a year if I'm lucky, just about keep my hand in). I currently contemplating another bass - fretted 5 this time, not sure I can run to another Overwater, but you never know Glad you made it, and play the Goodwin charts too... Cheers John
13. I own the gear and do the sound for the big band I play in - not really for volume more to give a bit of lift in some really dead venues, which usually means just adding a bit of reverb to the brass and saxes - amazing what a difference it can make - we usually di the guitar, bass and piano too just to keep them in the mix, the drums are always loud enough!! Also have a singer and they need to be loud enough to carry over the rest of us, which can be a challenge sometimes.. Bought a small desk of eBay and run it in conjunction with my Yamah mixer amp, through 2 main speakers and a couple of non-powered monitors, it's a pretty simple set up but I find it's hard to adjust when you're in the mix. We usually have a good half hour sound check to make sure everything is right, the MD knows what he wants and he's never been dissapointed (as far as I kown ) - we tried a couple of other PAs that guys in the band have but seemed that mine gave us the best sound - and I was mug enough to take on the responsibility of carting it about and setting it up, I don't mind because the end result is a better sounding gig so it's worth it. Just need to buy a bigger car now

Being able to play drums to like that must really help with your feel - guess if you can groove on the bass, you can groove on the kit - the rest is just technique

Way cool... nice one
17. Hi Garry Cool - unusual line-up but sounds great - I'm assuming you programmed the drums too... I'm into recording stuff too, I've done a few bits and pieces with Paul, a mate of mine who plays guitar and sings, we were in a band together some years ago now but the other guys moved away - some of the stuff we've worked on is online here... Paul's myspace and here... Paul's website I'm playing bass, keyboards and programmed the drums on most of the tracks and most recorded in my 'studio' (back bedroom really) on a Zoom hard disk recorder, great piece of kit and loads of fun to be had with it... More recently started actually playing drums, not quite there yet but keep trying, found my bass playing has improved as a result of trying to play the kit, which can only be a good thing
18.
So what is an altime favorite. Great tone, great feel. Awesome G
Hey Garry Many thanks for taking the time to have a listen and for your kind words Cheers John
19. Overwater Nickel Roundwound Medium Gauge, seem to work just fine for me... however maybe it's time I tried some of these DR's, they seem to be very popular
20. Will do - we've got a Rimmers Music in town, but I might have more joy if I take a trip to Manchester or Liverpool, a few more option there
21. Hi Olie If it's a lined fretless you're after, I've got a Squire Fretless 4 on eBay at the moment, only got about 30 hours to run... reserve £170 - this includes a full on ritter gig bag and the bass comes with a padded air stap (for comfort) and strap locks, not to mention it's in great condition and looking for a good home... eBay listing Where abouts are you? It says collection only, but I'll ship at cost but canot except liability as only in a soft case, will pack well. Drop me a PM if you're interested
22. Bass Player TV is a cool resource... watch the Victor Wooten clinics, they are superb
23. Cheers Spikyhedgehog - thanks for your input, i'll check it out... I've had a look at a QSC earlier today, only online but it looked pretty good - guess I need to find a local shop where I can try these things out... Cheers John
