1.
oooh... thats nice. am i the only one thinking that'd look even better with a black pickguard?
no, I think it would look even better with one too... don't know what it is but it just doesn't seem right, something to do with the control plate shape, just makes it look unfinished with the guard, I appreciate why it's not there, in which case why not rear rout it? it's all down to personal taste though and if it works for you then fair play
2.
Looks better each day!! This is one of the best Posts on BC I've come across. I've been tuning every evening and looking forward to the next one each night. God knows what I'm going to do after tomorrow night. My wife says I'm sad How about we have a whip round and send you back to build another one during your next holiday!!
^^Glad it's not just me then - thinking about it, it's kind of like a soap opera... only much better That neck is looking great, and I'm sure you're hard graft tomorrow will all be worth it, looking forward to seeing the end result, great job
3. Always best to find out what key the rest rest of the band want to play the song in first.. i've been through this a few times too, you go away and put in the hours to learn the part and the next minute you find you have to transpose on the fly to make the guitarist/vocalist (*delete as appropriate) sound good Sorry not familar with this particular track so not much help sorry...
4. Nice one Mike - that's what office walls are for
5. 2 regular bands - 4 or more irregular bands My main band is the big band - reading gig, rehearse pretty much every Sunday, unless we're gigging, we used to play one regular gig a month plus any other bookings, approximately once a month. Playing with Liane Carroll later in the Year and also appearing at the Wigan Jazz Festival - full dates list here The blues rock trio - no dots for this one and still at rehearsal stage with this but me and the guitarist go way back - try and get together at least every other week (Saturday, it's big band on Sunday) sometimes every weekend - when we're ready we'll do a 'few' gigs as and when we can. Done a fair bit of recording for this project along the way too Show band - 3 or 4 shows a year - reading gigs usually takes a week out of my life but there you go, playing every night is great - plus band calls and dress rehearsals etc Deps - with other local bands - usually reading gigs, if I'm free I'll do it, as previous mentioned, probably happiest when I'm playing Smaller trio/quartet/quintet, jazz/function/wedding/charity type gigs - as and when they happen, not too often but always an enjoyable experience - again if I can I will.. Plus a full time job (lots of hours here), no kids just yet but have a feeling that won't be far off, not sure what's going to happen then... Play as much as you can manage, but don't overdo it
6. Hey this is going well, you're making it look easy - have you done this before I'd imagine the neck is the trickiest bit, guess you just have to keep checking, be confident with what you're doing and keep checking... Just 2 more days to go, bring it on home...
7. My main bass is a fretless 5 - so what does that make me? That said my main gig is with a bigband so it's entirely appropriate - also use it for small jazz gigs and most of the show work I do... I tend to use my pbass for the blues rock trio because it is more the sound that is required, i have used the fretless in the past but it overall just doesn't seem to work as well (even thought there are a few original songs we do where it is perfect). The rest of the band took instantly to the p first time I used it so it tends to get that gig now. I'd be quite happy to use either bass in any of the given senarios it's just that one is more suited to a given situation than the other... The fretless does sound very cool and it's worth having one just for that unmistakable mwah, go on you know you want to
8. You don't see many for sale in the second hand market and they are hard enough to get hold of new (and as you say expensive), looking forward to the review and the photos - hope it lives up to expectations, I've read many a good thing about them...
9. I've had my eye on one of these for quite a while - almost picked one up back end of last year, but just missed out Just a quick couple of questions... Where did you find it in the end? Will there be a full review soon? Cheers John
10. Hi Bren and welcome onboard... Cheers, I'll have a guinness
11. Hi Zak - welcome aboard
12. Coming along nicely - really liking the body shape you've got going on there and of course the natural with the black pickguard is a classic combination, great stuff... Can you stay at the workshop to do your homework or do you have to get everything done in a set time during the day?, I know what I'm like and if possible i'd be putting in as many extra hours as I could to try and make as good a job of it as I could. That said I guess Jon has it all worked out and if you follow his instruction there won't be any issues and he probably quite likes going home too Looking forward to tomorrow's installment, great thread you've got going here and thanks for info on the finish
13. Seems like good progress for day 1, you must be pleased with your efforts What sort of finish are you planing on having, is a proper paint job out if the question in the timescale?
14. Nice one Scoop I had a brief (and unplugged) play on Peter's ACG at the bash and it felt very comfortable to wear, not to mention looking great - if I was in the market for another bass I would be considering asking Alan to make me something. Hope it all works out as planned, look forward to seeing in the flesh too...
15. Cool - be really interested in your experience and looking forward to seeing your creation... I spoke with Jon at Bass Day last year with a veiw to doing eaxctly this - I've been so busy lately that I not even had chance to get a spec over to Jon for his feedback but it is something I'd really like to do... Have a great time
16. No (*touch wood) - no issues at all I've also got one [RA300] in my home studio rack too and never had any issues that one either so I'd say from a reliability point of view buy with confidence. The RA500 was an extra 1u in height of if I recall and heavier too, but if you need the extra power go for it
17. Hi there - the Alesis is mine... it's a studio power amp really but for the work I do I don't need loads of power. The reason I went for it was that it doesn't have any fans, so is silent running (some of the smaller gigs I do can be quite intimate affairs). Puts out 300W at 8ohms in bridged mode which is a perfect match for my Epi UL112. It's not the lightest power amp in the world but not bad (more details here) so all in all it's quite a lighweight rig. As to wether it will suit your needs it depends on the power you requirements, I'd say it's pretty transparent so would probably work well with your POD and they are pretty cheap too, think I payed about £120 delivered for mine...
18. Great to hear that so many of you enjoyed the day, I'm just sorry I didn't have enough time to have a proper chat with everyone (that'll teach me being at a rehearsal and getting there late) I'm sure there will be another one organised before too long
19. Hey guys Thanks to you all for turning out - won't have been much of a bash without you Seemed that a good time was had by all and as previously mentioned good to put some names to faces and great to meet some like minded bass folk . Thanks to Chris and Chris (Ped) for the venue and to you all for contributing towards it... Cheers John
20. Hi all - tomorrow's the day, just a quick note to say looking forward to it - see you down there
21.
Is this all still the same.....? See you all down there Sunday 1pm ish.....! Dave Perry
Yeah details as is - Ped will be there earlier so if you want to get down a bit early then I don't see that being a problem, I'll get there as soon as I can after my rehersal (assuming I can play again by Sunday!) See you there...
22. I think it looks pretty good - the detail in binding on the neck is a little OTT but overall not bad, I wonder how it plays
23. Hi Stew and welcome, it's scary when you actually stop to think how long you've been playing, I'm 32 later this year and started playing bass in my last year in high school, so a similar length of time to your good self, where does the time go... you ever though of playing in goal?
24. The boys done good No looking back now...
25. Talking of left handed - I managed to bugger up my left wrist on Tuesday night by falling awkwardly on it during a game of badminton I went to A&E Wednesday morning for an x-ray, luckily no fracture just some tendon damage... still sore but I've got exercises to try and get it in some sort of shape for the weekend (rehearsals and of course the bash). All being well I'll be able to play a bit by weekend but even if I can't I'll still pop down to put some names to face - see you all there...
