1. Welcome - good to have you onboard - enjoy
2. Cheers Stu Sorry you didn't have the funds to take this of my hands, I know things are tough at the moment - all being well it's sold [but I won't know for sure until the weekend] but if for any reason it doesn't happen I'll let you know...
3. Euphonic Audio iAmp200 Combo - in very good condition, owned since new, now surplus to requirements. I really need £400 cash for this but would consider a trade for a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. Collection preferred but will ship at cost if required. Edit for pictures: One slight nick in input gain knob but otherwise looking and sounding great... Thanks for looking...
4. Cool, thanks - might be an idea to put our drummer in a booth all the same
5. This is superb - fascinating stuff Looking forward to seeing it develop - can you get an 18 piece big band in the live room?
6. Mate you are not having much by way of luck at the moment - hope the damage is not too bad and that it isn't going to set you back too much to repair it... BTW I've put a couple of feelers out for you with regards the sale (to a couple of guys I know who don't come on here) but no takers as yet...
7. If this had a maple board I'd be PMing you now - good luck with the sale...
8. nice one - you've got to love it when that happens
9. Happy Birthday mate - tempting though the offer is I really don't need any additional years right now All the best John
10. I'm with the rest of guys on this. So sorry to hear things aren't good for you at the moment, it's coming to something when you feel you've got no other choice than to let your pride and joy go. Keep positive - things will get better... PM'd
11. Great player - saw him live at the Southport Jazz frestival a few yeras back - brilliant live and a great band too. Not sure what bass he's using though... plays upright too - superb
12. Get yourself an Overwater - you will not be disappointed. As I already have a 5 String Fretless Progress III and a 5 String fretted Evolution on the way, I'd be looking at an ACG, Shuker or RIM just to see how they compare - probably can't go to far wrong with any of them. If you fancy something a bit different you might want to look at a Gus -Gus Website saw these the other day and thought umm, could be interesting. Whatever you fancy - enjoy the experience and happy birthday - a bit early I know
13. I've got an MRS-1266 (earlier version of what you're looking at - 12 tracks not 16) - had it a few years now and it's been great. Managed to get some good results, it has good on-board effects and is pretty intuitive. The learning curve is not too steep and once you master the basics it's easy. Recording is pretty straight forward and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to get to grips with the editing and mixing side of things either. I would imagine that the newer version has some better components (bigger HD, better connectivity etc) so if the price is within your budget it provides a good alternative to the Computer based approach IMO. If you've got further specific questions drop me a PM...
14. indeed - my bass has an aformentioned 'fat string', is that a technical term?
15. here's an alternative not already mentioned - Robben Ford...
16. As per machineheads suggestion I have an EA iAmp200 combo which uses the same technique a handle on the bottom, which works really well As it happens the combo may be surplus to requirements in the next week or so - christmas presents pending If you want any more info on it drop me a PM... Cheers John
17. I play an Overwater Progress III Fretless 5 - sounds amazing - like a fretless should The tone controls and pickup sweep give you the ability to dial in pretty much any sound you'll be needing - as you previously mention the build quaility and attention to detail are second to none. I tend to use the bridge pick up more. The sound of the bass comes primarily from the combination of woods used and the way you play it - the preamp and eq just give you some additional control. If it sounds good acoustically then it'll sound good plugged in providing you're not doing anything crazy with your amp settings. Recently played one of the newer Perception Series - these are great basses too
18. Revise an old ad with this new info: ----------------------------------------------------------------- [b]bassist wanted - my band needs you... 19.
I used to think I'd do pretty much anything for an Overwater, but the reviews I've found have never been too hot. Has anyone here got one/owned one?
I've got an Overwater - 5 String Fretless Progress III - it's awesome. Had it for about 5 years now and it's my No1 bass, I've also own/have owned really good Yamaha, Fender and Warwick basse but the Overwater is truely in a different league to all of them. I've often wondered about trying another UK customer builder but things have just never worked out... As it happens I was up in Carlisle last week and had a play on some of the new Perception Series - these are great basses - slightly smaller than the Progress and with a shallower neck profile - superbly playable and all being well I'll be getting a 5 string fretted one soon to compliment my fretless... Chris has been building basses for over 30 years and really knows his stuff and he's a great guy too. 'Bleedproof' has a 5 String Overwater Jazz so would be a good port of call for a take on their more traditional (fender) approach. I would have no reservations in recommeding Overwater to anyone, ulitimatley though you pays your money and takes your choice...
20.
Glad you got that sorted, it is indeed a great show to play. How are you getting on with "Michael Jordan's Ball" ? :-) Jennifer
Cheers - me too... It's a good number and I get round it pretty well I think - I enjoy playing Big Black Man more, it's pretty funky and Let It Go has a great solid groove to it too
Glad you got it sorted.
Thanks again - show went well again tonight and the band sounded great - let's hope it's stays like that until the end of the run...
21. Hi guys - thanks again for the suggestions and advice... Update: The Show on Saturday night was awesome, completely different to Friday... the sound was incredible and the band sounded fantastic - bass and all... I used my Overwater and the rest of the band said it sounded better than the P even though it was fretless... the issue was the hearing aid loop but a slight reposition of my amp, combined with a different bass and a much better sound guy (this one knew what he was doing). seemed to sort it all out. I've heard that the other sound guy has hearing problems!! my guess is that as a result he changes all the eqs to boost the bass and trebles because he can't hear the extremes of the frequency range meaning the bottom end becomes all muddy and illdefined and the top is way too bight and prone to feedback. After Saturday there is now no excuse for the rest of the run. It was so nice to enjoy the playing and not worry about the issues we'd had on the Friday, fingers crossed for the rest of the run
22. Hey guys - thanks for all the suggestions and taking time to understand my frustrations... here goes...
• Are you near any reading lights or any stage lighting or dimmer packs? • Is your guitar properly shielded? • Are all relevant connections balanced line? • Can you borrow a guitar with humbuckers? • Are you on a different earth loop? Is the problem that every body plugs in the mains where the can and mix the pa and lights with the same earth. This makes interesting reading from sound on sound http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug06/articles/qa0806_4.htm
1 - Where in the pit which is front of stage below stage level - we have reading lights on the stands but I'm sure they have a different power supply - there are stage lights at the front of the stage not too far from the pit.. 2 - it's a good question, I'm not sure - I had a good look over the bass when I got it and cleaned in all up inside and out all the wiring looked good but I'm not sure if there was any shielding in the cavities... 3 - The xrl to the wall box for the desk is supplied by the theatre, i'm guessing it is balanced... 4 - No don't think so, I'll have a think on this though... 5 - Another good question, I don't seem to be getting any earth hum so it's quite possible... Thanks for the link I'll check it out...
Daf Lewis on here is your man mate - He is a theatre / touring show specialist and is bound to have seen it all before Suggest a quick PM to him - He's a top bloke too
Thanks for the heads up I'll drop him a PM if things don't work out tonight
I've done quite a bit of pit work-including Full Monty-and have come across the hearing loop buzz a couple of times. I've found that you are more likely to be affected by the loop if the band is set up in front of the stage in a makeshift pit.In these cases,I usually end up working my volume pedal like mad, because the buzz is normally inaudible when playing,so just cut the signal off when theres no note to be played(even between notes if necessary) Hope this helps a bit,and good luck on the show-its a great bass chair.
It's not a makeshift pit, it's a proper permenant type but it is at front of stage but below stage level... I don't have a volume pedal but tend to back the volume off when I'm not playing as you say this helps because when playing there is not too much of a noticeable noise - until it feedbacks Thanks for your input - yeah the show is a good one for bass, plenty to do and some good riffs and grooves too
I'm pretty sure the s1 switch is something to do with the series/parallel wiring, one way is series and one way is parallel, or did i just make that up?!
That rings a bell with me too but not sure what it actually means - I'm not good with electronics...
I've worked in many pits and my experience of theatre sound techs has never been great. I am a bit stubborn (especially on DB) and get the sound I want near me and say to them "what you get out there is up to you, if it sounds sh*t it's your fault" You've got enough on your plate trying to follow the guy waving that f***ing stick and paying more attention to the girly dancers than the band
I'll second that... I want the best sound so the rest of the band and the cast feel comfortable in that they can hear the fundamental parts going in and give them all something to anchor to and so that I'm happy and can concentrate on my playing and not worry about the sound, as you point out there is plenty else to concentrate on
My experience with induction loops in our church is that hum-bucking pups are a major advantage, in that they reject any loop signals. On that basis, stay with the P bass unless your other bass is similarly equipped. Also, a passive bass with the volume at 0 will still pick up from the loop because of the way the volume control is wired. If you need to kill the volume between songs, do it with a pedal, or on the pre-amp. Finally, when I have played outdoors using a cheap power generator, I have found that the buzz increased when I took my hands off the strings - all my gear was checked and working - so you may find that you can lose some of the buzz by not putting the bass down between songs.
My other bass is an Overwater - and from what I recall I've not had problems like this when using it - it's a fretless 5 so not really in keeping with the sound I need for the show, hence the p bass approach... as mentioned previously I back the volume right off my bass when not playing but it's stays in my hands all through the show, no time to put it down... Once again thanks all for your input - lets hope things sort themselves out tonight, I'll get down early and try out some of your suggestions... cheers
