Mackie Onyx 400F Studio Recording Preamp This is a VERY nice bit of kit - when they first came out they retailed for £700. Makes an excellent hardware front-end to a whole range of DAW software apps (1U rack size). I'm only selling this because I'm upgrading my ProTools rig to a OO3R+ so I don't need the extra mic pre-amps that I used this for... It has a huge range of features - which you can read about here on the Mackie site. Only had very little use in a home studio set-up - so is in MINT condition - complete with all the bits & bobs. They go for around £325 new - so a bargain at £200! inc postage. The main features of the Mackie ONYX 400F include:

Performs equally well as an ultrahigh-performance studio mic preamp and a superb 192kHz FireWire interface
Premium FireWire-based studio recording preamp/audio interface
4 flagship Onyx mic preamps with class-leading fidelity and dynamic range
Superb AKM 24-bit/192kHz A/D and D/A converters
Internal 64-bit floating point processing for superior sound and minimal CPU drain
10 x 10 DSP Matrix Mixer with powerful software interface and flexible, recallable routing
Onboard DSP provides custom Control Room / Headphone mixes at near-zero latency
Stand-alone operation: DSP mixer retains settings even when computer is not connected
No channel count sacrifices, even at 192kHz sampling rate
4 additional balanced line inputs; 8 balanced line outputs
TRS 1/4 inch jack inserts on Inputs 1, 2, 3 and 4
Control Room and Dual Headphone Outputs with independent level controls
Dual FireWire ports for daisy chaining and direct connection to Mac or PC
MIDI, Word Clock and S/PDIF I/O
Includes Tracktion 2 Audio Production software and plug-in bundle
Audition, Cubase, Digital Performer, Final Cut, Live, Logic Express, Logic Pro, Nuendo, Tracktion, Tracktor, Reason, Samplitude, Sequoia, Sonar, Soundforge, Soundtrack, Vegas, Wavelab are just some of the supported software titles
 Thanks for looking!
That's got me all nostalgic...I think all the old buggers like me had one of these at some point between 1982 - 87? Before we had the interweb..all we could do was scour the local shops for the latest and best gear, like Carlsbro, HH....of course you're far too young to even imagine how hard it was for us me'lad...
Yep - & I'm one of them old buggers who bought one of these new! Ahhhh... Golden days! Brings back some memories...

The way that many of these shops do their 'business' in a similar way may well have a lot to do with the fact that many of them are owned by the same two characters - the Harrison brothers - with the 'Music Ground' empire now comprising of the following shops: Music Ground Denmark Street Music Ground Manchester Music Ground Leeds Regent Sound Denmark Street Rockers Denmark Street Rhodes Music Denmark Street The Bass Cellar Denmark Street TPA Denmark Street Hanks Denmark Street ...and good old Andys Denmark Street And they also own both Hiwatt (yes - the Hiwatt) and JMI amps and have their fingers in many other pies as well.
....And the wear looks a little odd too. Maybe I'm just getting a bit too cynical in my old age.
Gotta agree about the wear pattern on the back - IMHO that just doesn't look authentic...
Lovely bass.
Thanks Steve! It is indeed & I always enjoyed the look on people's faces when they hear the sound that comes out of it - great big fat tone. It was a Mustang just like this that Hendrix used to play the bass part on All Along The Watchtower....

Had a brand new SWR SM400 head (this is late 1980's when £1,200 was an awful LOT of money) - managed to connect it up wrong to cab so the + and - connectors on the bridged output were reversed (actually quite easy to do if you're not concentrating)... A huge amount of smoke started to come out of the amp together with a nasty burning smell - & it was well & truly shagged.

Time has come to 'thin the herd' (my '65 Jazz went to a new home last week)... Here we have an all original 1966 Fender Mustang bass in Dakota Red finish - complete with a pristine OHSC. It's 43 years old - so obviously has some signs of wear (most notably on the decal - which sometime happens with old Fenders as the water-slide decal was only protected with a very thin top coat of varnish) & some minor corrosion on the chrome of the tuners - but otherwise is in great condition. Plays great & has a lovely rich old tone... Only selling this beauty because I have too many basses & we're in the process of moving house - so some of them have got to go... :| Plenty of other pictures which I can email to you if you're interested. And please ask if you have any questions! £900 - would obviously prefer cash on collection (I live very close to J10 M40) - but can ship if needed... Would also be happy to trade for something/anything interesting (currently looking for a Gibson Thunderbird)!
From memory (and I have a very good memory) this is a reasonable transcription of a conversation at lunchtime today with the owner of a reputable guitar shop in Denmark Street: HJ: That’s quite nice, it’s a ’67 Jazz, right? Him: Yes – nice isn’t it? HJ: Interesting wear pattern on the bottom of the body, it’s gone through to the wood but it’s really shiny there. Is this a re-fin? Him: No, no, no, that’s what they call the [I think he said “base varnish layer” or something, could be wrong] and that always buffs up nicely. HJ: Hmmm. This patch here looks a bit strange too. Are you sure this hasn’t had a re-fin? Him: Well, we had to do some work. HJ: Oh? Why was that then? Him: The previous owner painted it black in 1971 and we had to get it back to the original finish. HJ: You’ve done a great job, then. How on earth did you manage to get all the black off without ruining the paint underneath? Him: It was really difficult, and in the end we had to strip it and then re-build the original finish working from contemporary photographs. HJ: [Desperately trying to keep a straight face] So what’s the story with the fingerboard then? Him: [Clearly getting rattled] What do you mean? What story? HJ: Well it’s in such great condition – it could almost be new. Him: No, no, no, we removed the frets and then … erm … sanded the board level. And then we replaced the original frets. He didn’t actually say “Honest” at the end of the last sentence, but he might as well have done.
The Robbing Bas***ds.

'59 P bass 'Vintage' (make) or 'vintage' (old)
99ster replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
more glaringly obvious: did they do three tone sunburst in 1959? I thought at this point it was two tone
Yes - they did do three tone sunburst Precisions in 1959.... But this bass certainly isn't a 1959!!! -
So you're selling a £500 pickguard
99ster replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The warping on that pickguard is actually pretty bad (the pickguard on my '62 P bass has no warping like that) - so his "ABSOLUTELY NO SHRINKAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" claim is pretty worthless + many of the screw holes are badly opened out & distorted because someone has forced this shrunken guard to fit on a number of different P basses with great big wood wood screws - so the correct screws would now be too small to hold it in place. AND then he expects to get £500+ for it without the aluminium shielding plate.... Yet another eBay c**k. -
Sounds good - let us know what it is like with the cable. Be useful to have a good tuner available easily.
I'll do a full 'review' when the cable arrives...
Don't know if anyone has this yet, would like to try it. They have been mentioned a couple of times in passing but I think it's getting hold of the cable that has stopped people so far. Thomann do one here.
I've just ordered the cable from the Peterson online store (didn't realise that you could get them from Thomann) - was about £10 (comes from the US - will probably take a week or more to get here) + £5.99 for the app. The app does look very cool - did a quick test using the built-in iPhone mic & it was pretty impressive... £15.99 for a Peterson tuner seems like a good price & well worth a punt.
I'm seeing him at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, in September, looking forward to it!
Nice one! I have to say I wasn't a big fan until I saw that last night - but I'd love to see him live now...

Caught Ray LaMontagne on BBC HD Sessions last night - great band with some lovely bass playing from Jennifer Condos (LA session legend - also played with Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Don Henley)... She was playing a very cool looking & fat sounding semi-acoustic (though an old SWR rig I think). Anybody able to ID the bass? Would love to find out what it was. Not having any joy on Google... Thanks! Edit: The bass is an old Harmony H22. Looks like there is even a new re-issue version...

It can be really tricky communicating with folks who don't have English as their first language - I had a nightmare with a Belgian seller on eBay when I commented that it was 'a shame' that he couldn't accept PayPal payments as he would have got the payment much faster than me having to go to the bank to do an international money transfer... This was his reply: I don't like things going in this way , please read exactly what I wrote before , I said that I opened an account with ebay ( paypal ) two weeks ago , and I didn't received the code yet , I didn't said that I don't accept via paypal !!! I said that I don't have it yet , so there is no meaning to talk about shame , for what that I said okay is , if there is a problem for completing the deal , then I relist the item once again , I din't said bad words , even I didn' asked you to pay fees to ebay for selling of this item 3 % that's mean 3 € + installing the item fees 3,90 € , totally is around 7 € , I didn't asked you to pay me that , just tried to give the easier way a chance , I'm not that bad guy Mr. And then another two dozen similar emails whilst I tried to calm him down! This was all due to him not understanding the the subtleties of using the word 'shame' in English!
