1.
Good advice - I had previously scanned the for sale section but somehow managed to totally miss the many 70's basses that are in there We have agreed a price and all is well
Good news - you can't beat a nice early 70' Precision...
 2. Kept any eye on this '66 Jazz - very tempted to snipe it at the end...but got too many Jazz basses already. Even though it wasn't 100% original - £2.9K is a very good price for a '66 Jazz. I hope someone here got it!!???
 3. Crikey! Looks like you need to be talking to Mr Pete Cornish about getting that all wired up & under control!
 4.
In the 'modified' state, less than you'd expect, unless the mods are reversible. Others would know better than me, but, depending on mods, quality of re-finish, maybe £500-1000. Well, that's what I might pay.
+1 ...that sort of price range. A re-finish (no matter how well done) will reduce the value of a vintage guitar by half. That's the law of the vintage guitar jungle. And every further mod (or non-original part) will reduce the value further unless they are easily reversible & leave no permanent marks/damage.
 5.
Hi mate No, I was looking at the Lakland USA DD. Very speculative at present for sure, and having calculated the courier fee and the import duty it's simply too expensice any way. Guys, many thanks for the posts above, doubt I'll be buying this time (unless they accept a pretty low Best Offer), but I guess the above will be usueful to someone in the future Chris
Yep - since the exchange rate has gone very much against us here in the UK the good old days days of buying stuff effectively for half price from the US are well & truly over... As you say Chris - once you add on import duty & shipping it's just not worth the hassle anymore.
 6. Are you looking at buying the '69 Precision they're selling on eBay?
 7.
Thinking of making a pretty substantial purchase. Anyone dealt with these guys? Cheers Chris
No Chris - but I have a good friend in the US who's a serious vintage bass collector... He's bound to have dealt with them I can ask him what he thinks if you like?
 8. Scott Walker = Genius.
 9.
I hear you, but although it is a bit of an investment I also want to gig it, it has sufficient mojo and I don't believe on having instruments and not using them. But that's just me.
I've used this on my very precious pre-CBS vintage Fenders - it just helps to bring the colour & finish 'back to life' in a very subtle way... IMHO It can only enhance their value - keeping a dirty/grimy finish has nothing to do with preserving the value/originality of a vintage instrument.
 10. This is the stuff you want - Fender Color Restorer I've had great results with it...perfect for restoring the finish on vintage guitars.
 11.
Way too much IMO! If the body didn't have the extra pickup (and hideous surround) then it wouldn't seem too bad. Wonder what the odds are on there being a massive, sloppily routed hole under that surround?
Very good chance of a huge messy load of routed holes! "As far as i am aware everything electrical and bodywise is original apart from..." ...all the stuff that isn't. What a mess.
 12.
ho ho well you would, wouldn't you ...
I know a guy who had the unfortunate job of engineering a studio session with Van Morrison - 'a total c**t' was about the best thing he could say about him...
 13.
Fair play to Vintage Ben for sticking his head above the parapet.
Fair play indeed - but that doesn't change the fact that their prices are comically high - let's just take one example from their bass selection: this 'interesting' example of a Fender P bass - £1,295.00 for a 1977 battered P bass that some muppet had made an atrocious hack job of sticking a repro jazz pickup in + a badass bridge. "A lot of bass for the money". They are joking right? Apparently not, as some poor fool was convinced by the 'experts' at V&R that this chopped up bass was a great investment & really was worth £1,295.00 of his hard earned money. Their whole business model is based on supplying the 'good stuff' i.e. really nice top end vintage instruments to serious collectors & celeb players with big budgets - then knocking out junk like that P bass to the gullible. They know full well that anyone who knows their stuff about vintage guitars will never buy from them. And fair play to them for that as well - it's a greedy cynical business that they're in - so good luck to them & their 100% mark-up... But don't then expect to come & post on here acting like you only have our best interests at heart - sorry sunshine that ain't gonna wash.
Pop in and Say hi - you never know I might be playing the Entwistle stack knob
By the way - did you tell John Ludlow you & your mates would be having fun playing around in the showroom with his £30K Entwistle Jazz that you have on consignment? No - I bet you didn't. Shall I tell him for you?
 14.
Check sig for link, on Myspace. CHeck out how you can actually hear my bass! Pretty pleased, although all the dirt got mixed out of my sound, I ran one cab absolutely filthy.
Love that video - when the door gets opened it's like he's opened the doors of Hell! Very cool... We did something similar when we recorded our LP - had an amp room that we shoved the guitarist in & shut the door - he had developed a splendid '1000 yard stare' when finally crawled out... :brow:
 15.
Tape head saturation is prob my favorite. Try it on a bass thats a little to lumpy to pop out of a mix.
Just had to buy that one as well - instant monster bass sound...!
 16.
What does "The bass backlights" mean?
He'll be talking about a technique that's used to test for areas of paint being re-touched/re-finished/over-sprayed - it involves using a UV light (in a dark room) where the non-original paint areas will show up darker. But he meant to say 'Blacklights'...
 17. That's a great price for a fabulous instrument - was one of the best purchases I ever made getting one of these...
 18.
Yeap. Tape head saturation is prob my favorite. Try it on a bass thats a little to lumpy to pop out of a mix. Garry
Yeah - the tape head is very sweet. And I've actually ending up buying the compressor (VERY nice on vocals), eq & de-esser - & the free bonus drum > midi plugin (yep - it really does turns an acoustic drum track into MIDI notes) he gives you is very cool.
 19.
I have the L2007 limiter and have dabbled with all the rest. But, any review I will give is redundant in that they are all available for FREE usable download. Some little features are disabled but they function fully. Try them, for what they cost no one in their right mind could possibly be dissapointed. The L2007 is a cracking limiter with lots of nice features but and sound very transparant for mastering applications. Go, you owe it to yourself. G
Ooooh - just had a good play with all the free Massey plugings - they're b****y great!

I'll go fill my boots! I don't do any mastering myself (booked in at Metropolis for a session with Frank Arkwright at the end of the month) - but I'll have a good tinker with them anyway - especially the de-esser (working with a very troubles-s-s-s-s-s-s-ome singer at the moment!).
 21.
I use the mono-stereo all the time and the mid/side encoder is a pretty nifty little plug in for surgical alterations. Great plugs. Also, check out some of the pay for plugs. They are pretty cheap and stand up against lots of the big boys (waves etc). G
Have you got any of his commercial RTAS plugs? Would be very interested in a review! Thanks.
 22. Just came across this - Free Massey RTAS plugins - the 'talkback' plugin is very useful if you work entirely 'in the box' (i.e. don't have a big desk with an talkback button!)...
 23. You can get this whole video on DVD - on this great collection of Marvin Gaye performances - worth it just for the Jamerson part...
