1. We were 'pro' and have gone hobby as we can't spare the time and commitment to booking up weddings and the like. We used to go out for minimum £100 a man plus hired-in PA. Tonight we go out for nowt (for charity) but we're playing stuff we want to play. No 'Superstition'. No 'Valerie'. We will have a damn good funky time with friends! Different motivation, music vs money. It's a shame we have to pick one, but our set tonight is like a breath of fresh air!
2. Hump de BUMP! (which we will be playing coincidentally)
3. My new funk covers project Superheat will debut supporting punk rockers Ladykillers at a fundraiser for Burmese Trade Unions. Tues 17th April at The Cluny www.facebook.com/superheatband www.thecluny.com/listing/ladykillers We'll be hammering out a half hour or so of Jamiroquai, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Chili Peppers, Meters etc.
4. How's about some singing lessons to improve her projection?
5. I recently did an A/B test of my Mark V Trace AH250 versus my Mark Bass SA450. The main difference (all set flat) was in the lower mids, where the Trace had a right old hump. Some modest tweakage of the graphic got them sounding within the same ballpark. I'd happily gig either. The MB wins on weight, the Trace wins on spangly UV light.

7.
C-Audio power amp, 2 x 400 watts. Collection Newcastle - it's a bit heavy! Sounds great.
Price drop! £100 collected
8. Two 250 watt Celestion SR-4 passive bass bins. Each one is a 2x12" in a 'paraflow' arrangement with a single port on the front. A bit scruffy on the outside but minty fresh inside and perfect working order. Suitable amp also available in the amps and cabs section. Pick-up from Newcastle. £110 ono.
9. C-Audio power amp, 2 x 400 watts. Collection Newcastle - it's a bit heavy! Sounds great.
10. I have the H1 - it's great. Variable gain on a 1-100 scale with a handy red LED clip indicator which flickers on for clipping when you're not recording or flickers off (from a steady on state) when in record mode. Easy hardware controls for everything and great quality results. Drawbacks are it is very susceptible to handling and wind noise, but for indoor rehearsals that's not an issue.
11. With us the organisor gets extra. It's not just the time spent emailing / phoning people, but you're also the public face of the band and end up doing all the liaison with clients on the day. You're the guy in the firing line if it's too loud for Auntie Hilda etc etc. It adds stress to the event that your band mates are oblivious to. After the incentive is set to earn extra money most band members will, by my experience, still not bother their arse to organise anything. Do keep it simple though - once you get into 'but I've got to drive 10 miles further to get there', or 'I have to buy guitar strings' type stuff you're on a road to nowhere.
12. It was briefly mentioned earlier, but a big culprit of 'mush' in many guitar-based bands is the use of digital effects units. They often have settings optimised for sounding great on their own in your bedroom but may be severely lacking in mids when it comes to fitting in with a live band.
13. +1 for Rio, great exercise in ghost notes.
14. First Bass - 'Arirang' p-bass copy thing (no, I have no idea either) Go To Bass - MM Bongo 5 Your Bass - Yamaha TRB5
15. I find slapping is a bit harder on a 5 simply because there's an extra string to think about dampening to keep it clean. On a 4-string my thumb would usually peep over the neck and damp the E, but on a 5er it takes a bit more care. Not that it seems to bother Les Claypool like...
16. I'm a big fan of wedge cabs as most of my gigs are PA supported. This Mark Bass Club 151 looks just the job but there are precious few user opinions on the interweb. Has anyone here tried one?
17. We're at the Bamburgh Castle Inn, Seahouses, Northumberland on New Years Eve, 10pm-11pm and 11.30pm-12.30am. Free entry, free beer. One of those is a lie.
18. Not mine, but looks a great deal: http://newcastle.gumtree.com/newcastle/89/66528389.html
19. If it's that bad, I'll come and save it before you skip it!
