1.
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f32/interviewing-bassist-stories-866617/ It's on Talkbass so deep apologies to Basschat for posting it, but it deserves reading. Also, I had no idea it existed until BC member Miles'tone posted it on my thread about old music mags, Miles, massive gratitude to you for posting the link mate! It's a thread started by Thomas Wictor, an ex Bass Player mag journo who got pissed off with the new BP editor killing his stories and interviews. It's a BIG thread, and it's full of Wictor's anecdotes about his inteviews, and working for BP, and loads of very juicy inside stuff about your favourite bassists, much of it necessarily anonymous. I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.
Hey thanks Xilddx, I knew you'd be as enthralled as I am! Yes got to agree with you that Thomas Wictor is one of the best bass journos we've had. I love his writing and the Interviewing Bassists threads are just amazing on so many levels. So much to absorb and learn from (I find myself going back to it to take notes on all the fantastic album suggestions/youtube links - such great new music to get turned on to!) But it's the 'all laid bare' personal and spiritual matters that unfold with nothing less than full support and positive well wishing from all the Talkbassers that got me (yes, on Talkbass! ). Really restored my faith in people. His writing style (if that's the right word as it is straight from the heart) is so universal everyone can relate to it. Inspiring stuff!
2. I absolutely agree with the OP here. Has anyone here heard of the (ex) Bass Player writer Thomas Wictor? He wrote that great book "In Cold Sweat - Interviews With Really Scary Musicians" (his legendary interview with Frank Zappa bassist Scott Thunes takes up nearly half the book!) Well he was writing for Bass Player at, what anyone who remembers how that mag used to be would call it, it's creative peak. The turn of events that finally led to it becoming the bland, thin paged ad-fest that it is today is explained in this epic (and amazingly troll-free) thread he started on talkbass - the best thread I have ever read on a bass forum bar none (no offence intended to Basschatters or anyone anywhere else in the bass world whatsoever) The said downturn in the quality of Bassplayer which he was so passionate about actually affected his physical health in the end but this thread is brimming with great interviews and stories that we're canned by the new editor at the time due to them being 'not relevant' anymore. I really wish we had the Bass Player of old, I'd still be buying it if it was like it used to be (and don't even get me started on our good old 'Bassist'!) Check it out... http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f32/interviewing-bassist-stories-866617/
3. A short instrumental reprise of "Sweet Transvestite". A great foot-stomper/hand-clapper that can be vamped on til you're done. Job done.
4.
Yeah, it's great, isn't it?
Just pi**ed myself laughing and woke up the baby. Cheers!
5. I remember reading somewhere that GHS makes Lakland's flats for them, maybe try the GHS Precision flats instead of Chromes or Labella's? Not tried them myself but they have a great rep (I use Fender CL flats by the way - always meant to try the GHS flats but I'm loath to change these Fenders as I'm loving them. If it aint broke and all that..)
6. They do come as standard in the 60th anniversary Precision though.
7. I had one of these pickups in one of my basses after I played a '62 AVRI and loved the tone. I agree with all the above descriptions of it's tone. They really are nice. They also came fitted in some of the custom shop P-basses too so can't be bad! I replaced mine and went with a Lindy Fralin P pup which is really nice but at twice the price as the Fender original, it's no way twice as good! If I had to rebuild my bass for some reason I would happily buy the Fender again no worries. Amped up with a band it's as good as anything really. As for whether you should buy one right now is a different matter. Why not try that Mex pup you've just bought and see how it goes with that. If it sounds great and does what you want you've just saved yourself an extra 80 quid.
8. Just received a pair of P-bass knobs that I bought off Nick. Dead simple transaction, they arrived quickly and were exactly as advertised, easy peasy. Cheers Nick! Si.
9. What a great bit of luck! I had initially bought Geoff's Vintage V4 bass and as we were sorting out the sale he noticed that I was selling a Vintage Jaco fretless that he took a fancy to. He then offered to use the V4 towards a trade with me instead which we did. Geoff came up with a plan and shipped the V4 to me in his own hardcase and I used it to then send the Jaco back to him. Brilliant! I'm really pleased with the V4 and it's exactly as he described it to be. Communication and updates were fantastic throughout the trade which was very reassuring. A top chap to deal with indeed. Thanks very much Geoff, it's been a real pleasure! Simon.

11. Word Of Mouth withdrawn. (Gonna try my luck on ebay)
12. Oscar Pettiford. Love him on the Bud Powell album Live at the Essen jazz festival 1960. It's a classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGc4-RFh6uE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
13.
I remember The Bass Centre at Wapping very well and fondly. It was a regular haunt. I bought and sold a number of guitars there and some Trace Elliott amplification. Always helpful staff - if I recall right Nick was particularly helpful. I bought my MM Sterling there in the mid 90s - still my main bass today - and Nick threw in a hard case complimentary which has the The Bass Centre logo embossed on it. Still use that today too. A sadly missed store.
That's right and the store manager was an American guy called Grant. Great bloke. All the guys there were great and very tolerant of the skint young wide-eyed grommit I was back then!
14. Hey Oversoul. I've had a few pm's from our Basschat Bredren in a few different Euro countries and unfortunately the cost of posting this bass to mainland Europe (£90 was the best deal I found with insurance - Interparcel) makes the total price higher than you buying a new one in Portugal. If you want to pay that much in postage I'll gladly send it but I doubt you would! The only way this will be a bargain to somebody is if I post it in the UK sorry. Wish I could do better for you. Cheers, Si.
15. Just sold a set of Schaller jazz pickups to Joe, instant payment, great communication - top chap! In fact he said it was less than 24 hrs from the first PM to receiving and installing them! (South Wales to Newcastle - not bad eh?) Surely that's got to be a BC record? Cheers Joe.

17.
If you're referring to the Brune Street one, that was only a pale shadow of the mighty Wapping Bass Centre. Words cannot describe how great that place was. Or the stock they had. Fender, Gibson, Warwick, Dingwall, Alembic, Smith, Status, Parker, Musicman, Vigier, Ovation, Washburn, Steinberger, Kubicki, Yamaha, Ibanez.... And that's just the basses. Never mind the amps, strings, accessories.....
Yeah I used to be in the Wapping Bass Centre everyday when I used to study at the M.I. which was directly above it ( mid nineties). It was like aladdin's bass cave. They used to get so many famous players giving clinics there too after hours. Saw and met Jeff Berlin and Stu Hamm there but still to this day feel gutted I missed JJ Burnel's.
18. Aw very sad news. I saw him in the acoustic tent at Glastonbury in 2002 and thought at the time wow this is the guy who opened Woodstock and set the tone for it all really. He played his arse off that day like he was still there. So passionate. A true legend for sure.
19. Sold pending the usual to captain black. Cheers for that gjones, they are great pickups for sure but the J bass I was keeping these for is now up for sale too. Cool vid!
20. http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/products/bass-261/schaller-electric-bass-guitar-pair-of-pick-ups-jbx-series-1228.aspx I have a set of black Schaller JBX pickups which are pretty much the same pickup as the Dimarzio Model J. Same design, appearance and wiring options. They sound the same too. Manufactured to a very high standard in Germany. Here's a link to them (above). They are used but in very good condition. £50 posted. Cheers, Si.
