1.
What, the barman ex of Coronation Street? :-)
No, but he does actually play bass for said barman's real life "band"...
2.
With your available budget, I'd be getting on to Maruszczyk to get your own spec built.
That may be where I'll end up as I like a lot of what Adrian is about. A lot of folks would say "it's not a Fender" but I really don't care what the headstock says, or if it doesn't use the same bridge or tuners. If it feels like a 60's P and sounds like a 60's P, it's perfect for me! And I could get it in the colour I want... I'd also considered AV Basses, but that's right at the top of my budget range. Drawn to them as Keith Duffy is a fan of them, and there's a man who knows a good bass...
3.
I agree with Steve. I have a 62 re issue which I imported from Japan a few years ago, fitted it with a lollar pick up and its really nice. Has the wide 44mm neck and plays well. I have an L series precision bought in the 60s, [not all original unfortunately] and I can tell them apart but theres not much in it. I also like the necks on the classic 50s mex reissue.
I also like the necks on the classic 50s Mexican P. Played a new one last year and was very, very impressed with it. Having owned a Roadworn Jazz I can only imagine how nice the 50s Roadworn P is (never had hands on one)... Problem is I'm much more a rosewood fan than maple.
4.
http://www.ishibashi...cd=08-325079704 That's £395. About £500 imported I would think.
That's REALLY nice!
5.
D'oh. Forgot the other obvious. With your budget you could get a very nice JV Squier. Again, I have had one of those and they are similarly excellent. Not sure I'd put it above the Japanese Fender 62 (there will be those who disagree vehemently - probably people selling them) but well within your budget and is likely to appreciate.
I did have an excellent SQ Squier from a similar era and it was outstanding when compared to my US P bass. A JV is a possibility.
6.
Get a good used Fender American Standard Precision that feels right and plays well, then if you need to upgrade the sound you can just drop in any number of great sounding pickups.
I already have a USA P Bass. It doesn't feel ANYTHING like a 60's P bass unfortunately. Sounds good, just like a P bass, but again not in the same league as a good 60's P.
If you don't want sunburst then you could also contact Mark at Limelight (google classic and cool guitars) who puts together excellent basses at a very reasonable price.
Limelight were my first thought actually but Mark uses off the shelf necks (well fettled obviously!) of the same dimensions as current production Fender basses. Not the same beast at all.
7. Budget-wise under £2k. Obviously the further under that the better! The Japan reissue sounds VERY interesting...
8.
Offers and trade propositions posted in 'For Sale' ads are systematically deleted. They are to be made by Private Message (PM...) only. Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
Damn Dad, what did I miss?!
9. Just wondering what folks would suggest as a good reproduction of a 60's p bass? Really looking for a 60's version of the Fender Roadworn 50's P bass. Doesn't necessarily need to be reliced, but would like something with rolled fingerboard edges, etc so it FEELS like it's been played since the 60's. The 3 that come to my mind are Bravewood, Moollon (maybe) and Maruszczyk. Just wondering what everyone else would suggest?
10.
So what's that plan now? Use them for gigging?
My original intention was to put together a silent band rehearsal setup for home, based around an X18, an electronic drum kit, a few PODs (or the like - iPad running Bias FX in my case I would think) and a decent set of in-ears. Still working on the drum kit element of it (converting an acoustic kit with mesh heads and DIY triggers) but I have almost everything else - need mics of course! The last thing a (currently) non-singing bass player would think of... I'm without a band at the minute but hoping this'll be the spark I need/have been lacking of late! Kind of "if you build it, they will come" sort of thing...

14. Good choice on the Hartke Attack by the way. I had mine up for sale briefly and pulled it after playing it again. Greatly underrated preamp...
15. Had my 5 string Sire tuned drop A when I had it. Worked grand so can't see any reason the 4 wouldn't handle it, other than needing thicker strings to keep the tuning taught. I ordered a D'addario of the heaviest gauge I could get for my lowest string. The nut will need attention and the bass set up appropriately. If you can match the tension on the neck (with a higher gauge of string tuned low) everything else is really unimportant. Only issue I would guess is the bridge being able to handle the thicker gauge strings... I couldn't handle a 120 gauge B string though... far too floppy for me!
16. Thinking about spending money I don't have! Colour isn't quite right (looking more of a Sherwood Green) but the rest is pretty close to how I'm thinking...
17. Received a set of used UE900s the other day from another forum user. These things are a revelation! Haven't tried playing bass through them yet, but listening to music I'm familiar with (I thought!) I'm hearing detail I've never heard before. Most impressive...
18. Next up in the great clear-out of 2017 is this Tascam MP-BT1 MP3 bass trainer. I honestly had forgotten buying this. I believe it arrived during the madness surrounding the birth of our 2nd child and as such lay in its unopened packaging until such times as my "room of requirement" offered it up recently! I haven't used it other than to charge it, turn it on and confirm operation with bass and headphones, but it is detected by my work laptop so transferring MP3s to it should be a drag and drop affair. Comes boxed with USB lead which charges it from standard USB phone charger (but doesn't let you use the unit for its intended purpose at the same time strangely). There is a 5v adapter port if you need to power it for use, but adapter not included (units were sold without these - another strange choice by Tascam there!). [s]£50 excl. postage ON HOLD PENDING THE USUAL[/s] SOLD
19. Next up in the great clear-out of 2017 is this rather lovely Pumpernickel compressor. Ovnilab rated this "a bit better than the immediate competition (Keeley Bassist, Maxon CP9Pro+, MXR M87)". Read more about it here: http://www.ovnilab.c...ws/pumper.shtml Not available other than as a kit so, being the tinkerer I am, I thought I'd give it a whirl. Unfortunately no matter how hard I try I just can't like compression. Great looking pedal, top/North mounted jacks (as it should be!). £55 excl postage
20. Bought a pedal from Jack a little while ago. Great transaction from start to finish. Wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again!
21. To quote a manager I work with "you keep bringing me problems, bring me solutions!"
22. Read some of his other sales. They can make a body from solid rosewood... Wonder what CITES would make of that!
23. Certainly buy used. Your money goes MUCH further, and you stir the GAS around the community... I would add that although they're not my cup of tea, the now discontinued USA Musicman SUB 5 is also an excellent option (not talking about a Sterling SUB or SUB RAY5, 35 or whatever confusing article they produce nowadays). Having owned a Musicman 5 as one of my first "big money" 5 strings, I'd say the USA SUB 5 I played a while back was every bit as good as the full fat version and, features-wise, closer to a 5 string version of a true Musicman than the actual Musicman 5 string is!
24. Not much to add that hasn't been mentioned already really. I've owned a lot of 5 strings over the years. I'd say 50/50 based on your budget (as in half above, half below). Lakland were always a firm favourite of mine. Owned 2 of their 5 strings. The 5501 I had was superb and was well under your budget. Compared favourably with every other 5 string I've ever played, regardless of budget. I also had a Sire 5 which was also very good. A tie with the Lakland in a lot of areas, but it's flaw for me was that the fretboard radius meant the B and G strings (when set up correctly) were louder than the rest as they were MUCH closer to their respective pickup poles, especially the B. If that were easily corrected it would be a stonkingly good bass for the money. Recently had a Yamaha 425x and again, excellent. Ergonomically it wasn't perfect for me as the string spacing at the nut was tighter than I like, but might suit you perfectly. A left field choice if you can find one, is a used ACG Graft 5. I owned one briefly (the briefly bit was intentional - wanted to check out Alan's work before committing to a custom build!) and Alan's work is exceptional. When they appear they are typically within your budget. Happy hunting!
