With so many +1s, I've just ordered a pair of ER20s from ebay - £7.40 delivered. No point in mucking about at that price!

Some important stuff there. Just wondering though, has anyone tried the Radians self-mould earplugs? They seem to go for around £10-£15 and whilst they don't have filters (so probably block every frequency a similar amount) look a bit more comfy than the foam cylinders and the like. Might be worth it if you can't stretch to the "proper" custom plugs...

Hi Dave, and welcome - I'm a newbie of about two weeks and completely agree re the lessons! Edit - BTW, how are you getting on with the Lindo - saw a few on ebay when I was looking for a bass but couldn't find much writeup about them.

Sore fret fingers. Sorta hoping they are going to go away soon... The soreness, not the fingers. The latter could make playing even more difficult. Q - got standard out-of-the-box roundwounds on the VMJ. Would Flats make things more comfortable? Or should I just man-up?

I've been out of the learning field for a couple of decades (apart from tedious computer stuff) so got a bit of a shock when (mentioning to my bass tutor that I'm prone to doing this and that wrong) her face lit up and asked if I was ok with her nitpicking - to which I replied in the positive and that surely that was what she was there for? Almost as if, as has been mentioned previously, telling students that they are doing something wrong is seen as an insult rather than something constructive. Bizarre...

35yr old bloke, been playing for less than two weeks (but with the help of an ace tutor who really inspires me to keep practising). Fret fingers are feeling a bit delicate, but apart from that am wondering why the hell I didn't do this 20 years ago. Already feel totally at home with my bass and don't like putting it down! Currently learning some basic 12-bar blues, along with some simple Beatles numbers. Nowhere near coming out of the spare room (and certainly not until I've some decent volume - my old 10w geetar practise amp can barely go above talking volume ) but intend to once I have had a bit more time and practise.

Result - kudos to Mr. Foxen and Shockwave. Thanks guys. Popped up to Kingswood today and there was indeed a Squier VM J-Bass '77 in black there, in as-new condition (really - I couldn't see a mark on it anywhere) for £175. There was also an older Yammy in natural finish (which sounded nice, but the action was a bit too high on the upper strings for me) for £95, and a black Ibanez for £115 (good nick, but had a slightly noisy tone pot and the intonation was out on the bottom string - all easily fixable). But for me, the action, sound and condition of the VMJ just blew the others away. Really liking the maple inlayed neck too. Bit more than I was intending, but he chucked in a strap and for what is essentially a new VMJ, I can't complain at all. Have to pick it up tomorrow as was on the minibeast today, and strapping the VMJ to my back didn't seem like too good a plan. Can't wait to get it home and start practising on it!
