I still reckon their VSP and Limited edition offerings are much better than the US Custom Shop jobbies ......................and they're cheaper, too.

Try this: http://www.theguitaremporium.com/ I have no affiliation other than as a customer.

I've just ordered a Fender Japan JB/62 VSP. Having been looking for a decent J Bass for years I finally discovered that, to my taste, the Japanese Fenders are much better than the US builds (including Custom Shop) and are cheaper hence better value for money. I've spent the last year or so being a pain trying out so many J Basses around the country before pulling the trigger - now waiting patiently for the call to say it has arrived........

Try a bass drum instead of a kick drum.

Enjoy it, bonnie lad!

Ohhh!...it's Jethro Tull Living In The Past..I never knew that!
Jazzneck replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Just found this thread - wierd coincidence. Having learnt this lovely track 'Living In The Past' when it was first released I occassionaly use the intro riffs as a warm up piece before a gig. So we are at an outdoor pub gig last August and the main man (vocals and guitar) turns to me at the end of the first set and tells me to play "that practise thing you do in C". So I start playing it quietly and two bars later the rest of the band are in and we play the whole song through and all landed together. The first time ever for me to do this. Turns out that the rest of the band had gone away and learned the song and dumped me right in it. It was great - I lived in the past and it worked so well that one of the audience who had to leave a bit ealy came up and thanked us; said he'd never heard a band other than JT play it live and plonked a £20 note on the PA cab telling us to buy a drink or two for making his day. And we are only a three piece with no flute...... -
Willie Shakespeare said it all, IMHO. Polonius: Neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.Hamlet Act 1, scene 3, 75–77

What strings are you currently using?

Status Flats, Black Tapewounds and I've just put some Half Rounds on my OLP Stingrayalike. I'm very lucky, Status are just up the road from me so life is easy - I just give 'em a ring and collect. Great people and great service. -
Well-pee'd off that I couldn't make this after all. Hopefully, next time.
Me too - sorry, it was grand daughters 1st Birthday - I think you older ones will understand.

I must be an a*hole. My gig = My rig ergo Your gig = Your rig. I experienced this one..... Local young band had been booked to play the village pub (50 people max in the bar) about 100yds up the lane from our house. Publicity had been done and ads out 4 weeks before the event, so they all knew. 8pm on said night there's a knock on my front door - guitard and bass man from said band standing there spaced out and twitching telling me that they had "fogotten" to bring their bass rig (they live 3 miles up the road) and asking could they borrow mine. Even though this wrankled a bit I told them "OK, just this once" and dragged my Ampeg HPT115 combo to the door for them. "Ah" says the bassman "I'd prefer to use your V4 head and 4x10 cab - that things too small" "F*ck Off, you ungrateful bustud" was my reply. They played the gig - started at 8.40pm - at pretty high volume. I wandered down to see how they were doing it and discovered that the bassmans Laney combo had miraculousily appeared in time as if by magic.

Should be grateful he wasn't holding his iPad aloft to film the gig as well.

stringing a fretted bass with flatwound strings
Jazzneck replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
I still do on mine - Stingray, Precisions, Mustang, Ampeg and I don't change 'em unless I'm really forced to when they don't hold tune anymore (and then I sulk and play with bacon fat covered fingers until the buggers sound like a bass and not a piano.) -
I send a pre-EQ signal to the desk, then roll off some of the bottom and top end for my onstage sound. Works well - could you do something similar? (obviously this is for a DI signal). I also agree that many soundmen will try turn your lovely growly sound into a dull thud...
This - and I try to talk nicely with the soundman (calling him Sir, not Pillock, seems to help) so all he has to do is amplify my sound. Only had a problem once, so far - in a Suffolk theatre; the "engineer" was a metal drummer so I ended up with a sound that did not fit exactly with the Chicago blues band I was playing with at the time.

Big thank you to Mick for not only the pickup but for his great attitude and hospitality. I'm just sorry i was in such a rush and didn't have time for a pukkah chin wag and cup of tea, next time definitely. Absolute gent - you can deal with maximum confidence. Thanks again, Mick.
Quick answer then - I have no interest whatsoever in upright basses so I don't give a monkeys - sorry All I know for sure is however you're made it makes perfect sense to choose an instrument designed for the way you're made rather than one designed for someone who's made differently to you. What's so difficult to understand about that ?
Dr Dave - I agree with you completely. I'm right handed and there are some RH basses, let alone left handers, that I don't get on with either.
-
Mate - folk play what they want , I couldn't care less BUT quoting examples of players playing an instrument the wrong way round does not prove it to be a good way to do it. However - choosing an instrument that's designed to suit the left or right handed player you are does show that you're interested in doing a good job of work because you picked the best tool for the job. I believe yonder super rich Scouser first played right handed violin basses upside down because of availibility issues but at least realised that a feder style bass upside down looks and plays like a pig. Later - same dude swapped to basses that were designed for players like him. In short - he approached the issue like a professional and not some 'I know better than the rest of the planet and I want to look cool and grounded' dip stick.
Quick question - if we all played upight basses would it matter if we were left or right handers? ........97,98,99 - change hands!
It's one of the 60's 'Telecaster' Basses, the first fender 'reissue' bass effectively, with a Dimarzio Jazz pickup. It currently resides at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manchester, or it did the last time I was in. "What did Evil Kenievel want?" 'God sent him' "What?!" 'God sent him...' "On a feckin' Suzuki?!" Great film, loved it for years.
Thank you, Andy - now on with the fun..............
-
A certain Mr. Hendrix seemed to manage OK playing right handers upside down, didn't he? I'm just wondering if this one is a very old P bass which has been messed about, that's all.
-
Really enjoying this and keep the fun stuff coming - but has anyone any info on the bass, please? i.e. what is it? where is it? who has it now? etc.
Jimmy Rabbitt to a young lad standing at a lift with a horse: "You're not going to take him up the lift, are ye?" "I have to, the stairs will kill 'im" :-)
Best lines in the film for me..........

Eventually watched The Commitments DVD last night and thoroughly enjoyed it - Mustang Sally included.... Now, I've got my anorak on...... I was intrigued by the Fender bass being used. It looks like an old Precision or Telecaster bass and after a serious bit of squinting (not at the lady singers this time) I think I could make out that it was fitted with a white/cream Jazz style pickup, possibly with square magnets. Does anybody know anything about this particular bass?

If this was in the "Off Topic" bit - BC members only - I may scare the life out of you....

Good wedding gig last night - full rock'n'roll set, no slow numbers at all! The sound was good, the food was good and the beer even better. Collapsed into bed at 02:45hrs only to be woken by next doors dog at 05:10hrs. C'est la Vie! Funnily enough, that was the married couples first dance song as well.
