Why do you want to know what gear your heroes use?
Jazzneck replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Maybe, C**tyb******s, but the guy who sold Jaco his #1 Jazz categorically states* that the woolly-hatted one rammed two whole packs of Golden Grahams up the truss rod channel to improve tuning stability. * See page 92 of '1001 facts about Jaco's gear that'll make you gouge your own eyes out' (Random House) .
Jaco did not - fact - I've still got my golden pair! Used and shrinking, though......... -
Excellent - now I understand why transparent scratchplates exist. Lovely bass, my man - enjoy it and keep it!
If you really want everything taken into consideration then your licence fee will need to increase.
Or the Beeb stops reporting on daft subjects?
-
I'm not worked up and it is a daft news story - I'm just pointing out how a "news" story can appear to be manipulated. I don't care who's being compared, it's just that the comparisons are made and reported as "fact" without everything being taken into consideration (and using my licence fee to do so ).

Morning all - no problems musically, personally, etc. other than it seems to me that Auntie, yet again, selects and reports to its target audience a tale with limited information and not the full story. That's all........

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/22318627 cf: Please Please Me by The Beatles - 76 weeks in the charts Total, 30 consecutive weeks at No 1 in the chart, 0.5M sales in the UK, >2.0M Worldwide - all when the cost of a vinyl album was iro 10% of the average 20 year olds wage in 1963 and no downloads available - or am I not thinking straight?

Just watching this on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qQnGfZpIfY One of the comments says it all - All citizens should be required by law to listen to Lowell George and Little Feat 'Waiting for Columbus' album once before proceeding on with their lives. Good on yer, Bilbo - well done! Be aware though don't be alarmed in that I will likely be there to see Jim Mullen. Hows about trying to get Mick Hanson on as well - that other famed Suffolk jazz boy?
I've just had an idea . I'm contacting Korg this afternoon............
Question to Korg......... Hi, I have had KORG PX4B since 2002 and have recently been using it as a practise tool through a small valve amplifier. I only use one sound setting (MOTOWN) and various rhythms to play along with. I've always been a bass, lead, amp man but on Sunday morning I tried the Korg PX4B through my main gigging rig, voila, I had the sound I have been looking for for years. Today I tried the set-up in a full band rehearsal and it was superb. I have an idea...................... Now for the question - I find that the box, leads, power supply etc. are very fiddly and get in the way. As I only wish to use this one setting, MOTOWN, I'm wondering if there is a way I can build into my bass guitar a circuit/chip/preamp type thingy that can be loaded solely with this MOTOWN preset. My ideal would to have only this preset patch (all other features in the PX4B are redundant as far as I'm concerned and I do not want un-needed kit to worry about) built into my bass circuit directly inside the guitar so that I retain the bass/lead/amp set up for gigs, but have the signal/sound of Korg MOTOWN. It must be possible? How can I do it? Can you help, please? Answer from Korg.......... Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately we do not produce custom made products so unless you were planning on stripping the PX4B's guts and installing them into your bass, there is no other way of achieving that. We cannot offer much advice on how to make this happen either as we are unable to offer support for modifications to our products but if you are determine enough to achieve that, everything is possible. Best regards, OK - as Korg won't do it, is there any super technical guy out there that can do this for me, please? Many thanks in anticipation....... -
My tuppence worth of experience....... Many, many years ago I went to work on the technical side of a development product which I had come across during my previous company's job. I was employed to improve the product so that customers found it easier to convert. I'd been at the company for a few weeks when the MD asked me (as a 26 year old technologist) why I thought the product was not selling as it seemed to be "the answer to a maidens prayer" at the time. My comment was that for the price being asked, the product seemed too cheap - "what's wrong with it?" So the crafty old fox doubled the price the following week and sales went exponential during the following year and continued to grow to the point that the business is still very profitable and still growing today. Do not confuse cost with price. Market perception is very important. Quality and customer service is king.

How soon after first picking a bass up did you gig?
Jazzneck replied to bobpalt's topic in General Discussion
First picked up a bass in/around 1978. After 2 years I gave up, but kept the bass. Went back to it 3yrs ago and still not gigged yet. I went to a gig in a local pub on this last Saturday and was amazed how useless the bass player was; very poor fretting, single finger plucking etc...
So did James Jamerson............ -
Blimey, Mani joins BassChat! And now ...Fumps!!!!!

5 days, but I had been "playing" guitar for about 6 months. Yes, it was the early '60s, it was a youth club gig and we played Beatles, Shadows and a lot of 12 bar RnR. And yes I was cr+p (still are) but it was great fun - I also discovered the bonus of being a bassman standing at the back was watching the girl backing singers bums wagglin' in time with the music. -
Back in 2002 I bought a new Korg PX4B at a promotional event in the US for $25. When I got home I threw it in the bottom drawer wondering why the heck I got it for as I have a preference for a good 4 string with flats, Ampeg valves and no effects. Last week I decided that I needed more serious practise as there is new music on the horizon and I wanted a drum beat to play along with so for the first time out comes Pandoras Box. Being a lazy git I plugged into the nearest amp - an Epi Valve Jr. using my bitsa PBass and the Korg. I selected the "Motown" preset and off I went, amp volume set at 8 o'clock. Bl**dy H*ll - it's nearly as good as the Portaflex or V4BH and I can play at low volume so Mrs.Jazzneck is happy. At last I can practise at home with a sound which is very similar to what I try to get live. Oh, the wasted years......................
What really gets me though, is guitarists. They attribute all their tone to the amp, or the pickup, which does make a difference to their tone, but the biggest change they could make is strings. First set of guitar strings I got from my local was a set of prosteels, and the guy was really shocked that i had bought them, and says even now, over 6 months down the line, nobody has bought any more prosteels for guitar. He said guitarists just buy the standard strings, and don't even think about the difference a different set of strings would make to their tone. That's the moment he knew I was a bassist, when I bought prosteels for a guitar
Interesting comment, this. I was at a party/gig last week when numerous guitarists got up and played through an old Vox AC15 amp. I heard a Les Paul, three Strats (US and Japanese), a Squier Tele, a ladida PRS and a Steinberger headless played through the Vox - yes there were differences but the tones I heard were very similar - strange that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh-2_kdVcyA Played this once at a wedding in Dorset. I was there as a guest of the brides parents and got pulled up to play bass on one number and this was it. We all had downed a few sherberts and it was fantastic - it was groovin', laid back and cool - loads of space.... Don't know who the band was, only that it was a great moment in my musical life.
-
Ah - you mean SOUL MUSIC a la Tamla Motown, Stax etc.......... like wot we used listen to, dance to and play in the mid 1960s.
-
Can someone tell me what "Northern Soul" is, please?
-
No way, Pedro - Black shirt and trousers from Tescos with a bitsa P bass in a coverish band,
I have an Ampeg BA-115, and it's never let me down. Though it does weigh as much as an Austin Maxi.
+1 - I have the BA115 HPT version which has a valve in the pre-amp. Have played everywhere from small pubs to town halls with it, sounds great, it's on wheels and has never let me down. (grabs head so as to touch wood ). Not sure if they are still available new, though.
