1. Old Ampeg basses Old style Fender basses Gibson EB2 bass - still want one. Valve amps Zemaitis guitars.
2. I don't know anything about this one but I do have a made in USA V4BH head which goes through a 4x10 HLF Classic cab. 100W of Ampeg valve power which, to my taste, is superb. I have played clubs, town halls and outdoor festivals (mosttimes going through the PA) with no probs. Most line ups have been with guitarists using Fender Twins, Mesa Boogies and big Marshalls and for one three year period a drummer who could have given John Bonham a bl**dy good run for his money, volume wise. I suggest you give it a try but make sure you have good cab. that works with it, too.
3. Transistor amps
4. The stuff I play is soul, blues, jazzy - more 'old school' if you like - and this pickup tends to (my ears) give a harder, more gainy modernish sound which I find difficult to control when I get excited playing live. In six string guitar terms, it's like the difference between playing a high gain humbucker fitted strat compared to an early '60s strat; I prefer the '60s strat. I hope that makes sense?
5.
Goodo - does this mean there will be a corner for us old, incompetent gits to sit down, talk and attempt to play the simplistic, non slappin' stuff through nice quiet amplifiers whilst drinking tea and smoking ciggies? Please?
NB - post modified to ensure selective membership to include me.
6.
Blimey it's gonna be a big'un! Just thought for a vintage 'corner' .............. 10.
No.
Have I inadvertently asked the wrong question?
11.
For 40+ people or 40+ rigs ?
12. Oi, Bilbo - are you getting Mick Hanson back to his old stomping ground?
13. Blimey Moses - is the venue big enough?
14.
available funds currently earmarked for a new more practical car (goodbye beloved Alfa) I think the missus may object. A small investment in her musical future however I can probably get away with!
Congaratulations and well done! But don't get rid of the Alfa - we managed for 5 years to use a real Mini (with a roof rack) for me, the missus and two boys. Keep the Alfa or give it to me.
15. The first one looks like the Aria J which I sold to someone in Witham about 10 years ago; not sure about the headstock though.....
16. Playing in an amateur support band to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, the Hard Road era. 1) All the gear set up, sound check finished and Mr. Mayall and Peter Green behind the back curtain jamming country blues on the house piano and his Les Paul. Mr. Mayall asking for a simple bass line to be played and John McVie telling me to join in whilst he got a beer in! 5 minutes of simultaneous terror and joy. And then to be thanked by them both? Trembling again whilst I'm typing this. 2) Playing a set drunk and ruining an evening for the band and punters alike. I received the biggest bollocking I have ever experienced but was kept on by the band after I offered to resign. Never did that again - maximum 2 pints per gig since; one after sound check, one at half time. A real bass player I know has a saying: "Rehearse sober, play sober. Rehearse p*ssed, play p*ssed."
17. And another two memorable bass lines....... Simple, innit?
18. Frank Wilson's 'Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)' Stonkin', Smokin', Rollin' - who played it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwvpeYiQwss
19.
I could potentially do a 15/20-ish minute workshop on "Practical considerations when moving to double bass, gear needs and solving on-stage difficulties" or such like? Would this be of interest? I warn I am still basically rubbish and a blagger at DB but I have done a fair amount of gigging and know the practical issues, so this may be of value to some considering taking the plunge
Yes please! (from the rubbish blagger at EB)
20. My £60 s/h refretted OLP MM Stingrayalike is like this, too. My best r'n'r/blues gigging bass ever. All I've done is changed the pickup to a £10 s/h Artec MBR4 MM pickup thanks to The Greek. (I was going to give it to my grandson....................)
21. I made a mistake and bought these D'Addarios to try on my Jazz Bass instead of my normal Status preference. They have been on the jazz for a week and played for 15 minutes maximum. They are not for me (I don't like the feel of them) so if anyone wants 'em for £20 posted to anywhere in the UK, please contact me. Thank you.
22. Yet another big Thank You for a perfect mint white scratchplate for my Japan Jazz Bass. The Bass Doc is one of lifes all round good guys.......
23. Wot? No '51-'53 Precision? I agree with the Zemaitis though...
