  1. Will have a look thanks.
  2. any love for the Yammy BB 235?
  3. N Wales - thanks anyway - not the sort of 'look' I 'd go for in a bass TBH sorry.......
  4. Hello all! Looking for a 5er - What's the general view on what the best 5 string bass for the money - circa £500 - new or used. Looking for something that will cover most 'bases' sound wise - would like something that can do typical function band fayre - don't mind passive or active. My usual players are Jazzes, a P and I have an EB MM Stingray 3 band, so very 'Fender' derived! Cheers!!
  5. Are these a 1x15” driver? Does it have a horn / tweeter? Valve pre, SS power?
  6. I'm playing a couple of parties and weddings over the next few weeks and playing such songs like and having done these sorts of gigs for like 20 years, you end up playing what people expect to hear and what 'works'..... ultimately, they're paying the bills, so 'artistic integrity' doesn't really count for much........ Voulez Vous Cry to me Love Train I'm still standing Call me Al Smooth The Night Dance the Night Away Oh what a night One way or another Le Freak I'm a believer Signed sealed delivered Superstition Uptown Funk Dancing on the ceiling SOF etc etc Then a pub gig might feature some of those, but more likely would play stuff we might want to (maybe self indulgently) play stuff from the likes of the below list, but then the pub gig pays bugger all in comparison...... Hendrix Free Cream Creedence Doors Freddie King Beatles Fleetwood Mac The Band Wilco etc etc
  7. what gigs are you looking to play? Weddings / parties etc - I would suggest potentially a different set of songs from those you might hear at a pub gig.... wedding /parties - you typically need to play stuff people might want or expect to hear at such an event, which might not necessarily what you'd want to play and what you might 'get away with' at a pub gig etc........
  8. my 2002 EB MM Stingray 3 band EQ with RW board and in Red - 21st birthday gift off the 'rents...... still got it although it doesn't get used much at all. I don't think its been used live since about 2015 and that was a musical theatre gig...... I used it almost exclusively until around 2009 when I moved over to passive Jazz basses.......
  9. fit. wish I needed it. GLWS
  10. being involved as a bass (tuba) player with a championship section brass and, depping regularly for orchestras and wind bands, they usually / typically (IME) still cover travel expenses. Regardless, good luck with finding someone.
  11. FML. I have no need for this, yet want it. Doh. GLWTS.
  12. Nothing specific...... typically I'd play all across the bass to ensure the EQ is set right for the room and correct volume - typically it'd be bits of scales / arpeggios etc, hit the 'dirty' switch to make sure the OD is set ok and EQ'd ok also etc. That's usually me done except for soundcheck - if we're doing drum / bass soundcheck then we might chuck in some of Donny Hathaway's 'The Ghetto', or maybe 'I'm a mover' by Free, or even 'Canned Heat' by Jamiroquoi - for full band s/check it would likely be something like 'The Weight' by the Band that has all vocals, plus guitars and keys also. I'll warm up backstage.
  13. lovely looker........... not the right time for me, otherwise I'd be v interested
  14. Broke my foot literally leaving the house to go to a gig….. couldn’t get a shoe on as it was so swollen so had a few socks on. didn't carry or set up any gear. took loads of painkillers (zapain and nurofen), still in agony. managed to play the 2.5hrs seated. went to hospital, got X-rays which confirmed foot was broken. Spent the next 5 weeks in plaster up to my knee.
  15. Trusted friend - depending upon the specific circumstances of the gig - maybe. Someone I sort of know - nope..... Someone I've never met - nah.....no chance mate......
  16. a pal of mine is the Alarm's FOH eng on this current tour - I'll ask what the score is re bass and backing tracks..........
  17. I'm the opposite end to Cardiff and It's easier and faster for me to get a train to London (196 ish miles) than it is to the Capital city of Wales (135 miles)! Mid Wales - Newtown?
  18. I remember getting absolutely smashed with them in around 2003/2004 at the Welsh Music awards at he Coal Exchange in Cardiff as we were on the same table - those free Jack Daniels cocktails had a lot to answer for........ woke up at 9am in my hotel room, flat out on my back with a full roast beef baguette, crisps and salad on a plate atop my chest - I'd ordered food from room service, then fallen asleep before I could eat it!!
  19. Brilliant and miss mine, however I have absolutely no need for one right now!! GLWTS.
  20. I hate them as they're weighted typically for simple compressed music and at an SPL level way below that of a simple unamplifed drum for example, then any form of dynamic live 'input' to the meter mic trips them. I dislike them and try to avoid them, but have played many gigs with them and managed to keep under the ones set a realistic levels. Some are set so low that audience applause trips them - the band cannot be held liable for that! I have on a few occasions managed to strike a deal with venues where we have unwittingly taken a booking not knowing there's a meter..... I agree that we'll plug some LED lights into the meter circuit, that way, we know if we're 'too loud' by the lights switching off, but won't risk buggering valve amps etc. Then run a couple of long extension leads from circuits not connected to the meter circuit. The 'mid week daytime soundcheck' sounds like a flipping shambles and I'd rather bin the booking off than do that - that's unreasonable. Do they get outsider caterers in the week before to cook them a meal to make sure they can use an oven??!!!
  21. cheers all...... had a good think over the weekend. I'm going to give it a month, see if anything changes, then if not you MAY see a Limelight 'Pino style' P bass and a 1973 Fender Jazz for sale.........
  22. Hey guys, so, it's been a crazy couple of years as we all know and some of us have fared better than others..... the world has changed and priorities have and continue to do so..... I'm a bandless bassist, but not really wanting to join a band right now due to other commitments. I sold my gigging Aguilar rig just before covid as it was wasted not being used and bought a decent combo for not much money which is perfect for any gigs which may come in. I'm now considering properly 'thinning the herd' of basses - I only have 4 mind. They're sat in my office in cases and haven't seen the light of day in months. I have minimal motivation to play them (mainly as I'm just really busy - started my own company last year amongst other things, so that needs my time). I'm mainly just doing the odd bit of depping now then then, but not playing regularly at all and can't see that changing anytime soon..... I'm thinking of moving at least a couple of basses on (for space and to get a bit of cash in as they're now not earning me money gigging), but unsure if it's the right thing to do...... I have a 2002 Musicman Stingray 3 band - had it off my folks for my 21st so that's a keeper.... 2014 Limelight 'Pino Palledino' style Precision - great bass, but would likely let go as it doesn't really hold any sentimental value and I can always get Mark to make another if I ever wanted one. then comes the conundrum - which one of these would I possibly look to sell with the Limelight?! 2002 MIJ 62 RI Black Jazz bass, now with US pickups etc - my absolute favourite bass to play (and look at) - I don't think I'd ever find another as good and with such a perfect neck.... not a massive amount of money in it either.......it's a beaut. OR 1973 Fender Jazz - 'burst, RW board, block and bound. In amazing condition for it's age and I'd never find one is this condition - worth quite a bit I imagine - would I regret selling it?!! Then also, I have kids - what if they want to take up bass as they get older, so do I just sit on it for a bit?!! Agghhh! What to do!!!!
