1. Do you want active or passive. The MIA Dluxe Jazz V is a v different beast to the standard - more frets, smaller body, active EQ, etc...
2.
A good time was had by all !! Some lovely basses to noodle on, and a thoroughly nice bunch of blokes .... smelled a bit ,but that mighta been the room. lol Highlight for me was probably that cute little cutlass of CK's ..... I've just got that sound stuck in my head now . Looking forward to the next one. Many thanks Dave!! Nick.
I think the technical term is rehearsal room funk.
3. Thank you to Dave for organising such a fun day. I had to leave around 1:30 as I'd promised to take my son swimming. We've a new baby in the house and he's feeling a bit neglected Highlights for me were 1) meeting such a nice bunch of people 2) Kiwi's Celinder 3) OBBM's very nice sounding Epifani head and gorgeous Daryl Jones 5 (although it could do with one more fret ) Also, having the chance to A/B my main jazz (the red one) againsta load of other guitars highlighted a few tone shortcomings. As soon asI got home after taking my son out, I raised the pickups and adjusted the preamp gain and it sounds a whole lot better.
4.
Looks like I'm not going to make it tomorrow so you're gonna have to manage without me, my Flea and Carol, my new 73 Precision! Apologies guys, I hope you all have a great day Chris
Smilie or Vorderman?
5. Can I just chip in and say this is a v. good price for what is essentially a new piece of kit. I paid £135 to get my JZ3D (deluxe) into the country and the JZ3 only lists at $10 less in the first place. It's also a rather spiffing sounding preamp.
6.
Unfortunately I probably can't make it...... and not sure I could choose what to bring if I did?!? Where are you based then? Gary
I'm in Chessington.
7. I'll be along quite early - probably very soon after 10am - and I'll be bringing my 2 Fenders and my Tech rig. I will have to leave around 2pm.
8. Blimey, a veritable cornucopia of quality bass gear just round the corner from me. Are you heading to the bash on Saturday?
9. What line up do you have? What about the theme tune to Starsky and Hutch by James Taylor Quartet.
10. Features: 8 There are two flavours of J3ZD available 1) Volume, Z-Mode switch, Mid/Balance stack, Treble/Bass stack, LED meter, passive style tone or 2) Volume, Z-Mode switch, Volume, Treble/Bass stack, LED meter, passive style tone I opted for the 3 band EQ model with blend. The 2 x vol, 2 band EQ model is shown below. Naturally, as this preamp is designed to fit onto the control plate of a Jazz style bass, you are limited to 4 pots and a couple of switches. John East manages to cram 3 concentric pots onto the J-Retro deluxe, which gives you a mid frequency control on the third pot. However, the Audere has the three way Z-mode impedance control, which gives you extra options. Furthermore, having the pickup blend on the outer ring of the 2nd pot is a little fiddly. Sound: 9 At home I never use an amp - just my Korg Pandora, a pair of Beyer Dynamic DT150s and a short Monster bass cable. I've used the same setting on the Pandora for years, so plugging my bass in post upgrade was a shock. The flat sound of the preamp is lovely and balanced. The 3 band EQ is subtle. I'm used to the somewhat extreme EQ on the Fender preamp, which is kind of all or nothing - speaker flapping bass, horn frying treble and a very powerful mid that really affects the output level on the bass. On the Audere, the 3 bands have a much more pronounced effect when boosted in isolation. This makes the EQ much more useable. If I'm honest, I just used the stock preamp on the Fender to beef up the sound because I felt the flat sound was a tad weedy. Boosting the bass yields a lovely thick tone - not at all boomy, but really meaty and dark Boosting the treble gives you that Marcus Miller slap tone- bright and cutting but not brittle or painful Boosting the mids produces you a nice bark- much like a qualty passive bass, but does't push the output of the bass in the way that the stock preamp did, so you can accentuate that lovely jazz bass bridge pickup honk without suddenly drowning out your bandmates. The Z-mode impedance selector is very powerful. The effect of Low Z mode is dependant upon the output from the pickups, so there are two controls on the circuit board to allow you to tweak the input gain. The frequency peak in high Z mode is adjusted by fitting different value capacitors to the circuit board. Crucially, different value capacitors can be used for each pickup. The passive style tone control is a lovely addition and sounds much more balaced and musical than simply cutting the treble EQ. The blend control is buffered, but there is still a noticeable drop in volume when both pickups are on. This is much more pronounced in low Z-mode. Construction: 9 The first thing I noticed when unpacking the preamp is how substantial it feels. The components are top quality and the electronics are top notch. Compared to the sloppy wiring of the stock Fender preamp, the J3ZD is a thing of beauty Fitting the J3ZD was a cinch. The only tools you need are are a phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers, wire strippers and some matches. The preamp comes with jack and battery clip pre-wired. They also throw in a couple of crimps and some heat shrink tubing. All that needs connecting are the pickup wires and bridge ground connector. Now here's the good bit. On a Fender deluxe jazz (mexican or US) it's possible to extract the jack, battery clip and preamp in one piece. I simply needed to cut and strip the pickup and bridge ground wires, screw the pickup wires in the preamp board, crimp the bridge connector wires together with pliers, apply tubing and shrink with matches and I was good to go. It took 5 minutes. The battery indicator is a nice touch. Plug in a cable and you get a sequence of lights that tells you how much juice is left in the battery. Unfortunately, a high pitched noise accompanies the sequence, so have your amp off or on standby when you plug in (which I hope you do any way) and wait until the light goes out before flicking the switch. Reliability/Durability: 10 I can't comment, but I would assume the unit is very reliable based on construction Customer Support: 10 I bought the Audere J3ZD as an upgrade to the stock preamp in my 2001 Fender US Deluxe Five String. I paid £104 for the preamp, incudling priority USPS shipping. I had to pay another £30.63 in customs charges and admin. However, £135 isn't a bad price. I ordered on a Friday morning and Parcelforce dropped it off exactly a week later. Overall Rating: 9 I've only had this preamp in my bass since Friday evening and was a little unsure at first, but within an hour of installing I was sold. Extra credit has to go to Audere for making installing such a breeze. If I go for a Audere preamp for my other US Deluxe Jazz, I may well go for a 2 vol,2 band EQ model. I'll miss the mid EQ, but I'll appreciate the better control over individual pickup volumes.
11.
Since my holiday plans are now on hold due to my boy breaking his leg, I'm now a definite maybe / Anything in my sig you want me to bring, or shall I just bring a cowbell? I live in Chertsey and have a big car, so if you need a lift for you and your rig PM me. I don't mind travelling a few miles off route to pick you up. Hamster
Could you bring your Lakland? It looks v. nice.
12. A mate of mine walked into Soundcontrol Oxford Street and handed over £575 for an export model Aerodyne. It was one of those scenarios where had he asked first I'd have told him where to go to pick up a, IMHO, more attractive non-export model for around £100 less.
13. Dump it on Parkway or nearby - you can park there after 6:30. I usually snake round through Hlland Park and Regents Park to avoid the congestion charge, but as you're coming in from low country that shouldn;t be a problem.
14. This was the lesser of the two evils. I'll have the amp repair money next month. I'm still reeling from the thought of handing over £200 to fix an amp that cost me £300 a year ago.
15. too right One of these plugged into one fo these sitting on top of one of these

17. It's cleared customs, so here's hoping I don;t have any duty to pay. I'm really looking forward to popping this in my bass.
18. I'm waiting for an Audere J3ZD preamp. It's in the UK - the USPS tracking site says it's being processed by customs. Thing is, it's been there a couple of days now. What's the procedure for contacting them and chasing it up?

20.
Should have just said Gothenburg......It was my second guess,At The Gates hang on 95...was Dissection with them? Was that the Devils Chruch gig..£2.50 to see them in the Redeye or wherever Mike had his setup? My mates got a great handheld vid of that lineup in Bradford. What were your lot called?
Good thing I didn't say Gothenburg - For some reason I thought they were from Stockholm. No, it was their first UK headline tour with Seance and Ancient Rites. They got as far as Manchester before the incident with the tour manager. We played the Dissection show too - that was Mike's last ever show at the Dublin Castle. He put on a 4 band, maybe even 5 band bill and and didn't manage the times properly. Ancient Rites played too long Dissection went on at around 10:20 and the landlady called time after 10 minutes. Mike ended up wrestling with her in front of the stage. In typical Mike style he went on record to say that it was our fault - the openers. Is he still alive? I used to be in a band called Dark Heresy.
21.
Was that Dismember????
No. I'll give you a couple of clues clues instead - more fun that way Three words 1st album released on Peaceville.
22. My tale is more a weekend of fun and games that I experienced when I was in my first band years ago (1995 I think) A name Swedish Death band was touring the OK and we'd been booked to open for their final show - London on a Sunday night. Wicked! I got a phone call from the London promotr on Friday mornign to say that the tour manager alleged he'd been mugged in Manchester and that he was carrying all of the cash needed for the tour, including payment for the coach company. Very fishy. Upon hearing of this, the coach company promptly announced they were returning to Sweden. If the headline and main support (also Swedish) wanted to get home with their gear they would have to cut short the tour, else the company would leave them in the UK. The 2nd support band werer from Belgium and decided that they'd be better off trying to get home from England. The promoter asked if we'd be willing to play the remaining dates of the tour so that the 2nd support could have a go at flogging some merchandise and at least making a few quid. The only problem is that they had no transport. We turn up at the first gig in Tunbridge Wells to find that there's no way the 2nd support can play. So, a 5 band bill featuring 3 name bands is suddenly reduced to a two band bill featuring a couple of demo bands. There was a queue of nearly 200 people outside and the venue aren't exactly publicising the billing. I had to walk the queue constantly to explain the situation. Thankfully the crowd are understanding and most demand a decent amount off the door price too. Next nigt's gig is in Milton Keynes. We load into our band transport -a Bedford rascal - and head on up to the gig. This time the Belgian band are playig but they have no transport whatsoever. WE do the gig and then the promoter plays his trump card-we need to get the Belgian band back to London. We drove down the M1 with 8 people and our backline wedged into the back of a 1.3 litre Bedford Rascal! And so went the weekend. We finally got roped into driving the band back to Dover so they could get the ferry back. They ended up leaving their backline with some strange witch they'd met in Canterbury and arranged for one of them to go backand get it later. Most of my gigs nowadays are more straightforward
23. I have a full set of 14" steel rims suitable for a Ford, Peugeot, Citroen. Thy're four stud 108mm PCD and in good condition. I also have a set of four Peugeot hubcabs from a 306 DTurbo. These would make good spares - stick snow tyres on them and keep them in the garage or a good upgrade for the 13"rims on a 106. Collection only from Chessington, Surrey
24. I have just ordered a J3ZD for my US Deluxe V. A snip at £104 inc priority express USPS shipping. It's sure to be a major improvement on the stock Fender preamp. Can't wait.
25.
Hi- I've taken it out of the bass it was in so can't get you any sound clips I'm afraid- there are some on the website linked in my first post though- I've not played a bass with a j-retro- the audere is pretty much transparent though, set flat the mid z mode is fairly similar to the passive tone. low z mode is earth shaking- the eq is very very usable
Sorry to hijack, but a quick question. Did you pay using your paypal account or credit card through paypal? I ask, because I could get a Deluxe preamp for a great price, but I've heard horror stories about the paypal exchange rate.
