1. My wife knows the difference between a bass and a guitar...however. I have a Sunburst Fender Jazzmaster - the wife calls it "The Brown Guitar". I also have an acoustic - the wife calls this "The Wooden Guitar". I have pointed out many times that they're both made of wood.
 2. Pregnant upper horn and odd late 70's headstock? No, I wouldn't pay anymore than 750.
 3. Nah, I think it's real. Think it's priced low to shift quickly. I wouldn't be paying much more than 750 for anything from that period anyway.
 4. I like the idea of it but not the pickguard or the price.
 5. Ray Shulman - Gentle Giant.
 6.
At times it's very Chris Squire sounding and I'm pretty sure he was also using a Ricky during this period.
The comparison isn't surprising - there are plenty of photos on the net of Rutherford with a Fireglo RM1999 at this time - same model as CS's. If you tap Watcher of the Skies into youtube you should locate a TV studio performance against a white background - he's using it on that.
 7.
thats what i thought at first too edit: there seems to be a diff of opinion on google with gummed coming out tops.
It probably won because it sounds absolutely filthy in that context. Did someone mention Keanu? I saw his band (think they were called Dogstar?) at T in the Park once. Post Bill and Ted, Pre-Matrix. They were gash.
 8.
I think this question is asked almost every week......
...and it was me that asked it last week. http://basschat.co.u...84#entry1368484 I ended up buying a 5 string set, widening the nut slots a tad and using the BEAD tuned down to CFA#D# for a QOTSA tune. Tension was a little more so tweaked the truss rod clockwise a tad. Tried it at a gig on Saturday night and it worked a treat. Very punchy, no flappiness. I should add though that this is a backup bass that I only use for those type of tunes. Everything else I do is on my main bass in bog standard 45-105's, so if you made a permanent move to BEAD you may well end up feeling the same as Cameron did. I suppose its dependent on how much time you spend on the skinniest string.
 9.
Well, the court didn't think it was an accident.
Possibly not, but that was the core of his defence wasn't it? I can't remember if it was murder or manslaughter they put him away for. Wikipedia is but a few clicks away but I cannot be arsed typing his name to find out. Do let us know though.
 10.
#7 Carry spares for the guitarist & vocalist (wtf? no really) #8 Dont bin all the mids in your sound!
so, so true.
 11.
For me it was William Potter from Cud.
Cud! my best mate adored Cud. Crazee band they were. Their cover of Tull's "Living in the Past" always made me smile. Should also add I also always associate StingRays with Ned's Atomic Dustbin - the low parts tackled by a Ray, the high parts by a Rick. The ultimate bass players band in a way.
 12. Funny, I've only ever associated Rays with Steve Querault from Ride...
 13.
another body i'm not going to be doing anything with anytime soon! its solid wood, lightweight so prob alder? comes with white scratchplate. good nick, few scuffs and a small dent on the back (seen in pic) £40 posted
Allo, what's the provenance (big word for this time of day I know) Is a Squier/Allparts/Warmoth/Columbus type thing?
 14.
Or just switching to a 5 stringer to save all the messing about
I actually had an OLP StingRay5 up until about 2 years ago, but got rid of it to help fund the Jazz bass. A bit of hindsight might have been handy!
 15. Cheers for the responses guys. Keep 'em coming if anyone else wants to chip in their 10p's worth. Greek - Had a look at the Overwaters site and was intrigued - regular sets are about 17quid. Which is pretty reasonable. Did the guy say how much they roughly charged for custom sets? Also looked at the DDT's but was a bit put off by the price though. Think I'm leaning toward the funky penguin's train of logic as a 5 string pack would give you the same sort of thing for a tenner cheaper if it was Slinkys for example.
 16.
Daddario do a 55-115/110 set, still pushing it with C, but that comes from someone that uses those in standard.
Cheers. Yeah, I've had a look about and they seem about as thick as you get in four string sets. I presume I'm looking at five string sets and throwing away the top string then?
 17. Right, the covers band I play in are currently sticking "No-one Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age at the end of the set. We play it ala the original song and up to now I have been dropping my bass down to C,F,A#,D#. My Jazz is strung with 45-105's and it doesn't much like the drastic neck tension change. It also sounds pretty flappy too to be honest, so I'm thinking of other options. I have a Precision (one in the avatar actually) sitting about doing nothing in my flat currently strung with Roto Swing Bass 30-90's for slappy stuff. The idea is to re-string it with much heavier strings and leave it in the C tuning all the time and just switch basses when the time comes at gigs. Would the neck tension with the thicker strings dropped down be approximately the same with what I have on the bass now? I have zero experience of heavier sets (i.e. anything over 105's) and would welcome any advice on choice of string gauge. I'd thought about slinging 110's on but would this still be a tad light? Of course the other option is to drop the song from the set, but it always gets a great reaction so probably not then.
 18.
If I can just throw a slight tangent into this thread. I have found a brilliant extremely well observed both in lyrical style and sonic useage . Its absolutely spot on! (audio only, unfortunately)
Came as a flexi-disc (remember them?) free with an issue of Select magazine toward the end of 1992 I think. Think mine's in the loft at my folks house. I always thought the lyric was "My Mother Gummed My Weapon".
 19.
Doesn't he have a murder conviction as well? Or am I confusing him with someone else?
That'd be Leslie Grantham who accidentally shot a taxi driver dead whilst trying to rob him when he was stationed in Germany. Late 60's/early 70's I think it was.
 20. Stunning. If only I had some cash.
 21. IIRC Joyce was a Peavey man during The Smiths.
 22. Yeah, 1100-1200 is about right for an '81 in this condition, even from a dealer. They're not quite as sought after as the 60's/early 70's ones (no horseshoe/toaster, different headstock/top horn shape) so don't hold value quite as well, but they're still cracking basses in their own right.
 23.
Not a fan of ash trays on P's. On a side note would adding an ash tray without foam change the sound at all?
Nah, it doesn't. I had both covers on my P (see avatar) and there was no detectable change. Had them on for a couple of years and then took off the ashtray first as I seemed to be developing a plectrum style that was heavy on palm muting and then the pickup cover came off shortly after because it got in the way when I started playing slap.
 24. Is it green or black? I can't tell. Might need to get myself down to an opticians.
