But then jazz usually lacks the flair and passion of great fusion...
As Bilbo says what have you been listening to. If you listen to the clip of Wynton Marsallis and Frank Vignola playing Sweet Georgia Brown on youtube I don't think you could really apply that statement to Jazz. Some might say you run the risk of becoming a musical snob with statements like that. Every music has its good points and bad. There is good and bad jazz as there is good and bad fusion, as there is good and bad rock, as there is... The advantage we have these days is the internet to let us hear all that good and bad music. We can then make up our minds before we buy the stuff. Keep an open mind and you'll find the good stuff in any genre.
Any excuse to show my fretless off...
Oh yes! I've always loved that bass. Love to have a go but too far away.

...and it's almost as if the names of some genre, like jazz, are hijacked, in a sense, to gain some credibility. I often hear the name jazz banded around in some pop styles and I'm hard pushed to hear any jazz in it at all.
The term 'fusion' tends to send a shiver up my back.
That's exactly the love/hate thing being mentioned. I get the same feeling when I see someone with their thumb up ready to slap a bass. Perhaps this thread will open some players' minds to some of the good stuff around.

Now this really does it for me and an all star lineup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCsbQVXRPYA&list=UUBKLsiuzzG9pIR1YKH-Zpfg&index=18&feature=plcp

Has been slow with me too but seems OK now. Maybe the drills are having a weekend off. Don't ask me I'm only a bass player. Seems you need to know more for this forum now.
Has this thread had a refin?
No, it's been reliced.
Why? Is there another coming along?
Don't worry, it's just a Phase or a Chorus of people with the same opinion. Sorry. Hat and coat in hand.

I used to dep with a band a few times a year with fretted but they don't seem to want me any more. Sacked! Huh! So that leaves me exclusively fretless. I don't think fretted would fit too well in the jazz and folk I'm in. So no, no problems here. Prefer the sound anyway. I once took a fretted along to jazz band and the leader commented there was more freedom in the sound of the fretless. Fine by me.
This is just that thread with a lot of echo on it.
Technically I think that should be delay.

Yes it was discussed quite recently and I would say the same as I said then. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/187066-a-small-rant/page__fromsearch__1

There are a number of Jazz Fusion compilations on youtube and one threw up this with some nice fretless on it.
What are you on?
Reality!

Looking good so far. Certainly unique.
I detest most of it...
It's always going to be love or hate with fusion. It encompasses so many musical approaches, as the name suggests. Funk, world rock, jazz, Indian and loads of others. But then I suppose that's the same with most types of music.

Big Holdsworth fan too. My first taste of this stuff was in 1979. McCormack's Music (RIP) hosted a Fender roadshow. The band included Felix Krish on bass and Allan Murphy on guitar. Still remember it to this day and that sound has stuck with me.

I like the sound of the Ranjit Barot stuff. Good cross of rock, jazz and Indian flavours. Keep them coming.

As an addendum to Bilbo's thread GOD.....I LOVE JAZZ. Not every jazz fan is going to be a fusion fan so maybe it needs its own thread. You decide. I know there are a few fans of the genre on here so what are your fave tracks/bands. I'm on a big Gary Willis kick at the moment so here's a Tribal Tech 'tune' to start off.
Just an opinion, but I think a ramp is a bit of a pointless gimmick. Your technique should be good enough to make a ramp superfluous, and you should be able to play hard or soft without hooking your fingers under the strings anyway.
Quite frankly it's this kind of attitude that holds up a player's development. When it comes to technique there are no shoulds or shouldn'ts. Did Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke stay playing root notes because that's what a bass should do. No! They thought outside the box and moved bass playing on by miles in a very short time. I don't think anyone can argue that Gary Willis and Matt Garrison are among the finest bass players of the moment. Both use ramps. That is what they choose to use as it suits their playing style. Not everyone needs or wants a ramp. They will always be used by only a minority. Don't get stuck in dogma. That just holds up development.
-
As far as I know Gary Willis was one of the first to use a ramp (I'm sure someone will correct me on that one). They do stop you getting your fingers too far under the string if you use the four finger picking technique. Have a look at Gary Willis' playing on youtube. There are one or two clips of him explaining his use of the ramp. I've just started working with four finger picking and the ramp is pretty well integral in that style, as the end of the neck is integral in slapping. If you are someone who likes to dig in on your playing then it is not for you. I like a more subtle approach to that so I'm thinking of having one bass fitted with one.

Marcin bought a P pickup from me. Great to deal with and no problems whatsoever. Thanks Marcin.
He did? I thought it was thumb and index finger.
Of course it was...with a pick in between them

And when one of those "out of funds" posts is added to your thread what happens? Your thread goes back to the top of the list (and Luke beat me to it). Free bump that might be within the 36 hour rule. Don't put them down, people are looking at your sale thread.
