New Band... is it a keeper or time to walk?
BassBus replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
All that Dad said. Playing in a band is a skill like any other. If you haven't done it before it might take you a while to really latch on to it. Like anything else, practice, practice and more practice. It sounds like you are beginning to pick up on things already though. Not every band you try put with will suit you. I usually know within three sessions if I will stick with a band. The jazz band I played with for 13 years I knew within three tunes never mind sessions. -
His mistake was trying the guitar. He should have tried the bass. After all it is easier to play and you only play one note at a time.
Perhaps it's because on most modern recordings, it's been reduced to a dull, lifeless thump with no definition.
Ah, a P bass with flats on. Scuse me while I just duck below this wall.

For those whose money:sense ratio is approaching infinity
BassBus replied to tauzero's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
When Tracey Emen once had it put to her that anyone could have made the 'unmade bed', her reply was "but I did". -
A 'name' headstock decal only really matters to people who judge your playing by sight, not sound.
Not sure I really agree with this. I play my £250 Cort bass a lot and love it but when I go back to one of my customs I feel a big difference. They all have their place. For me nothing beats the neck profile of my Status S2. Without doubt the quality of the player is what counts but a good setup contributes a great deal to. There aren't too many bad basses around these days.

Just woken up to Snarky Puppy. Damn fine outfit. Lots of them. Great to hear that kind of music just as instrumental. Much better without singing.

Ibanez, Cort and ESP LTD are all good makes and come in at good prices. All mostly made in the same factory too. There's a nice Cort B4 on ebay at the moment. Is it a six string you want?

Now look here pussy cat! Pure dead brilliant! That song was written for him.
If Glenn Worf ever throws the towel in, I imagine I'll be as high as 9357th in line to replace him. But, if it happens again for a third time I might get cocky. Ha ha.
This brings to mind the story of the D'Ascoin family in Kind Hearts and Coronets :\ -
Solutions to annoying the neighbours.. :-s
BassBus replied to ZenBasses's topic in General Discussion
I always practice through an effects processor, Zoom B2.1u. A great tone of your choice. Might be better to get an FX processor with an aux input to give you the option of playing along to your fav. music. I was just talking with my neighbour yesterday about this subject and he never hears me so job done. -
The best looking J type basses on the market, IMHO of course. And yours is particularly pretty.

Trouble is technology never ends.

Thanks for this Garry. Even more tempting goodies for my iPad.
I completely agree, if you're trying to get a more upright kinda sound, you can do a lot with 2 mag pickups and clever use of the filter preamp on an ACG, never mind string choice.
That's true but the piezo pickups on my Finn sound fantastic with TI Jazz flats. Certainly not a DB sound but a really nice electric right tone.

Such wise words. If I had known this when I was younger perhaps I wouldn't have to visit the osteopath every three months. This needs to be pinned.

Status S2 Classic :::Another price drop:::SOLD

Woohoo! A vote! Thanks to whoever. Been fun. Lots of good stuff.

It sounds quite simple to me, it is time for you to move on from your current band. Give them notice but make it a fixed time not 'until they get a replacement'. That focuses their minds to find a replacement. There sometimes comes a time when it is just time to move on.
Lowdown got my vote. It was perfect for the picture and Iiked it a lot also. However it wasn't my favourite. My favourite was Bilbos piece but I couldn't connect it with the picture so for that reason he came a very close second. Third for me was bass bus which I thought was awesome but the weird keyboard in the middle threw the mood of the tune out of its groove, but an excellent piece otherwise. All entries were very high again this month so well done to all.
Thanks for the comments 'the boy'. Constructive criticism Like that I can take. It's always interesting to read what everyones inspiration was for their piece. I took it as the conversation between Herod and Salome. First part is Herod falling for Salome's beauty and dancing. Second is Salome asking for J the B's head in her somewhat manipulative and psychopathic manner. So that had to be a little disonant. And the final part is Herod realising what he has done. I left the bum notes in as the moment the deed was done. Lowdown got my vote too.
The whole wood changing thing is nice in theory.... but the second bass the OP uses as an example is a status.... not much wood there
No, there isn't much wood in my Status except the five different pieces that were stuck together to make the body. It' a bolt-on as well so no neck through.

Radius block-do I need one?!
BassBus replied to the hand of john curley's topic in Repairs and Technical
If you want an even radius then yes a radius block is essential. You can get them quite cheaply on ebay. If I remember correctly I think I got one from Portugal for a tenner delivered. Get hold of a set of radius gauges too so you can check the exact radius, ebay too. -
Interesting it happens to more than just wood. My double bass certainly improved with age. Even during any one session. It might start out with an OK tone but within half an hour that tone had improved again, much greater depth to it.
-
I'm sure there is an amount of getting used to it but that doesn't explain my experience with my ACG. That I managed to get a fine tone from within days. That was four years old when I bought it earlier this year. I was once told of a violin maker who, having finished an instrument, placed it on one of his hifi speakers for a few days. He felt that "played" the instrument in. There must be an element of that with solid bodies as well.
