dont know about the VM range as my squierJ is an affinity and for 150 notes the build quality is vgood - i only bought it on a whim as my original intention to use the neck for my own project build but the squier is defnitely staying in one piece now
edit - a bass playist friend of mine has a VM squier P which is modded with wilkinson pickup which i have gigged - the wilkinson (or any other upgrade for that matter) is definitely worth doing - the only reason he got it back was because he had my TRB which he was setting up

Good "Standard" Jazz electric bass players
steve-bbb replied to jackotheclown's topic in General Discussion
The key word in the last few posts for me,has been timbre. Like I said earlier,it's not that you can't swing on the electric bass...it's more that because of the physical properties of the Double Bass, the notes have a completely different envelope to them than the electric bass and people often mistake this for 'swing'.
im with doddy on this one - my take on swing is that while its nice to have the timbre/envelope of an upright/fretless (or even an ahbory or U) the main essence of swing is surely timing? you can have a great tone like any of the best swing players but if your timing isnt there then ... 'it dont mean a thing!' -

How did that happen - "I've got blisters on my fingers "
steve-bbb replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
I've got good callouses, but I have been practising sitar lines on my acoustic guitar for some forthcoming gigs, and my fretting hand fingertips started hurting after ten minutes, even two days later they are still very tender. They will be hard as hammers in a week. I can deal with the pain, I have learned to enjoy it up to a point.
do you find the skinny strings on guitars cause more probs than bass strings though? - bass strings is fine with me but as soon as i start noodling around on my old 6string acoustic it does start to take its toll in very little time at all -
+1. I think that generally, blisters are caused by "digging in" too much.
id agree with that - i find that old age is slowly refining my technique to use optimum(minimum) left hand pressure although right (plucking) hand i would say im slightly more heavy handed than the average player but still doesnt cause me any problems luckily -

scanning this thread i never realised the blister thing was such a widespread issue! luckily never had blisters regardless of playing/practice frequency -
@steve-bbbThey also make a recessed (in the body) version (as fitted to my Skjold) which takes the same strap fitting & the strap fits right up close to the woodwork.
now that soulnds more like it i used to have the buttonless ones that screw the strap in with a washer and the strap has a plastic buckle/cliplock sort of thing - much preferred them but cant seem to find any at he moment

gone already!!!!! i wish my colorsoud tonebender would go this quick

pair of jim dunlop strap lok (gold) found them after forgetting id got them- and then remembered them - and then decided against free to a good home for the price of a stamp or two

ta new thread time in the giveaway forum
-
have just stumbled across a pair of jim dunlop strap lock fittings which id forgotten i had! anybdy use them and any feedback? my concern with just looking at them is that the whole assembly appears quite long and as there will be that increased distanced fromthe body to the strap itself that you might get a bit more of a turning force acting against the whole thing and maybe tugging at the screw thread inside the wood?? ta
[sub]If you want to start slow and build up your speed, but really hate metronomes, there's another solution. I think there's a Tascam device which will slow down the tempo of a CD, but not the pitch. You can then build up the tempo as you feel comfortable. I read an interview with Bowie bassplayer Gail Ann Dorsey, who said she used one of these when learning to play and sing simultaneously on 'Under Pressure'. [/sub]
i know that windows media players does this with mp3's as ive used it forexactly this - probably other players too
This is just something I don't get about music tuition in colleges - I think, one is supposed to be a good musician, rather than essayist, and spend most of the time on practice. I bet it this sh*t must be driving you crazy, Jake. Take care, L
things dont change - i was at art college in mid 80s - we were taught art and design - but there was still the one hour a week of exactly this sort of thing as well
your own 'personal' creativity and authenticity is based upon a long sequence of ideas being absorbed, modified and re-used. all ideas are based on earlier ideas, so the idea that there is a inviolate 'authenticity' to any idea is, to a large extent, a myth.
indeed - there are no original ideas just recycling of all the old ones over and over again right up until the point of realisation when the cycle breaks
-
but if your personality/spirit/character is created from an assembly of ideas and concepts that have already been 'processed' by others, what does that mean for authenticity ?
it means that unless you appreciate the 'oneness' of everything you are bounding/limiting yourself by your own subjective experience to be beholden to your own personal creativity and authenticity ommmmm
As a newbie only been playing a short while I thought I would push the boat out a little (at least for me anyway ) & try & learn Norman Wot-Roy's classic bassline to "Hit me with your rythem stick" Ian Dury & The Blockheads. Iv allways wanted to have a crack at this. I must confess I have used utube & tab to work it out (chastisement accepted ) & I think Iv got the main parts learnt, I think its mainly minor pentatonic scales, & its taken me a couple of days . The problem is playing it at the right speed, @ 105 bpm plus the rythem, I think its a hard bassline to master. Would you agree, or should I be getting this? I'v tried playing along to the song but the intro starts so fast my fingures (left & right) are in knots by the end of the second bar. Just wonderd what is the best way to overcome this Iv tried playing to a metronome at a slower speed, I do find it quite hard to listen to the metronomes anoying click & playing, listening to the song gives me more clues as to whare Im suposed to be if this make sense,is this the right approach? Its not impossible is it? Any sugestions.
nothing wrong with youtube as a learning tool- i would recommend you check out marloweDK he has a tutorial channel and a playalong channel which are both very good and there are also some lovely basschatters who have similar channels - apologies their names escape me at present but im sure someone will update edit - was trying to think earlier of JakeBrownBass
Yes that's what is worrying me tbh. It's the immediate family of the deceased (her mother, brother and sister) who've asked us to do it, and some of her friends have been in touch saying stuff like "Oh Deb would love that, you guys playing at her wake", but I'm still not convinced. As you said, people with more traditional values are gonna find it all just disrespectful.
agree with some fo the previous posts - if her close family and friends who knew her well say this is what she would have liked then it seems a bit of a no brainer to be honest if the more distant family and friends are having their traditional values upset then im sure the more astute of them will possibly have a change of heart and mind when they see all those who were close to her actually enjoyiong themselves and supporting it appropriately there is al;ways the possibility that there may be that insignificant minority who is professionally shocked but from what youve already said i think they will be seriously outnumbered hope it goes well and send them all our regards from BC
