1. From experience, all Fenders are good guitars.... (sweeping statement alert!) Nearly all Jap Fenders (with exception maybe of the P bassLyte ) are very well made and play nicley. US fenders are made from lovely wood but seem to be 'thrown together' so with a little time and patience can be awesome. Mex Fenders are pretty good but fall into 3rd place behind the other 2 for those reasons alone. QC is pretty good in all 3 bases so you would struggle to buy cr4p. But....... As to your 'is it worth it?' question. ANY article is only what you are prepared to pay for it. You can find a relatively cheap bass that is wonderful (see my Ibanez on this forum for example) to play and look at. And on the other extreme you can spend a lot of money on what is for you a lemon. Its cost is no gaurentee of quality. May I suggest that you try a Highway One jazz and see what you reckon? They should be easy to find a shop that has one or can get one for you to try. 2nd hand is obvioulsy the way to go, but if at all possible dont buy anything you havent tried, (unless you know exactly what it is !)
2. Chris, its easy to see why you are sceptical..... 3 'genuine 70's Fenders with no reserve? someone is going to make an absolute killing on these or they are hotter than a very hot thing in a microwave..... B.
3. With a bit of effort: get very close to the neck, breath on it and wipe the grunge off, with a soft clean cloth. Failing that a GOOD proprietry guitar cleaner, (PRS, Ernie ball etc) will get rid of the rest. Only use abrasives as a last resort. remember whatever you remove cannot be replaced easily!
4. Bud, I know I'm a bit of a brand tart, but the PRS polishing cloth that I have does exactly what you want. http://www.worldguitars.co.uk/ has them and the cleaner, polish and lemming oil is top kit too. ( you can buy them as a kit from thier ebay store)
5.
Maple
+1 Looks, feels, sounds better IMO..... I like maple......
6. Theres no reason you cannot use roundwounds on it but they do appear to be more corrosive on softer fretboards. Flatties are the weapon of choice for most fretless. As to your preferance of maker/ guage etc. My advice FWIW is stick with a brand/ guage you use or know and go for thier flatties to start.
7. +1 for Roqsolid...... Very hard wearing, well made kit..... B.
8. Indeed! B.
9. Si, ^ nowt except size!
10. All those pick ups, all that circuitry, god, I could play around in there for weeks and only come out for food! Shame its not 1/2 that price!
11. To actively go after the 'bad guys' would be to admit they have a problem and would require investigators that would require paying proprotionally for thier ability...... I'm not sure ebay believe that's cost effective... how on earth they expect it police itself when history has proven that there are a proportion of basically dishonest people amongst us I've no idea.
12. The physical diemensions need to be correct, ie scale length, neck pocket diemensions. However the angle the neck (bolt on obviously) has in realtion to teh body can be shimmed to help angles of strings...... Check this for a definition of shimming: http://www.pittmanguitarrepair.com/index.c...849F496817A9522
13. You should find that the Fender has a 1.625" nut width and the profiles vary, according to when its made. I also like the wider necks as I have big clunky fingers. My choice are Ibanez, PRS and Fender P.
14. That looks more dodgy than a fair full of dodgems!
15. You own a coulpe of older ones, is that a reasonable start price? It just seems a lot of money! It is however very pretty and looks pretty gen!
16. Lex, That is pure brilliance! I will make one this evening as I have a CT and I'm sure I can find an LED somewhere.... Have you tried it? Bob.
17. Stock sound shouldnt really stand in the way of your GAS. If you have that stirring in your loins that only one kind of bass can give then, get it you must. Sorting the sound out later with different pups/ electrics is almost a National Sport on here! Its neither masively expensive or difficult, and now (it appears) we have a pet custom Pup producer should be pretty darn easy! B.
18. I admire anyone that can support, and get a gig with JB.... Wonderful player. As for being young and female... should it matter? Sex sells, and as the saying goes, if you've got it flaunt it (which she clearly is) ..... I take my hat off to the young lady for getting the gig and having talent..... It would be a shame if she is judged just because of her gender and looks.... Personally not keen on the twiddly stuff, and that kinda flies in the face of stereotypical US bassist that 'stay in the pocket'! But is it a good performance?, 'Hell yeah" Could I do that?. 'Hell no'
19. Bod, my apologies. I typed it quick this am got my linear and log around my 4rse! Strictly speaking you should use agarithmic pot for the volume control and a linear one for the tone control but no-one (including Fender) seems to bother about that but it should be logarithmic/audio for the volume. My Blazer is exactly that set up! and not bad for it! 1 log and 1 Lin and wired slightly differntly but works very well and humless!! Bob.
20. 1, Fret it at the fret where you get teh buzz (think you said 8th) then whilst keepin that fretted, work up teh string from there with other hand until it stops. Should be able to work it out. 2. ^ above is correct. take off strings, release tension in t-rod, so neck is straight and use a 'straight edge'! (and unless its a brand new rule it probably wont be straight enough). you will then see daylight under some and it may rock on high ones. 3. form what you've now included I'd guess teh 8th fret is worn and its buzzing on teh 9th. you may be able to see teh wear on teh 8th....
21. Yes I'd thought of several quips, but they were all abit 'school playgroundy!' B.
22. Beats me! Someone else deleted them?
23. This might be a stupid question but, did you change the strings at the same time? You may have a rogue string! I have known several set ups that have been spoilt by old/ tired/ or unstable strings....... Plus another option is that you could have a high 8th fret or worn 7th fret that hasnt shown up before. You havent said if its when fretted at the 8th fret or open string and buzzing on the 8th..? Bob.
24. Si, If you are doing a std rewire there are two options..... 1. 2 x 250k (or 500k if you are using HOT pups) linear pots and the wiring diag is on here:- http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/schem...dard_pbass.html 2. there is a slightly different way of doing it with 1x Linear pot (as above choice) and 1x Logrithmic pot of the same value Which seems more prevelant on Jap P copies and if you choose to do it this way PM me and I'll get the wiring diag... Enjoy. Bob
25. Jeez, thats lovely...... why did you get rid of it?
