1.
I always thought Ebony was the happy medium on bass...not that I've owned one for a while now. I think people that claim there's no difference between Maple and Rosewood are in denial; Rosewood is darker sounding and Maple is brighter, but I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other.
I thought that too. I was there and was surprised to find its the other way round.
 2.
I've seen a guy iron the neck to get the fretboard off. Not for the fainthearted. Is it a through-neck or bolt on?
Through neck or bolt on is a good question. Also I would be curious about, if I can get it apart, what will I fi d and can I fix it anyway? Maybe Warwickhunt can help here. Otherwise you could ask Warwick support. Their prices won't be low. As an owner of similar basses, how did this happen? Any warnings or silly errors? Taking it as read here that you're no fool, so what you did is something we all can do.
 3.
Dear Bass Chat i'm a new user, old bass player! Used to own a Wal fretless in 80's sold it (biggest regret of my life!), now looking to get another decent fretless but my budget at present not up to £3000-3500! At present I have a Squire vintage fretless with Bad ass bridge, Its ok I guess but passive, not very inspiring, so want to treat myself to a decent bass up to £2000 (hopefully less!) Do any of you peeps know of a bass that has very fast neck with narrow string spacing 16 -16.5, lined fretless, active, I'm looking for punchy tone, like a Wal, but with decent growl, don't want muddy sounding crap, very crisp please!!? It would seem to me having done research that 5 string basses usually have narrower string spacing ANYWAY,? so that could be a solution, strung E,A,D,G,C, don;t want low B, too low for me! So I've looked at: Status - wonderful narrow fast necks, headless, lovely, pricey, graphite neck = nice punchy tone with good highs £2500! Sandberg - difficult getting any info on string spacing, and what does it sounds like? £1500 Roscoe- Looks and sounds nice expensive, not sure about spacing > £2200 Mayones - Look and sound ace, spacing? £1600 - 2000 Overwater- does do narrow strings, sounds very smooth but is it punchy enough? £2200 Musicman - as far as I see none in the UK, so can't fond out much about these. £1600 Spector - Dittp Musicman, are these any good (ca get a Euro for £1500) So my question is has anyone experience with any of the above as fretless (or otherwise)... I know there is no substitute for a Wal and may even end up getting one, but is there ANYTHING out there thats what I want (can you read my mind) I want quality, playability, light small body, fast action, narrow neck, smooth as butter with zing!!!! Any good suggestions other than above? Thanks for listening I hope you can help!!!!!
The ESP LTD B-205 SM-FL Fretless 5string Fretless has a really close spacing, nice smooth fast neck and good action. They sell for £400 too.
 4. I read an article about this in Bass Gear magazine. They put this question to about luthiers who build top end basses. These guys included those at Fedora and Sadowsky etc. Their answer was it makes no difference. What matters is the break angle and its position. What happens outside those 2 points makes no real difference at all. Players often like it as a style and se will convince themselves of a difference but these top luthiers couldn't find a benefit.
 5.
And obviously a big thank you to Mick, Lozz and Chris who organised the bash, Sibob's dad who took photos of several attendees with their gear, Tim the drummer, Andrew, Nick and Peter for their talks, Mrs Grangur* for helping with the bass test, and all the others who donated their time or possessions for the bash. * I still don't know her first name! Would love to be enlightened
Thank you too Sylvia. Mrs G is generally known as Louisa. Louisa also thoroughly enjoyed the day and will be pleased to help more behind the scenes next year; such as helping Chris with the teas. It was also great to see ordep again. We met when I bought a bass from him a while back. It was good to see the winner actually enjoying the bass, rather than eyeing up it's value for a listing in the "For Sale" section. I'm sure it's gone to a good home.
 6. Hey Dave! Yes please! I'll have this. PM on the way
 7.
That's a nice example of a thunder 1a and rich is a gent to deal with. have a bump.
Many thanks Steve. Although I've just taken this to the Herts Bass Bash.... and fallen in love with it again in the incredible sound of this in the larger room. Withdrawn!
 8.
Rich If I ever manage to dind a p bass, I'll have these off you. The search continues.
LOL, you never know. You might actually like the pups that are already in the bass! Thanks for the bump, Nige.
 9. Just got back and sorted the gear away. Phew! Many thanks to all who organised the event, to all the stars who performed and presented and all those who went and made the day what it was: Another really successful Bash. Many thanks
 10. I had a LM2 that went off when it got hot and over heated. It also had a poor connection on the Speakon socket. This turned out to be the same fault. Poor connection causes heat and caused the thermal cutout to operate.
 11.
So sorry to hear this mate. Look forward to meeting to another time.
+1 Sam. Sorry to hear about your Mum. Good luck to you and your family.
 12.
Cash preferred, but whaddya got?
Interesting comment you make about too many basses distract you from learning. I recon that's my problem too. I had a Wishbass once. They're good dun and deliver a great sound.
 13. Thanks Mark, for buying a set of strings. Mark is a good guy to deal with. All went well and it was a simple smooth transaction.
 14. Here's a Weststone Spectrum that seems to be in good condition http://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/-classic-and-rare-80-s-bass-guitar/1120724190
 15. Hi there, I'm selling a set of Seymour Duncan SPB-3 pickups. As you'll see in the pictures they still have the foam unused and a brand new set of pickup screws. They're not scratched, as far as I can see. Any marks you can see are on the plastic case, not the pups themselves. The case is in great condition. All yours for £45 posted. Thanks for looking
 16. I seem to remember that I had a problem or other when I paid my first 20. I simply PMed one of the Mods and it was soon fixed. It may take a day but no worries. All will be okay
 17.
What are people's (constructive!) thoughts on its quality ? Vintage tort owners please also comment https://www.dropbox....%2032.jpeg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox....%2018.jpeg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox....%2038.jpeg?dl=0 Thanks
That's what I'd expect if I ordered tort.
 18.
I liked my Thunder but f@@k me it was heavy that is the only reason I got rid of it
This weighs 4.3Kg. That's 9.48lb in old money.
 19. This is a bit of a blatant plug really. I like this bass, had some fun with it, but it's time to move it on. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy taking a look More pics here
 20. It's time to cull the herd. Mrs G is getting narked at the collection. So here goes a really nice example of a Westone Thunder 1A from the Matsumoku factory in Japan. This is a great piece of history, but I'd let it go for £150. This is a precision bass with original pickups; with adjustable cores to the pickups, to allow you to adjust the sound to your taste. This is an active bass and the electrics are the originals with the exception of the one of the battery connectors, which I've replaced. The switches and pots all work well. There are no real dings or scrapes to tell you about with the exception of a small worn patch in the lacquer above the pups. There's no buckle rash or anything. The strings are good and it's nicely set up. It comes in a "home made" case that was made by the original owner. The lining is a bit moth-eaten, but it's pretty solid and does the job well; not that I'd call it a "flight case". The weight of this is about "medium" really. It weighs 4.3Kg. That's 9.48lb in old money. It sits well on the strap without any neck dive and doesn't break your back. Thanks for looking. The pics aren't the greatest. I might try to get some better ones soon. If you want pics of anything in particular just post below and I'll be pleased to get you the best ones I can. For those reading in black and white, I live on the Herts/Essex border but do travel about and might be able to deliver. I'm also happy to ship it. Payment by cash or bank transfer prefered. More pics here Or please enjoy the thumbs below.
 21.
It won’t let me upload any photos at the moment, might be this PC! I can email them on request though.
Host them on photobucket. It always works for me
 22.
I've already saved £500. http://www.goldfinch...the-baby-piano/ Just another £474,500 to go then. Plus VAT, of course.
Cool. Don't forget to bring it to the Herts Bass Bash. Mrs G would love to give it a go
 23.
I'm fascinated by the luthier's art, and I love the great variety of beautiful woods available, but how do you tell a good piece from an indifferent one? They all sound the same when I knuckle them. Also, how do you know which woods will combine well? Is it just received wisdom?
It usually has a Warwick neck attached.
