1. Martin at Sei basses charged me £130 to fret a fretless bass, that included a perfect setup. It took him two days to cut the fret slots by hand, the neck was bound and he didn't want to damage the binding. He did a fantastic job. My advice is this....if you can't afford to have it done by a professional like Martin, then wait a few weeks until you can. It'll be cheaper in the long run.
2.
It is not that they are inately crap - it is that there are 53 million songs out there and everyone playes those 5.
I totally agree with you, I personally hate playing 'So what', I've played it so many times. My point is this though. When I first started playing jazz about 12 years ago, I found it really hard to find people to play with. Players at the only jam in my area were far more advanced than me. It was a catch 22 situation. I'd never played jazz so people wouldn't let me play with them, which meant that I wasn't getting any playing experience, so I couldn't play with people. I see it this way, if you're playing with people, then that's great. If they're better than you then that's even better, and who cares what tunes they're playing. 'So what' is actually quite a hard tune to play, you have to count the bars as you're playing, 16 bars of Dm7, 8 bars of Ebm7, 8 bars of Dm7. Basically playing with someone is better than sitting at home practising, and a lot of jazz musicians can be very......shall we say 'set in their ways'. "You don't play jazz on an electric bass" is something that I've heard on a couple of occassions.
3. Anyone else ordered anything from them ?. I ordered a strap from them last Wednesday, Friday I get an email telling me its been posted. Nothing has arrived so far so I give them a ring only to be told that it's actually out of stock......what ?. How annoying. They've given me a refund, but why tell me that it'd been posted.
4. I have to agree with lozbass. I had an Alembic Stanley Clarke and it was amazing, but the price !!!!!. Sei basses take a lot of beating though, and are my favourite. I'm onto my 4th one now, the others were all bought used, but the one I have now was made for me. It's coming up to its 1st birthday next week and I really can't see me ever selling it. Its construction is 2nd to none and it plays and sounds great, if I fell out with something about it then I'd just ask Martin to change that something.
5.
AAAAAAAARGH! If you want to know about jazz, stay away from jam sessions that play Canteloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Chameleon, C Jam Blues and So What!
I actually quite like a few of those songs, Chemeleon especially and Herbie Hancock still plays it so it must be good . We play 4 of those in my one band, we don't play C jam blues however. We play them because people like to hear them, they go down well at gigs with people who aren't necessarily 'jazz lovers'. We have two graduates from Birmingham conservatoire jazz course and the trombone player is a current student on the classical music course, the rest of us are pro and semi pro players.
6.
He is boring. Great bandleader, composer and innovator but I think his trumpet playing sucks. And don't bother with Mike Stern. The guy's exactly what's wrong with jazz today IMO. Check out some Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis (his records are brilliant even if I don't like his trumpet playing), Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul. Between them they have most things covered!
Sorry but I have to reply to this, 'cos you quite clearly don't know what you're talking about, or have never actually heard him. His phrasing, choice of notes and knowing when not to play were amazing, and without comparison. LISTEN to one of his songs, and I mean LISTEN, not just hear it. He'll play when you don't expect him to, and there will be silence when you expect to hear him, and his phrasing will blow you away if you let it. There's a wonderful version of 'Autum leaves' on the 'Blue note years' album, his playing is quite breathtaking, and so full of emotion.
7. I play in a jazz band with a drummer that you play with, Phil Guest, he calls this the batman bass. This is a really cool looking bass and I can't believe it hasn't sold yet, I was very tempted to buy it myself but ended up with an NS CR4M, anyway have a bump from me.
8. I just bought an NS CR4M from on here, it's very portable, much so than a 'real DB' and can sound very much like a real DB, at least to my ears anyway. It's also quite easy to play, I only got it yesterday but I'm planning on using it for a couple of tunes on a gig tomorrow afternoon. Do a search on talkbass in their DB forum, I should guess that the basses you mention are a bit more common over there. There's a very cool looking EUB for sale here, I almost bought it before I saw my NS. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=43385
9. There's one on the Gallery website...... http://www.thebassgallery.com/status.html
10. As new, I bought it for the Epifani head that I used to have, I now have a very much smaller Genz Benz shuttle which won't fit in the case, it goes in my gigbag, so this is surpless and in the way. £65 including shipping.
11. I bought this to replace a regular Comfort strap that I wasn't getting on with, and I'm not liking this either so I've ordered a wide padded Levy's leather strap. It's a week old and not been used for more than 30 minutes I guess, so it can be yours for £15 posted.
12.
Am I correct in believing he's polish? Anyways, insulting people spoils it for those who have a genuine and serious interest in understanding what these people have to say, regardless of whether they agree with it or not. That doesn't impose a requirement on everyone to suck up but chips-on-shoulders won't be welcome either.
He's from London, his dad was Polish hence the name. I agree with everything you say about hoping people don't spoil it for others, there are a lot of people on here, mysellf included who do want to improve as players, and having people like Janek, Steve and Jeff Berlin can only be a good thing.
13.
I reckon an out of time "live" feel is ideal to practice with. Gives you a more realist training exercise for when you are thrown into the real world battlefield.
Just hope you don't end up playing with a good drummer.
14.
That would be amazing. Ever had anything like that before on Basschat?
Should be interesting after what happened to Steve Lawson and Janek Gwizdala.

16. I fancy an 'all in one' floor mount effects to save carrying my rack about. I only use chorus, delay and reverb sounds, how do they sound compared to the ones on the GT10B. The GT10B has a looper which is a bonus.
17. I mentioned it some time ago, I guess there are so many postings that items soon get moved down. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...3&hl=dublin
18. I'm going to this week long improvistaion workshop, just wondered if anyone else was going to it. http://www.berklee.edu/summer/dublin.html
19. A friend of mine knows someone who attended, he taught him privately for as bit to get him up to the standard for the course. He too found it really helpful to his playing of music. There's playing music and playing bass.
