1.
I feel immediately at home on the fretless 5, I always struggled with the old Series 1 six string fretless.... the extra string and concentrating on intonation was just too much for my tired old brain. With the five I only need to think about playing in tune, it's a joy to play and has every kind of usable tone you could want from a bass. It's a little dark with Hotwire Halfwounds but I'm going to try your suggestion of Elixirs and see if they give me the tone I'm after without biting into the fingerboard too much. I'm getting to grips with the fretted 6 although I've not worked out anything yet that properly uses the extra string. I'm going to look into some chord based stuff and harmonics when I get some time, I seem to be working round the clock at the moment. It sounds different again to my old Series 1 and the newer bolt on S2 Classic, almost hollow sounding but with lots of projection - not sure if it's the maple fingerboard or the individual bridge pieces (rather than the all in units on the other basses which sound more focussed). It's got a nice floaty, lighter tone that works for more fancy playing, so I'll probably still be using the 5 stringers for the more day to day playing. It's early days yet and I'll do some experimenting with different strings over the coming months, I'll hopefully get some samples recorded and get a better idea how everything really sounds and will try to post something here or on the statii site.
A lovely pair of Status basses sir! Nick (yes, still alive!)
2. Allo! They were aimed at the `Jazz-Ray' market - nice basses - very straight kinda tone - bit like a Jazz or Ray! Not perhaps as detailed tone-wise as the MK models etc but a good working instrument!
3. Hello fellow gardeners! These are some vintage pics taken in my old garden....! Once I can locate all 70 basses and the garden is sorted ie triffids have all been flamed-throwered! then we will be in store for a treat! Good to be back! Nick
4. Hallo! Been away for a bit developing my ESP and healing powers but hey, rock and roll still pays the mortgage! Ian (Ebasses) Hancock and I have started to `convert' my Electra to the Squire spec - problem is, I use it all the time and thus the mods are still under development! I've located some Schaller machine heads and the right version of the Badass bridge as per Chris' bass - Ian is going to refinish it and will have a polished stainless steel scratchplate made too! The only pics I have are sh*te but will upload em once they are on photobucket. The top horn needs slimming down a bit and the bottom horn is still too thick but this will be sorted!! Balance-wise, it sits very well, no neck dive to speak of! Oh, best of luck with this project! Cheers! Nick
5. Nice one! I gigged mine the nite I bought it and it really delivers! Thinking about getting another one and having it sprayed lake placid blue - with the tort plate it will look superb! Bro Richardus - did not realise ye had boughteth oneth! Nick x
6. Hi Ian!!! Looks fantastic mate - it looks as though it will exhibit a lovely deep tone with excellent `swell' to the notes! That pickup looks very potent - whats it made from (housing) Cheers - and great to hear from you - can you believe E Basses is ten years old now!!! Nick

9.
Yup, that was me! I had serious GAS for it and just had to buy it. Great bass for the money and it looks the business. Even the missus was impressed!
I was the same mate - walked into the shop - plugs it in - sold. About 2 minutes 20 secs!
10.
I was under the impression that, the UK distributers at the time,Selmer ? re-sprayed a lot of Fender basses at the time, because the custom colours were hard to come by,and the colour turned out slightly pink instead of fiesta red.
This is the story I have heard - the Salmon pink colour was not a standard US Fender color (sp!) and due to the popularity for fiesta red, they sprayed a lot of instruments and the colour was more pink than red! Comparing the new bass to my original fiesta red '83 JV Precision, its a different colour! The name of said colour does not really matter to me - it just screams `Jet Harris 1961' at me!!!!
11. Gigged it last nite - awesome! Buy one today!!! Nick x
12. Fosk! I've got a really cool goatee beard now - I think I should do it! Hope you are ok m8! Nick
13.
the blue one is filth...
Me want!!!! Did that bass have a brass scratchplate until fairly recently??
14. Nice collection Gary!!!! (he says!!) Seriously, you are nearly as bad a boy as me! We should get together and open the world's biggest bass shop! Hope you are keeping well and spitting fire/blood etc!!! Nick
15. Just to say thanks Andy for a great transaction - all the very best to you m8! I've not plugged her in yet as got in really late following a trip over to see one of my best mates in Salford (which I do know how to get to funnily enough!) but I know its love already! Cheers! Nick (Miller!)
16. I think Chris is onto a winner with these! They ARE a success already - as Chris says, they are a series of instruments in their own right and if someone wants one, they will buy one! Take it from me, I've designed basses over the years that some people love (i.e the E Basses Hornet which was voted bass of 2001 by The Guitar and Bass mag) and others absolutely detest (bast*rds!!) - no one is forcing anyone to either like, love, hate or purchase ANY bass! The prototype stage is of vital importance and Chris is very open to ideas and suggestions; however at the end of the day, its his venture and people need to respect that. At the same time, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and who knows, we might see some more new bass makers spring forth into the market place, such as Big Red Bung with a brand new take on design/form! Good luck! Nick
17. Ah! Brother! Ye hath beat me to the Fiesta Fancy! Well done mate - a fine pairage! I found a lovely used US Vintage '57 P bass today and it really wants me to buy it.....however casheth is tight and I'm lusting after another Jazz bass right now...! Nico x
18.
Here are a few more, a couple of '93 Series 1s and an Energy from a few years later:
A stunning trio! Those burst finishes are lovely - would have been from around '90/'91 I would estimate! Was down at the Status factory today! Rob is very well and they are very busy down there - the factory is having a mezzanine floor put in to give them more workspace `upstairs' as it were! Take care y'all! Nick
19.
Bump
Nice!
20.
I've always thought that one of those would fit in VERY nicely in my collection too! I've been keeping my eyes open for the last couple of years but they're rare as hens teeth!
This might be war then!!!! Mwahahaha! Luv yer really Gary!
21. I too would pawn my remaining kidney for one of these! I've just started `squire-ising' my Electra MPC bass - the horns are off!!! Nick
