Greetings! I met Pete at Birchanger Services and we had a great chat about all things bass and did a trade! I'm now the proud dad to his Electra MPC bass and he now is dad to my Status Series II. He's a great guy and we are thinking about forming a comedy duo based around a series of text messages with relevance to the dynamic rock supergroup Yes! Seriously, he's a good lad! Cheers Pete! ATB! Ten true hours and he'll be there and working too Twenty quid before its done you'll see fish and chips for you! Hehe! * my tech and good buddy! As a mod, I think we'd better be careful, perhaps an Off Topic thread could carry this on! -
TRADED. Let the destruction, decimation, sawing, drilling, refinishing and Squire worship begin Only kidding, thanks to Nick for great trade, and coffee
Thank you Pete! Great text message convo earlier! Did you get to the airport on time? Topographite! Love it! I've now finished the mods - here it is: Looking good eh? -
Sounds like a job for The Mighty Persuaders!!! http://www.themightypersuaders.co.uk I don't actually officially play for them but I have depped for them - their drummer Spike T. Smith has toured extensively with Morrisey and The Damned (not at the same time!). They are based here in Peterborough and are very competitive price-wise. Gizz Butt (The Prodigy) sometimes deps in for the regular guitar player! Book 'em danno! Nick

coffee hits screen!!! Superb! .....it's you who will wake, alone & sweating in the dark, dead hours before dawn, cries of remorse dying on your lips; you, who will face your own haggard reflection each morning Jon - I think you must be psychic mate - thats a normal part of my daily routine! I can get Ian Hancock to lop the horns off and keep the offcuts just in case I change me mind...just superglue 'em back on eh? Seriously, I'm picking the bass up from Stansted later today as you read this! How's about a simple refinish in white...? -
I love those metal fretboards.
So do I ! Superb superb example - I would have it but as many of you may know, I've just recently bought a brand new one and am now fiscally embarrassed. This particular bass has a maple (I think) through neck with truss rod (cover on head face) - I would hazard an educated guess that it sounds completely awesome (same EQ as my Arpege - one of the most powerful circuits out there).
Wow, thats gotta be interesting, brothers who play bass, hmm, must make for some pretty intersting conversations (for you, not for your family..) Nice Basses! Dazzz
Well in fact we are not brothers in the biblical sense but we are very similar (both full time players and bass nuts!!! Thanks for a great evening Rich - was really great to see you again and have a good play on your lovely basses! Got home safely. That meal was hot! Rich's Statii collection is fantastic - they are all full of rich tonal variation and character. The walnut 4 string S2 is my favourite (tons of power) but the S2 bolt on is perhaps the best five string I know of - its full of fruity goodness - and the Streamline - cool as ice! The white LEDS really set it off and the fact that the front and side ones are switchable means a practical use on gigs where you dont want to blind the crowd! The StingRay with the piezo is another beaut - smooth and silky when required and then into growling like a rottweiler and the Jazzes are great! (she will be mine soon!). See ya soon! Nick -

TRADED: Chris Squire Electra Bass
Agree with Mr. Corpse. This bass is part of the Outlaw range - which is in fact named from the band The Outlaws, who endorsed Electra in the 70s. The built-in MPC effects (modular powered circuits) appeared in numerous Electra guitars from 1976 until the early 80s. SLM might possibly have had the bass modified to Squire's specs, but Electra were sourced from Fujigen, Matsumoku & Kasuga. I think the Outlaw range were made by Kasuga - there are design traits & specific components which appear on Kasuga's Scorpion series also. And whoever's bought this - please don't turn it into some sort of fanboy parody. J.
Bzzzzzzzzz, bzzzzzzzz, bzzzzzz - mind those fingers! (sound of the jigsaw, cutting away excess hornage!!!) Now, I wonder who the new `daddy' might be....?! Chris bless him, does sometimes expand the truth a little bit! He mentions that he designed the Mouradian CS-74 when in fact Jim Mouradian built it and presented it to him as a gift! He is still one of my all-time heroes, so I suppose I could well be described as a `fanboy'.... Oh, here's a good resource: http://www.rivercityamps.com/electra/history.php ATB! Nick -
Looks like that model Jon - couple of knobs missing on this example! Do you remember the very first range of Aria Integras - going back to around '87 I think - smaller headstock with the fine tune bridge unit - always wanted one of those. Nick
No - it would be f*cking unforgiveable vandalism. How is this different to getting a 1960s Precision & hacking it into a teardrop shape because that's what Geddy Lee did? Except 60s Ps are a damn sight easier to find - in any condition - than these. J.
Entirely up to the eventual purchaser! Hehehe! Where's my tech...! -
Hallo! It was a great gig but having seen the band four times now, Jon, along with Chris is the heart of the band - Benoit is superb and I think should try not to keep aping Jon's stagecraft as he (Benoit) does have his own character. To those of you who love the band, you won't be disappointed but whereas you'd normally get 110% magic, this show is around 100% if you get where I'm coming from. On saying that, And You And I brought a tear to my eye, mainly due to me poking myself there! At the end of the day, for me, Squire is the star of the show anyway, he is a true showman! For you bass fans, Squire used the following! The famous cream '65 Rickenbacker (that one!) Electra MPC Mouradian CS-74 (the green one that I would sell all internal organs for!) - funnily enough he did not use this on `Owner', using the MPC instead! Lakland `Bob Glaub' in silver grey Fish Out Of Water custom painted Rickenbacker (black finish) For more Yes news, check out: http://www.yesworld.com Cheers Nick

Question For You Music Readers Out There
doctor_of_the_bass replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
Its not just about the dots. Its also about understanding the genre you are playing in. A classical player who can read anything cannot just go into a jazz or a rock session and make it happen without some comprehension of the medium they are engaging with. I had a BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra first bassist dep for me in a big band once (his call) but, despite reading every note 'correctly' he didn't come even close to swinging. If you ever read a classical score along with the music being played, you will quickly realise that the dots are only a part of the story. You have to know the genre.
Fully agree. Interpretation and empathy/understanding of the musical situation very very important! -
Allo! Young Karlthebassist and myself went to see them last night at the Hammersmith Apollo - great show but without Jon Anderson, it was not quite the same....! Squire was on great form - he's looking even bigger these days and at one point broke one of his nails. The bass sound was pretty good and his Taurus pedals...very moving! Anyone else seen them? Nick
I'd leave the scratch guard as it is, Andy. It looks really nice and very individual.
Have to agree with my brother on this - theres something very nice about lake placid blue and a tortie plate!
Just picked up one of the above. I'd never heard of 'em but love it do death. Anyone got one/used one? Opinions? Manual? Chris
I've had one for around 20 years or so - great unit but its now retired! No manual I'm afraid. Nick
-
Allo! I first tried one about a year ago and was not 100% convinced to be honest. However, I've now got one here at the moment and having had it since Sunday, it is an incredible bass, really something else. There are obvious comparisons in terms of shape etc with the Wal basses but its nothing like a Wal in terms of everything else - Martin designed it the way he did as it works ergonomically etc. The pickup is very easy to use once you memorise the LED colours/coil options and after about 10 minutes sitting down with it, going through the combinations, its actually very easy to use and the tonal variations are superb. I think he's onto a winner! Nick

fs/ft Custom 6 String (ON HOLD PENDING FORMALITIES)
doctor_of_the_bass replied to SimBass's topic in Basses For Sale
Aha! Thats a blast from the past! Hi Simeon! This bass belonged to Jon Bamforth and he had three E Basses built (note I'm not a partner in the business any more due to lack of time, just a willing unpaid helper so this is not an advert for E Basses!). Jon still had this bass at that point and wanted the same electronics, hence the upgrade. Jon was very sadly crippled in an horrific motorcycle accident many years ago and this bass is very lightweight as it had to sit on his lap when playing. ATB Nick -

Studio/Session Player Out There
doctor_of_the_bass replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't call myself a "session player" as I don't do it that often, but I've come across both scenarios. A few years back I played on a dance track - played the ostinato for 4 minutes and at the end the producer flicked through, found a bar where every note was mechanically dead on, and copy and pasted it across the whole track
Same here really, there aren't that many local sessions up here but I've done stuff for different people in studios and have experienced both `fully played' and `pasted' situations! I recall one situation where the drums were `moved' to be in time with me!!! Hehehe!
