My Shukers
I never thought i'd say these words, but I like the 6 string single-cut. Nice pair.
Cheers dude, glad you approve
Indeed a nice pair you have their Eude! Good pictures Mate and reminds me I must take some of mine for the porn section. Take care, JTB
Yeah man, get some nice "glamour" shots of that Shuker of yours. I had to wait for a day when I was in during daylight, believe it or not this was the first opportunity this year!
Really nice...and I'm not usually keen on sixes. Two questions - does the 33" make much difference to the feel/ how do the EMG JV's work for trad Jbass tone?
Thanks man! The 33" scale doesn't make a huge difference to the feel. Simply by the laws of physics, things will be a little looser, however, I'm currently using some very nice SIT Nickels which are that little bit tighter which helps to compensate. The slightly shorter scale also makes the bass a lot more playable especially if you've got small hands like myself. The EMG JV's get a very good traditional bass tone without any hum or unwanted noise. The bridge pickup doesn't quite get to a glass breaking honk, but it's pretty close. The neck pickup is thick, dark and bassy. My only criticism is that the tone knob doesn't do a whole lot, SteveSoar did warn me of that, so I might swap that out for something else. Cheers, Eude

    My Shukers

Hey guys, here's some long overdue, half decent, pics of my two Shukers. First up is my newly acquired Pub Bass >> 33" Scale Downsized J Bass shape, Slab Finished Black Walnut body with Black Wet Look Gloss finish and matching headstock (a bugger to keep clean and shiny ) 5 piece Mahogany/Wenge neck with graphite rods, 22 frets and Rosewood Fingerboard EMG JV pickups and electronics with vol /vol /tone control layout This bass makes some fantastic dark and thick vintage tones and even a fairly convincing Jaco impersonation, although my playing isn't really up to it... Next up is my 6 String Single-Cut Bolt-On >> 33" Scale tuned B to C Single-Cut, Slab Finished White Ash Body with an Amboyna Drop Top and matching headstock and Satin Laquer 5 piece Maple/Wenge neck with graphite rods, 24 frets and Santos Rosewood Fingerboard Dual EMG DC pickups with Shuker designed 3 band EQ with internal mid freq control and gain This bass has a real hi-fi thing going on with a fantastic range of tones available thanks to the EMGs and the Shuker 3 band EQ. Here's a couple of pics of them together These basses really contrast and complement each other very nicely providing a go to bass for each aspect of playing I'm currently involved in. I'm one happy bunny Cheers, Eude
  3. Awesome stands but ERB players be warned, the standard bass model is a bit of a neat fit for even a narrow necked 6 string bass. There is a classical guitar model however, which is apparently a better bet. Cheers, Eude
  4.
V nice! I'd say a third the width of the grille.
I second that. I think half the width would be too much. A 3rd is subtle, without being too subtle. Very nice work Mr. Deksawyer too. Eude
  5.
Midget Twin should be the same size as the Big One whilst Big Baby should be the same size as The Compact. Similar weights too. Price-wise, expect the new 12" models to cost about the same as the equivalent 15" models currently do (i.e. Big Baby = Big One, Midget = Compact, Midget Twin = Vintage) though the 15"s will be going up in price about £30 per woofer due to the plummeting GBP vs USD once I run out of my current stock of speakers. Alex
Nice one! I imagine you might see an Aguilar 112 appear in the For Sale section when you can get your mitts on the 12" drivers... Eude
  6.
Any cabs with two woofers will be 4 ohm, the rest will be 8 ohm. In terms of bottom the cabs go: Midget << Compact & Vintage << Big One & Big Baby & Big Twin In terms of voltage sensitivity the cabs go: Big Baby < Midget < Big One < Compact < Big Twin < Midget Twin < Vintage In terms of max LF SPL the cabs go: Midget < Compact < Big Baby < Midget Twin < Big One < Vintage < Big Twin In terms of max broadband SPL the cabs go: Big Baby < Midget < Compact < Big One < Midget Twin < Big Twin < Vintage The Big One and The Big Baby are aimed at those that want maximum bottom and punch and clarity and off-axis response. The Compact is aimed at those that want a cab that has maximum output for the weight and price, good bottom, very good sensitivity. The Midget is aimed at those that want a smaller version of The Compact - it has less bottom naturally it'll take EQ very well to get that bottom back. The Midget Twin is aimed at those that want a really loud lightweight cab, even louder than The Compact but are willing to compromise on bottom - a Schroeder killer! The Big Twin is aimed at those that want a Big One but want a 4 ohm load to get more from their amp, are scared of 15" speakers or want a bit more max SPL than The Big One. I'll also be making The Big Sub and The Baby Sub (basically The Big One and The Big Baby without the midrange but still with the lowpass filtering on the woofers) for those that want an expandable rig. I suppose I could also make a Big Twin Sub for mad/deaf people... The designs shouldn't take too long as I've done the hard part in getting the previous models and the crossover sorted. The more pertinent question is how long until the speakers arrive this side of the pond? Alex
Wow Alex, That's a fairly broad spectrum of cabs, but all with a well thought out niche in the market - Nice work. Still reckon either a Midget Twin or more likely a Big Baby would suit me well, as decent off axis response would be very handy given the varying sizes of stages and venues my band ends up playing. When will you have an idea of sizes, weight, prices etc.? Eude
  7.
I think this will be The Big Baby. And then the 2x12"+6.5" The Big Twin, the tiny 12" The Midget, and the compact 2x12" The Midget Twin. What a lot of different models but each one will have its own niche! Alex
Really cool ideas Alex! These all sound amazing, maybe a Midget Twin might end being up my street, either that or The Big Baby. I love the sound of 12" speakers. Are any of these units going to be 4 Ohm? How soon do you think you'll have the designs on these worked up? Cheers, Eude
  8.
Looks like the new Eminence 12"s are worth using - will be making a mini version of The Big One which will be the same size as The Compact and also a larger version of The Big One for those that want even more output and a 4 ohm load. The other 12" doesn't have as much bottom as I'd like but will still be a really nice high sensitivity cab for those that want something smaller than The Compact or something even louder (as a 2x12" version) and thanks to its high excursion it will be able to move a lot of bottom, you'll just need to EQ it in that much more. Alex
Awesome news Alex. I look forward to see how this cab develops... Will you call it The Medium One?... Eude
  9.
The Probags looks nice, but the all leather thing automatically makes me think "heavy". How's yours weight-wise?
Hey man, it's not too bad actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the weight, although it is a single bag rather than a double. I was using a top of the range Ritter bag which was a lot heavier, one of the new style ones and it literally fell to bits over the last 2 years. I was very very disappointed with it, when I finally put it in the bin, it had no grab handles left and only one shoulder strap! The Pro Bag is really a breath of fresh air, I've finally found a bag worthy of carrying my shiny Shukers around. If you want, I'll try and get some photos for you next week. Cheers, Eude
  10. I took delivery of an all black Shuker J Bass just before Christmas and it rocks! The best Jazz bass I've ever played, plus it's to my specs too. I'm hoping to get some nice pictures of it soon, at the moment I never seem to be out of the office during daylight which makes photography difficult. Sorry though, not up for swapping... Cheers, Eude
  11. Ah... In that case, the Artist might be right up your street. I know I'd like one for some of my more "acoustic moments". I've always flirted with the idea of a Lined Fretless 30" Scale 6 String Single Cut Artist with an F Hole, Rosewood top and a single Kent Armstrong Pickup towards the neck and a Piezo bridge for some sweet thick upright style tones, god knows what it'd cost though!!! Might just ask Jon for a quick guesstimate, but it'd have to go on the back burner till next year some time. Maybe one day though... Might be worth giving Rob at Shuker a shout, as he's provided a lot of the sound clips on Jon's site, including one for an Artist bass and is a professional bassist, he might be able to give you some feedback on his own "real world" experience of an Artist bass. Cheers, Eude
  12. Hey man, I haven't played an Artist, but I do have one of Jon's J Basses and it's bloody brilliant! I'd be wary of going down the Artist route unless you where looking for something to give you a more acoustic sounding bass for use in a suitable context. I get the impression you're a bit of a rocker, so I'm not sure the Artist would be your cup of tea. Just my 2p mate. Eude
  13. Hey man, just realised you had a post on here as well as TalkBass... Like I said on TalkBass, check out www.probag-net.com Pretty sure they used to make the Low End bags, as they are identical, but a fair bit cheaper. I got one, shipped from Bolvia, of all places, for $180 all in which worked out about £130 at the time. I could not be happier with mine I can get some pics together if you want too. They do custom bags and adjustments too, so you could be quite specific about the dimensions of a Shuttle Shaped pocket... Cheers, Eude
  14. I'd happily take a ticket too mate. Great idea! Cheers, Eude
  15. Congrats Meester Bunny, That's going to be one sexy bass my friend. The Ziracote is incredible. Going to enjoy seeing this one develop... Eude
  16. Absolutely gorgeous mate! The Wenge looks good enough to eat. How much does it weigh? Eude
  17. I played through one at a gig last year and I was pleasantly surprised. It was plenty loud and seemed to have a pretty decent breadth of tone, it was pretty big and heavy though. I would never pay the full list price for it but at that amount it's a bit of a bargain, I imagine rehearsal rooms across the country might jump on them! Cheers, Eude
  18. Thought there was going to be a picture based update... Eude
  19. Nice one dude! You kept that quiet, I bet it'll be a peach of a neck. Looking forward to seeing the pics... Eude
  20. Holy Crap Peter! That bass is gorgeous! I got a squint at it last time I visited Alan as it was hanging on the wall, it looked good enough then but bloomin' 'ell that is so gorgeous now it's done! Congratulations mate, Eude
  21.
I think Jon is making some really special basses right now.
He certainly is, my new Stealth/Pub Jazz Bass is the bomb! Spent all last night trying to do my best Jaco Pastorius impression, first time I've ever had a bass that could get so close to the trademark tone. Cheers, Eude
  22.
Lovely lovely lovely! Any pics of the rear (mmmm....) and the neck? Surprised and interested about the shorter scale and low B, I thought you'd have to go the other way with a low B and get a longer (35"?) scale to suit the tension/tone better?
Hey Al, I've got a six string Shuker Bolt-on Single-cut with a 33" scale and a cracking low B too. Mike's right, there's a bit of magic that certain luthiers can instil in their instruments to make them work. Fodera do a roaring trade in 33" basses with low Bs, CB Basses have even done a couple of 32" 6 strings with low Bs which worked great too so I'm told. Here's a wee clip of me playing my Shuker, where I use the low B string towards the end, apologies for the sloppy playing >> http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/03SlapandFingerFunk.mp3 I've been using my bass live and for recording exclusively and the low B out performs every 6er I've owned and most of the ones I've had a go of too, bar a loverly 33" Fodera I tried in Boston a few years back, which is what finally convinced me go for the 33" for my custom bass having struggled with regular and larger scale basses all my life. I really don't think I'd ever go back to a 34" now. Cheers, Eude
  23. Awesome news dude! Can't wait to see the finished article, you lucky beggar... Cheers, Eude
  24.
sounded pretty good to my ears, but yeah you do look a little rough
Cheeky Bugger! Notice in the first clip I keep touching my nose? That was to try and stop it running all over my lovely new bass. Note to self - blow nose before going on stage! Any sign of your bass yet mate? Eude
  25. Since getting my Shuker J Bass, I'm getting the horn for all things Jazz Bass and the Sadowsky basses are certainly the daddy where Jazz Basses are concerned. I'm not sure that subscribing to this topic is a particularly good idea... Nice basses guys! Eude
