Anybody used the Rotosound Nexus strings yet ?
eude replied to markdavid's topic in Accessories and Misc
Right, strings are on and so far so good. Not had an enormous amount of playing time yet, but I'm pretty impressed. They're not quite as bright as I thought they would be, but they are very thick and punchy, quite aggressive sounding. The coating doesn't feel weird at all, in fact they feel like regular strings. String tension, I'd say is a little softer than average, bit like DR Sunbeams, but they feel nice. I'm afraid I can't comment on the longevity yet, obviously, but I will in due course. Can't really comment on how they compare to other coated strings either, as I've never tried any others, but I have heard that some brands can feel a bit slippery, the Nexus strings feel pretty much normal as I mentioned before which was a nice surprise. Got a practice on Wednesday and a gig on Friday, so I'll spill a bit more once I've had more proper playing time with them. Oh one negative point, they have multicoloured silks on them, a different colour each string which kinda spoils the black evil look I was hoping for... Cheers, Eude -

I just ordered some today. I'll hopefully get them on the bass before the end of the working week. I only paid £25 including postage off ebay by the way. Watch this space... Eude -
Same dimensions as the Compact but a few lbs heavier due to the added midrange speaker and crossover. Will completely and utterly flatten every other 1x12" you can buy and even many 4x10"s! Should have the first one done some time in May. Alex
Very excited about this one... Eude -
Looking awesome dude! Well worth the wait? Eude
OK update. Now the post-coital glow has subsided, I've decided that even though the bass might have a little settling in to do, I'm not all that happy with the sound of the Delano SBC's. I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with them but I wanted warm pickups and these babies just aren't delivering. The bass doesn't sound solid enough to me. In fact the only time I've had a satisfactory sound out of the pickups is when I've recentred the mid sweep as low as possible and boosted both the mids and bass to the maximum on the bass. Then it started to sound quite nice. I've spoken to Jon about it and discussed the possibility of Andy at Wizard rewinding the neck pickup to give the bass more oomph. There's also too much mid scoop in the sound when both pickups are on (perhaps because the pickups are so similar in voicing) so I'm hoping that tweaking the neck pickup might reduce the scoopy character a little more. I'm also aware that the Shuker preamp is only being fed by 9v at the moment, because Jon didn't have enough space to put the other 9v battery. Normally I might feel a bit guilty about being demanding but after waiting this long for it, I feel like I have a right to satisfaction. Jon said he's going to talk to both Wizard and also to Newtone about some custom PSD strings for the bass while we wait for the piezo saddles to be redesigned with larger transducers so better string contact is possible.
I was about to ask you how you where getting on with the Delanos mate, sorry to hear they're not quite your thing. Jon's pre is pretty transparent when set flat, so getting the pickups right should be your first point of call. Maybe some custom made pickups by the Wizard might be the way to go, I reckon some overwound Jazz style pickups would match up very nicely with the pre. I think the 18V option does make a difference too though. With my six string, I just solo the front pickup, notch the bass up a bit, and back the treble off slightly and it sounds huge! That is with EMG DC's though... Newtone will definitely be able to hook you up with anything you want string-wise too. Keep us posted Eude
That is gorgeous. Great choice of everything. I must get along to Jon Shuker's to have a look and a play. I've got until January 2010 to choose a fretted IV for my 50th birthday - anyone know what the typical wait is for a Shuker?
I think the wait can vary, but I'd allow about 12 months(ish) to be safe. If you let Jon know you have a big deadline on it, like your 50th, I'm sure he'd make the extra effort to make sure you get it in time Cheers, Eude

Wow Kiwi, that bass is amazing! Well worth the wait I bet. I really wish you hadn't posted these photos though, I had finally got my headless 6 string GAS out of my system and now it's back with avengeance! Congrats dude - enjoy it! Eude

Holy Crap - that is gorgeous! I've seen Adamovic stuff before and it always looked nice, but never really stood out from the pack, but that thing's given me a semi Eude

I've got a Mark Bass LittleMark 250 and an Aguilar GS112 and it's surprisingly loud, but I wish I could've got the grown up LittleMark. The Mark Bass head is very transparent, to my ears. I have two quite different sounding basses and their voices speak very clearly through this set up. I believe the Aguilar DB range have a thicker, more low mid range sound and look a bit cooler, but I can't really complain about the GS range at all, plenty of bass considering it's just a wee 12" speaker! Cheers, Eude
It'll be far too much fun with valve amps to not make it available! However, for those with less old school leanings I think I'll recommend saving some weight and size and going for the Big One, it is just so damn loud and punchy and clear wherever you stand on stage. The support band on Tuesday's gig were an interesting kind of punky twist on Tool, v stop-start, odd changes etc; quite cool stuff. The bassist was playing a P-bass with a pick and it sounded so damned angry through the Big One, really gnarly and aggressive but tons of bottom too. Alex
You're talking me into trying a 15" again dude! I'm using my Aguilar GS112 with the tweeter off at the moment, and I'm not really missing it, which means I'm only using the 12" because it's light, but your "Big One", pardon my french, is lighter! I don't 'spose any BareFaced cabs are making it up to the Scotland/North England Bass Bash are they?... Eude -
quick update, the hipshot stringtree's have now arrived, so the bass SHOULD be arriving next mon/tues..........hopefully!
Finally!

Can extended range basses also be medium scaled?
eude replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in Bass Guitars
Hey there, I've got a 33" Shuker 6 string with a Low B and have no problems with it whatsoever. It doesn't have any additional tweaks to achieve extra tightness on the low B, it'll never be as good as the one on a Dingwall bass, with it's 37" scale on the B string, but it's just fine for me. You can hear it here on this wee sound sample >> http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/03SlapandFingerFunk.mp3 I use the low B string about half way through and it was recorded direct without any other tweaking, bar a little from the onboard EQ. The main critical thing that I think contributes is a brass nut and a decent break angle across it. I'll have at the Scotland/North England Bass Bash in Moffat if anyone fancies a go... My bass is a bolt on single cut and I've been talking to some folks about a low B on 30" scale, including Jim T on TalkBass Here's his bass, hope he doesn't mind me sharing the pic. Jim is convinced that having the bass as rigid as possible helps a lot with the low B on his 30" scale, so neck through construction using rock 'ard woods, and the single cut design to a certain degree, will contribute to this. As far as I'm aware, extended peg heads and stringing through body can't really do much with the note itself, as the speaking length of the string runs from where it leaves the bridge to where it hits the nut, however I guess the extended B headstock would let you use a long scale B string giving you more options without going custom for yer strings. Hope that's enough info for you to get started, if you have any other questions though dude, just shoot. Cheers, Eude -
Bought a Wren & Cuff Pickle Fuzz pedal off Ieuan and couldn't be happier. Great communication, speedy transaction and a great guy. Thanks man! Eude

I'm in Alan, should be able to make either date too. I'm happy to give lifts from Edinburgh, but I'll be bringing gear and my car ain't huge... Also, would there be any merit in me bringing along a wee PA?
I'm up for it and can offer a lift to South Cumbrian folk. Peter
Excellent, can't wait to see your Harlot in the flesh! - Wow that sounds inappropriate! Cheers, Eude

Alan, that's an awesome idea mate! Don't think it'd be very easy to get anywhere in Glasgow or Edinburgh for "charity rates" on a weekend! Cheers, Eude

Awesome Simon! That is absolutely gorgeous! The Ebony top is to die for too, I think I might have to ebony up my next custom bass. Congrats dude! Eude
Heh, yeah that'll look the dog's danglies. All you need now are black anodised frets...
Can you get them?!...
mmmm ... think I'll order me one of those but fretless, unlined, and strung with LaBella black nylon tapes Andy
Ha, yeah I was thinking of ordering up some of those DR Black Beauty Strings to complete the look... Eude
What it does show as well is the links that Alan has with his suppliers. This not only means great materials and hardware, but bespoke pickups and preamp as well. Couple the background work that makes these elements available with Alan's ever-increasing skills as a luthier makes something that defines ACG basses.... ...and in the bass world getting your own definable character is a difficult thing to do.
Well put mate! It's getting closer to my pay review with work, so finger crossed I might have myself a wee ACG in the works soon. I noticed that you have exposed cores on some of your lower strings, how does that effect the open string? Oh and I'd be well up for a Glasgow Bass Bash too, I'm sure I could wrench myself over from the East Coast for such a glorious occasion Cheers, Eude
thats the first time i've seen the back of that singlecut, i always imagined it to be much the same as the front
Yeah, it would've been nice to be able to afford another fancy bit of wood, but I could only stretch to the one facing, plus it's only a wafer thing drop top... Eude

Geez Mark that bass is a belter! That is easily one of the nicest looking boutique basses I have ever seen in my life! It's up there with anything Fodera have ever produced. You must be one happy punter and credit to Alan's incredible luthiery too. Can't wait to hear some sound clips of it Now stop reading this and go play your new bass! Cheers, Eude
