The rule regarding other other manufacturer's products was brought in for fairly sensible reasons. When the EB forum was still in its early days, there used to be reasoned debate about replacement pickups, preamps, necks, etc. and there were no problems. The problem, as I see it, came when the forum grew. House forums often attract an obsessive clique of fans, and the EBMM forum was no exception. People would come on the forums and ask about replacement pickups and would be piled on by a bunch of fanboys who would tell them why they were wrong to want to adulterate a Stingray... and it would descend from there. Blocking discussion of other manufacturers' products has, I would imagine, prevented a fair bit of nastiness on the EBMM forums. And lets face it, there are plenty of other places where discussion of replacement parts is possible.
I'm not concerned with folks being picky about unrelated products, it's an Ernie's Balls Forum after all, I think it's awful that someone can't share a negative experience with a product and have it discussed rationally without being attacked...
Had enough now. Going to ask for full refund and leave it at tha. They have nothing in that's similar spec, just lower spec. Don't feel like accepting something I could have had 7 months ago so putting an end to this now.
Sounds like the best plan mate, rotten it's turned out like this, but at least you get your money back and somebody along the line loses a sale for Musicman, fingers crossed they can find the weak link. Oh, and I wouldn't "ask" for a refund, I'd insist dude, think you're being too nice for yer own good
So.... would you be ordering another one from a.) Darren at Bass Merchant and b.) Ernie Ball MM inc. ?
Clearly you're still gonna be a fan of MM basses Gareth, so is there another way of buying one, straight from the source? Maybe a trip out to the states with a wee souvenir for the way back?... Eude -
oh yeah it did, didnt end up with darkstars in the end, loads of problems with the darkstar guy dragged things out forever, got some awesome j pups in it instead, not even sure what they are but they're awesome!, im swapping the pup covers to vintage cream and ill get some shots up, since we already had a body routed for the darkstars ive given jon my jazz bass neck to make a sister bass to this with the pickups from my peavey T40 in.
Awesome mate! Can't wait to see the pics Eude

Too be honest, most of Jon's builds tend to take about 12 months, from what I've seen of late. Well worth the wait in every possible sense however. Just remember in the wise words of Mr Miyagi "Patience Danielsan, Focus Power". Eude
I think its more a case of not worth it as the posts will be deleted and the poster banned. Just a waste of time. Ive seen someone get told off by a mod just for talking about another manufactures strings and comparing them to EB's.
Regardless of Gareth's recent problems, that kind of crap is more enough to put me off Musicman as a brand, the company appears to be run by complete elitist arseholes. I used to think it'd be pretty cool to have a Stingray, it's certainly been on the GAS list for a long time, but this thread has convinced me that the sensible option would be to have something custom built to sound like a one, and pocket the change (of several hundred pounds)...
You could also try to PM 'Ming' on the EBMM forum, he's taken over from Pete Lumney. As for Grand W's advice, personally I'd steer clear from sending PM's to Sterling, or starting any threads on the forum. You've been on there long enough to know why.
I think it's awful that folks should be too scared to post anything on that Ernie's Balls forum slightly negative even with legitimate reason for fear of the repercussions from a pack of feral fanboys or how "the Führer" might react. Not a healthy way to do business, smacks a bit of Nazi Germany if you ask me... -

Oh, and I reckon you could probably get the MM sound, or close enough with 3rd party bits these days. Nordstrand or Delano make very good replacement MM pickups and John East makes MM style preamps. Most luthiers would be happy to work with those components... Eude -
Not wanting to point the blooming obvious, Gareth, regardless of the reaction you might get in the EBMM forum, I feel you should really need to let Sterling Ball know that somewhere along the line Strings & Things send you a moody bass. By telling us all here yes will get you a lot of support because a.) you're british, b.) we like you as one of our own and c.) we feel your pain. but all of the above is pointless because you are barking up the wrong tree and all our support won't get your bass sorted. For once go directly to Sterling Ball, he says he doesn't like pm's then send one to Aziah and ask her to present it to his attention appreciating that you are addressing him alone and not wanting to make a big scene in public in his forum which is one of the things he detests, if he has any decency he would get his wheels in motion and by next week Strings and Things will be begging at your door with a new bass. That is if you do it this way and not go to the forum and say "Outrage!! I have been sold a 3 legged donky!"
Brilliant brilliant advice. Do what he said
Who is this Jon and what is his website? Is he a basschatter? Hope you get your bass sorted out Gareth.
Well, Darren is being helpful and wants me to have a bass I want. I think even he may be shocked at the potential neck swap. S&T have offered a credit back (im guessing back to him) which means I can have a refund. Thing is, they havent offered anything else, like an apology, a phone call, an email...nothing. Not even a 'you can have another HH bass, at a discount'....nothing. I've dealt with them in the past and they have been very efficient so I have no idea what they are playing at now. New management? Who knows.
Take the money now, before creating any further stink, just to be sure you get everything you're due. Then regroup I reckon. -

I reckon that's enough to not bother with them anymore dude. You've got some great MM basses there, so I'd get a full refund and get yourself one of these >> http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/basses/JB/index.asp You know you want to, would compliment your collection nicely... P.S: If they'd have done this to me I'd be getting banned from the Ernie's Balls forum right now for telling everyone about it too. P.S.S: G&L need a new website, that one is sh*te! Just my 2p, Ewan -
Mother of toilet seat Hello Kitty inlay at the 12th fret? Looking good mate, can't wait to see what the surprise is too, unless I've already spoiled it... Eude
Now that is some lateral thinking! However, I have just defretted my P/J and I'm looking to keep this configuration for a while, but it has got my creative juices flowing, especially if I can purchase another similar P/J bass. And you're both right - a pickguard can cover a multitude of sins! I should know - I've dismantled my Squier several times Cheers, Ian
Right, I'll put today down as a success then. Can I go back to sleep now?... Seriously though, I reckon picking up a Squier P Bass and getting a bit of modding done is a good idea, if you go for the P Bass you can perhaps experiment a bit with different bridge pickup positions, i.e. 60's vs 70's perhaps? Eude
-
Of course!! And yes, I do have a P/J arrangement on a bass - but I dunno, there feels something lacking. Maybe it's the cheap-ness of the Squier, in that they've skimped on the quality of the pickups, because to me, they don't sound, well, terribly well-matched as a pair. Maybe it's also just my ears being completely shagged Otherwise, it does tick all the other boxes - maybe I could look at a series / parallel switch mod to the P pickup, and that would get me there perhaps. But I do like the look of the MM pickup - to me, it's much more 'manly' if you see what I mean - it's those exposed pole pieces, they just oooze 'rawk' Anyway, thanks for the replies so far chaps! Ian
You could always have your P/J bass routed to take a MM style pickup, assuming it's got a pickguard. You can use a pickguard to cover all kinds of horrors. If you don't like it, you can probably put it back as it was easy enough too... Eude
The Washburn Stuart Hamm bass has a humbucker in the middle and a jazz pickup at the bridge
Well done that man >> http://www.washburn.com/basses/signature-series/ Not sure where the best place to try one is however, not seen a Washburn in the flesh for a while...
I like the funky dance kind of stuff. Reckon that could sound wicked if you get the right musicians together. Id go for a female vocalist aswell.Think it would suit the music better. If nothing else itll be easier on the eye Think my favourite is bustin king cobra
Cheers mate I think a female vocalist would've been a good idea too, us bassists should be standing at the back anyway, perhaps behind the drummer... Hey you lot, in prep for starting to look for a new band or project down here in London, I thought it'd be cool to whack up a load of recordings on Sound Cloud as a kinda folio. Thought it might be cool to share them with BassChat. Anyway, here goes... Early music, mainly with School pals (I've got some even earlier stuff, but I'm not sure I can share it, a little too embarrassing...) >> http://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/early-music/ More recent tunes, from my time in Edinburgh >> http://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/recent-work-1/ Finally, some funky stuff with a couple of signed artists (most of it's 70's car chase music) recorded over the last few years >> http://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/electronica-dance/ Be gentle Hopefully I can get match fit again soon and start playing out and about, I do miss it.
Happily build you a totally made in England MiBass but doubt on the whole people would want to pay the price difference, sadly that's what we are up against these days and to be honest after working with our china factory for 10 years now the quality of our Chinese made products is so good would you want to pay a large premium simply to have made in England on it? If you do want to buy British we still make plenty of high end totally made in Essex products and offer a total custom shop service too...
Thanks for the reply mate. I know it's hard to find any "affordable" UK made gear these days, as it happens though, Ashdown being a British company is British enough to be considered "Buying British" in my book. Everything bar the manufacturing is British Eude
Probably the only thing on that amp that's British is the plug, and you can't even be sure of that nowadays.
Fair point...
