Playing with various pedals and onboard pres and I really enjoy the hi-fi but not sterile sound I get from the onboard East Uni preamp. nice preamp, tuneable bass and treble and semi parametric mids - it’s great! (plus active blend onboard) other than talk to mr east and mount one in a pedal, what else is there out there I should check out?

one obvious massive benefit of multi effects is that you don't have to know what you want before you buy it. Buy a good one, like a HX stomp or whatever the Boss equivalent and you can literally try EVERYTHING in any order and mess around with things. I doubt I would shell out for even a cheap reverb or delay pedal... cos it's not something I've ever been interested in and, well I tend not want to spend loads.... but have a multiFX and you can try ALL the reverbs, after different delays... why this is good is it's fun. And it also lets you work out what you actually like and need. In my case my elaborate patches for each song eventually got refined down to something so simple I got individual effects to do the same thing.

Ease of use, all the effects you could ever want, routing options, amp and cab sims - it’s all there in a small convenient package. The one downside is sometimes the interface and ideally using a computer to edit content. Individual effects with knobs for things are possibly easier to dial in - but it depends on the user. For instance @BigRedX has a workflow for his helix that works, I struggled to make my stomp workflow rewarding

You have the Jack out for fs 4 and 5 - so either a fs for that, or use it for an expression pedal. The di out uses a TRS to xlr cable, so if you need that one of them - ive my old one kicking around, along with the Cioks current doubler is you need either the inbuilt tuner is quite good. when I had mine that was the only pedal I used with an addition foot switch - didn’t need anything else… be prepared to send some time with it and don’t be surprised to use the amp sims and have the gain stupid low.

I think the ideal from a cost basis would be to breadboard and test a circuit, work on ways to improve or edit it- then make a small batch for friends/selling - I’m a graphic designer so the fun of packaging and coming up with a look would be fun too. Issue would be coming up with something original enough to make worth doing

Partly as a “I should try this” I designed and ordered some pcbs last year for a project. 10pcb cost as much delivered as a pint in a city. learnt a lot, made the mistakes etc but it was interesting even at low order numbers how cost effective getting the boards populated were- it made me wonder about squeezing some projects into 1590a size enclosures the main downside would be a minimum order number of 10 I think which would cause a whole heap of problems.

I’ve got one, it’s fantastic the blue one is aimed for guitars and doesn’t have the detune and has a pre delay. I guess the button must do something different too

It’s actually quite interesting how you see more and more “boutique” manufacturers moving towards SMD construction

I think if we get up to 100 resistors and 65 capacitors you have to be considering the TC electronics £40 version of that - with the added benefit of not being my shoddy soldering!!

Depends Aguilar and Sadowsky preamps are from a similar family design wise, the Sadowsky preamp is boost only at 40Hz and has been popular for a while... I've managed to use it without it being mush.

just had a tidy up. It's amazing the selection of random ICs I've collected. Any idea what to do with a handful of LF353?! Also found a LM4250 I bought to repair a stingray preamp but didn't need, and a MN3207 BB chip!

I think the zoom stuff has been hacked into so it can be controlled via midi but its not designed to be in the way helix is

PedalPCB have a boneyard edition of the warden which one of the experts modded the circuit to make it work better
