1. We do have funny ideas of downgrading and up grading. Past a certain point if the bass works then it works and it's price isn't really the same as it's value. One of greatest basses I have owned and really the only one I regret selling was a 1975 cimar jazz copy, cost me £70, worth not much more than that- but boy was it fun to play. I had a valenti for a while- lovely bass but not for me. For me the cimar was the upgrade.
 2. I don't think more gear is the answer. Turn down any compression first. if you are using a valve pre don't drive it hard at all. Then use the eq- you won't be 'too loud' across the board, you will be too loud in certain frequencies- learn to hear them. Get/build a wee parametric notch eq if you need one. The thing about humbuckers, as I guess it is more down to them than the active electronics, is that they have quite a wide fat mid- compare that to the thinner sound of a single coil. Used correctly that's not a problem but if you're not careful you can bludgeon too much of the space the other instruments need and sound 'too loud'.
I'm having some issues with an EQ I have designed. I have attached two files, the frequency response graphs and the schematic. It won't take long to see the issue on the 100Hz and other filters. Anyone got any ideas? Frequency response graphs can be found here A cracking discussion here! made it to page 12, time for bed now though!
PMed

 9. Well Basschat is amazing... it turns out the previous owner of the bass recognised it and gave me a heads up on some setup issues and deadspots that they have hidden with a high action. So for a overpriced bass it's now not one I'll be going for. Good news is that a few other folk have sent me PM's about their tokai jazzes- so we will see!
 10. what brand cheap copy is it? It's just some basses (like the Ryder or SX) that cost less than yours but folk rave about them. I would think a setup would be the first step before spending money- and setting up a bass isn't too different to a guitar. Also it it is the E string that the problem is on watch you are not hitting that harder with the right hand. Try moving the hand back slightly towards the bridge- it's a different tone but may suit
 11.
Yeah, there is slight concern! I could PM you a copy of the schem if you think you could offer insight.
I'm afraid I'm just an electronics bodger and wouldn't have a clue! Ask in the DIY effects thread- some real experts in there!
 12.
Try and knock them down a bit, but my thoughts are similar to the others, that bass has been playing away in your brain for 9 months now, you`ll regret it if you don`t buy it.
yeah i have that feeling... be a bit of a change in plans! need to sort finances and stuff out... and sell something to make space I think
 13. wooah that 100hz filter is crazy!
 14.
If its been there at least 9 months maybe they'll entertain offers?
it's worth asking, and there's a fella on the forum with one too (for a bit less) I love jazzes- I guess I question why I would need 3 basses, and sticking the ACG in the streamer and giving it the tonal flexibility to be an uber bass.... I guess i'm being cautious of spending money on another bass when in reality I can only play one at a time, and the upcoming move will mean more things to lug about- and mean I won't be playing for a while till I find new folk to play with....
 15. hmm not much thought here...
 16.
i don't think it's that heavy actually - less than I expected anyway. The controls are certainly not intuitive but with so many sounds possible it's only of little inconvenience. What I really can't believe is how cheap they are, this was made in the US - glad the Fender snobs dislike them as it meant a bargain for me .
you will really really quickly get the hang of them- they are really really versatile
 17. there are many pickup makers who can make pickups to size, Alan Armstrong comes to mind. But size wouldn't be my first question- that would be - what don't you like about the current ones and what more do you want?
 18. So... Last year I tried to buy a jazz bass, I bought a couple and then sold them quite quickly as they were not 'me'. There was a cimar I really really regret buying to do up for a friend too- when I say regret, I mean I regret giving him it! But eventually decided that I don't need 3 basses and am quite happy with the warwick streamer and the JV P bass. The streamer especially is brilliant, and feels and sounds good. I stuck a set of barts and a glockenklang pre in there over christmas. The pups are amazing- the pre worked less well. So the plan is to save the pennies and stick a new pre in there- with the ACG-01EQ in sight. But then part of me wonders if I would be happier with just the original 2 band? would the complexity annoy me after a while? Probably not, but it's a good question to ask. But I'm hesitating before blowing that much on a new bit of kit. (Actually the first bit of kit bar strings and strap locks I will have ever bought new and at full price) Yesterday I went into a music shop I went into about 9 months ago. Then I went into try the roadwork jazz bass which was getting such good reviews on here. Well I tried that, and actually most jazz basses in all the shops in the city in that period- and one stood out as the best by a long way- A 1980-81 Tokai Jazz sound- with a schaller 3d bridge added. Well yesterday, 9 months on I went back to the same shop- and tried it out again... and it's still great. It's not in perfect condition- it's not amazingly brilliant construction- but boy does it sound the part and feels amazing in my hand too. Effortless to play. Downside is it's listed at £550 - they may be open to bargaining but prob not. Part of me wants to use the preamp money to buy it. I don't have the space for too many so something would have to go (probably a 6string guitar) but I don't know. If I did buy it the original pre would go in the warwick- and at some point in the future I would build my own filter preamp in a box- I couldn't for the life of me design something like the ACG pre but a filter at a higher voltage I could do. Thoughts? advice? or brilliant tokai you want to sell me for cheap?

 21. the bass freq point is interestingly the same as the warwick 2 band preamp. they have the high at 2k not 1k but similar and not very common 'tight' grouping of eq points.

 23.
Thatnks for the sentiments, guys. Selling these could not have come at a mor opportune moment as I was in GuitarGuitar (Edinburgh) yesterday and saw this below. Sure, it's not bass content but I've been hankering for one for a while!
it's a guitar!
 24.
Cheap skate
ask nicely and you are 24 bits of metal closer to your first ACG
