1.
I've come to accept that I'm a bass nerd. I get great enjoyment out of the little differences, out of the different design philosophies, the differing concepts behind the different basses I have. I love them all, just in different ways because they're all different interpretations of the instrument I have a passion for. I don't see the point or nobility in rationalising having just one. I am comfortable having more than one bass. It's great, to be honest. I spent many years with just one bass, which I still have and that's great too. Tell me this, is your life going to be any worse off for having the JV as well as a kick ass Streamer? Hell no. Do you think the day might come where the raw power of the JV will excite you just as much as the finesse of the Streamer is exciting you now? So why think about moving it on? Some days only the JV will do, some days you'll just need the Streamer. Smile at how great your life is and learn to live with the burden.
don't worry, I'm not going to go down to one bass. Just remarking on the oddness of missing the wick meant I was considering it, which is an odd place to be. Two is a good number for me, I tried 3 a few times but quickly go down to 2 again. It gets silly after a while as to 'really' be worth trying a new 3rd bass I would have to potentially 'beat' one of the ones I currently have. I've passed on some bargins cos I know that they wouldn't compare. Anyway. maybe this is a silly thread, I just found that not being able to play a bass for a long time had an interesting effect to how I think of them.
 2.
Its actually resonance that does dead spots, the structure is resonant at that frequency and takes the energy from the string. Its like that thing when people say somehting is 'more resonant' when they mean 'less resonant'.
i think you're saying the same thing i was trying too. apparently the first helicopters kept flying into things, they found that certain resonances of the copter (given by the spinning of the rotas) were the same as the resonant frequencies of the human eyeball....
 3.
That's the same thing, just approached from the other direction surely? The stiffness in the structure is critical for the tuning of the string, if the wood vibrated substantially at low frequency you'd have too much interaction and pitch would wobble all over the place depending on how hard you held the neck! It would sound all weird and intermodulation-distortiony
apart from the weirdness I always thought thats what dead spots were? the resonant pitch of the wood and the string leading to cancellation or something
 4.
Because our wallets are bigger than our ears.
I'm asking as someone with a small wallet....
I can answer this one... The first wouldn't cost you a lot as is made with low cost labour, the second would cost you considerably more as is made by someone who needs to cover their overheads (& they might use better electronics ) and the third would cost even more due to shipping & customs & Warmoth parts actually work out pretty dear! Edited as I misread the 2nd Q.
But apart from cost.... imagine cost is irrelevant. And in this example we are ignoring cost. Fodera make a bass based on a fender jazz, as does mr shuker, Fender FMIC do, Cort make many, ACG does now too, as does overwater..... now if cost is irrelevant for this question... what is the difference between a good bass and a bad bass? Or put it anther way, I find a good jazz bass, say a good tokai jazz, what advantage would a custom builder bring to it? (or cheekily, take sadowsky who make bolt on instruments- what do they do differently in New York to FMIC in California?)
There's a lot to be said for setting limits. Wal did this with their mahogany bodied instruments and sycamore/hickory necks. They ended up with a very consistent product. ErnieBall/Musicman, Alembic, Celinder, Tobias and Ken Smith have too. Bass making is like cooking. You can add yeast, water and flour together consistently and get a relatively consistent but boring product...bread. Add the same ingredients but use wholemeal flour...or brown sugar...or brewers yeast to replace one ingredient. How much difference does that make? These are like woods. What if other flavouring ingredients were used, like onion, herbs or seeds? These are like electronics, pickups or strings. The important thing is to find someone who makes something consistently first, and secondly something that sounds attractive. So much of what I've tried has been inconsistent between instruments. I believe predictability is the most important quality for a bass guitar. Otherwise, go into a music shop and try something. If you like it, buy it. Don't expect any other instrument ever made in the history of creation to sound as good. You pays your money and you takes your choice but none of us are there to fund a luthiers' training.
there's a lot of sense spoken here Kiwi.
 5.
Your fingers.
So why do Mr sadowskys fingers basses cost a lot and my bits bolted together would not?
 6. So I want a bass. a bolt on bass. If woods used are negligible, and looks aren't that important...(for this example) I want a great playing and sounding bass.... imagine I'm already able to swap out pickups/preamps what would be the difference between an off the shelf fender jazz bass a custom built jazz bass type or a few bit's of wood from warmoth I've bolted together myself? What does make an awesome bass? or more what does a custom bass builder do, that me and my warmoth parts wouldn't
 7.
Hmmm, although I love the idea of having only one bass, the thought of being without a backup option should I need it for whatever reasons won`t go away, so I wouldn`t recommend it.
no, i don't think it was a serious idea- but for years the JV has been my main bass, and the fact i could imagine life without it is a bit odd.
 8. Odd thing I realised today.... firstly I've been fairly busy so playing less than normal, but after christmas I got a set of Bart pickups and glockenklang preamp for my streamer. Awesome I loved the pickups but the preamp did nothing for me at all (in this bass) so got moved on. I then saved up for an ACG preamp, then spent the money on an engagement ring then started saving again (you'll see more stuff go on sale soon, delay pedal next!) So since march my streamer has had no preamp in it.... as in theres no pots or anything and you can't plug it in. So when playing I've been using the P bass (often amazing, sometimes not a versatile) and the warwick has sat in my room and been played acoustically.... well the odd thing is how attached to it I've become, and love the unplugged tone of the thing and playing odd things and trying new techniques. Today I was even questioning that when I got it back in action, did i need a second bass, maybe I could sell the JV? which is pretty extreme but interesting how your relationship with these inanimate objects develops.
 9.
I already said about that earlier. But not being able to predict something isn't the same as that thing not existing. Edit: Here:
"Mr Foxen finds God"
 10.
Yup been guilty of that too. Then I did my own experiments (non of which will be scientific enough to be open for debate on an internet forum) and proved myself wrong.
Rich.... genuine question, to you with your luthier's hat on. Say I wanted a bass, and imagine we've got past the tone wood issue. Hmm so say I know I want Nordy pickups on the bass cos I like them. What else makes a good bass a god bass? Or, say you are making one, what extra do you, (or Shuker, or ACG, or RIM or Sei or whoever) that makes a bass 'better' than something I could bolt together from Warmoth or someone? What's the difference between a great great bass and a half good one?
 11.
Prices in $ and looking very much like a USA store... is that the case?
indonesia... off what looks like an indonesian version of ebay or something it looks like.
 12.
I am currently on the look out for a Warwick thumb NT 6 if anyone knows where i can get one at a "realistic" price, i have cash waiting. Cheers Paul.
rumour6 has a nice early one up for sale
 13.
2 more days left
till it gets sacrificed in fire?
 14. I love the fact that the Facebook people have just posted a post on "make sure you can see our posts" - which also tells everyone how to turn them off. If this was twitter i would say #shootingyourselfinthefoot
 15.
I've got an '87 JD Thumb (very shallow neck, NT, one piece bridge/tailpiece) and a 2000 Thumb, originally with the fat neck, that I've had reprofiled to JD proportions and defretted. I'm not parting with them, but I'm not using them much as I mainly use 5-strings these days.
jealous! (of the JD) must be great
 16. what an odd looking bass
 17. it's one of those basses that if had space and money I would!
 18.
There are 1000's of similar type lessons on the net. No need to SPAM a discussion forum, especially with your very first post.
I guess that was directed at the OP not me?
 19. dafty! you should have kept that P bass I sold you! Anyway Brick is a great guy so trade away in confidence folk!
 20. I wonder how many people signed up on a bass forum would have any interest in a lesson that takes you from holding your bass up to your first song...
 21. DVD and porno video?
 22. thing is apart from a few things I've always wanted to try (and have).... T40, jazz, etc... I've got great basses and find it's far better just to play the things than go window shopping. Most the audience can't tell anyway. I've prob had, I dunno two dozen basses come and go now, the ones that stand out are the T40, the Streamer I have now, the Cimar Jazz and an old Aria fretless I traded with Rasta. The JV is a bit special too. Now of the 5, 3 of them cost under £150 ish. Some of the basses that cost £2000 or so new came and went with little more than a shrug. The wick is a keeper, and the JV is too. At some point I'll get too worried about damaging it and move the JV on and buy something else, but meh, it'll probably be another P bass or a jazz or something. Better just to play the things
 23.
Ones I'd like to try but haven't yet: Warwick thumb
yeah good call, I've played one years back but wouldn't mind owning one sometime. I'm going to talk more about what I would like to own for a bit rather than basses I've no interest in... wouldn't mind trying Overwater ACG (though going to get one of his preamps for the streamer as the cheaper option) Stingray I'ld like a shot on a Yamaha TRB to see what the fuss is about, a good jazz bass, maybe combine that with the overwater to make it an overwater jazz... or probably a PJ, but a jazz with a P pup not a P with a J pup... No interest however in.... rickenbacker
There are loads, but the ones I'm keenest to try are Wal, Alembic and a Peavey T-40.
I think every bass player HAS to try a T40 once in his or her life. If I only had one bass till I died and it was a T40 I would die happy. Possibly of a hideous back injury but a great bass to try.
 24. depends entirely what you want doesn't it? There are some makers designs I just don't like (even if the makers are on here and great people who I would love to buy a bass from) or others who I love their work but have different ideas on the aesthetics than them (I'm an artist/designer) or some which will do a certain sound and not another....
 25.
Hi Luke, Who? - please excuse my ignorance... Is he like OBBM for cables? - I'll check out some of his posts... Thanks for that, Daf
http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/ He knows his stuff and is a nice guy, send him a PM maybe?
