Having owned and played so many different basses over the last 40 years, I've come to the conclusion that there's no rhyme or reason to this at all... Twenty years ago, I had a '66 Jazz, but I never really got on with it.. Had an 80s Tokai Jazz that I loved. Apart from playing a great sounding Warwick Streamer 5 string at the first South East Bash in 2007, I've never got on with the feel of the 3 Warwick's that I've owned. I also had 3 Stingrays over the years and never got on with the sound when playing them. Had 2 or 3 Wal Custom Mach 1s, including a 5 string, but didn't like them at all, yet loved the Wal Pro models that I've owned.. I've had a few budget Yamahas too - BB300, BB400 models - and really enjoyed them, but last year I quickly moved on a beautiful TRB5P that I bought here that I was absolutely convinced I was going to bond with when I bought it. Like I say, no rhyme or reason! It's been a real blast trying out so many different basses though..
I think that's the nub of it - no rhyme or reason. One of the nicest basses I should never have sold was a japanese jazz copy that cost me £45. Back then (all of 7 years ago) £45 was a lot of money so I justified it by buying it to do up "for a friend". The friend still loves it. The bass for me that started this thread is my very old BB1200 - utterly amazing instrument. Lightweight, smooth and even sounding across the fretboard... yet doesn't click with my playing style at all. I picked up the Stingray I built after playing it (Bart and my own DIYcopy of the 2 band preamp) - utter dog to play not fun at all - but the tone is there with my fingers. Not really sure what to do, maybe move the BB on - but it seems a shame as it really is such a nice instrument. Just not for my playing style... but then in a year or two my playing style and tone goals might have changed and it fits? Anyway I'll take it to practice tonight and see how we get on - it really really didn't work well the last time I tried it out so could go horribly wrong!
I'm not working as much as I'd like, but most of my time on Basschat is when I'm travelling to gigs, or waiting to play. I didn't resurrect this thread to bash Fodera's or even have other people bash them, I guess I was wondering if I should bite the bullet on a very high-end or custom instrument, or if I should get another good mid level bass which is replaceable or repairable if anything happens at a gig. I'm thinking a five string Precision and a Fretless Jazz would compliment my Stingray and Sandberg (Jazz) and would give me all the basses I need for any gig I'm currently doing, or would I be better off to sell what I have and get one super-bass. Edit to say I consider Musicman and Sandberg hight-end, but in comparison to Fodera they are mid-level at least in terms of cost.
I don't think you would be better with one "Super-bass" IMO with one exception to that... A selection of good basses are probably really good basses - that if you had no choice you would be quite happy playing and gigging for the next 20 years aye? At the moment the "super-bass" is only super cos of the reputation and the price - and it could turn out being a worse instrument for you than main bass you've currently got. so it's probably GAS talking - not logical sense... But - if you go to Bass Direct, or BasGear of Moffat Bass bash or somewhere and pick up a bass that is just amazing for you - and you can tell it works for you... and if you have to sell your current basses to afford it, but you know you would regret it if you didn't.... then do it.
-
Thing is - a hard working pro bassist who has the battered well played fodera that goes everywhere with them... Are probably not likely to be on basschat much!
-
Wow this topic took off! Reason for starting it is one of basses is an amazingamazing instrument - lovely to play ... But with my technique it just doesn't get played.... If I play with a pick or slap or something I don't do it sounds great... Just not with my playing style it seems
-
So there are good instruments and there are the really great ones - and it's hard to quantify what makes them great, but they sound good play good and have an evenness across the neck. Instruments you are lucky to own... Ever had one and just not clicked with the sound it makes when you play it?
What about the basses Leo designed at G&L. Is their version of a J and P a copy as it was himself who designed it in the first place?
improvement?
My Streamer Jazzman. I know hardly anything about it really.I was told on the Warwick forums this is possibly one of the very first Custom shop basses made. They were apparently around the shows like NAMM etc showing what they could do. I have no paper work of any kind with it i would like to know more so if anyone knows anything about it. Let me know. I've had it years now bought it off some guy on ebay for a stupidly low price (which was unbelievable and i'm still shocked). Im guessing its an ash body. AAA Birdseye neck and the top i'm not sure
When I asked about mine Hans said the mother of pearl truss rod cover was something they did for the special order custom shop editions right at the start... my 1985 custom shop bass, made in West Germany, may predate yours!

So you're a a manufacturer of quality printed mousemats. And a bit bummed no one uses mousemat anymore. So you make printed ones - targeted directly to your fender fan with the slogan "I love my fender bass" and then do you go and find photos of the iconic beautiful fender bass designs? do ye f..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FENDER-I-LOVE-MY-FENDER-BASS-GUITAR-MOUSE-MAT-/222009738317?hash=item33b0cfc44d:g:7hcAAOSwFnFV8CaP
I might hold you to that!

...which would have broadly the same effect as a sub-£500 category!
hehe
I for one wholeheartedly agree with Twincam. I hardly ever look at the Basses For Sale section any more because it seems to be predominantly high-end instruments - most of which are for sale from mainland EU countries. There's seldom anything within either my budget or scope of interest any more. For the same reason, I haven't sold anything on here in several years. The fee isn't an issue; simply the fact that it feels like my modestly priced, niche-interest MIJ stuff would inevitably disappear under a mountain of ten grand Foderas! A sub-£500 section would be incredibly helpful & would do nothing to interfere with the marketing of higher-value instruments. It would only help make the Marketplace more accessible - and probably busier. Jon.
Feel free to PM a list!

A Tale of Two Rippers - Gibson Vs Shaftesbury
LukeFRC replied to AndrewJordan's topic in Bass Guitars
Nice find! Interesting that they have the string through body option where the Shaftesbury does not. I don't know what kind of wood Linden is but the body of mine looks like Ash.
Linden is basswood/lime -
They are not trendy at all but there's something about the design of Warwicks I love.
Yes and no. Yes, that's typical of a commercial cab. No, it's not a good target for a DIY cab. Using tens a 50-55Hz f3 and 35-40Hz f10 is a reasonable target, easily achieved. You'd need to go around 40-45L per driver, but the external dimensions will only be a few cm larger than 25-30L per driver, and with properly braced 12mm plywood construction and neo drivers the weight won't be bad. The Deltalite II 2510 is my go-to electric bass ten.
. You will save yourself (the OP) a lot of time and money if you stick "bill fitzmaurice simplexx " into Google and buy some plans....

LukeFRC replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
In fairness, factory fretless ones aren't as common, so probably worth £23.45 more. My "odd bids" always end with £6.66. Dunno what that says about me. J.
Useful info for anyone ever bidding on quality japanese basses on eBay
