1. Ok so the honeys are on, first impressions (all pizz... bow tomorrow) they are a little louder than the silver slaps which for me is a good thing live, as my bass is a little quiet but records superbly well... The bass end is a little lighter and less growly than I'd like but I can imagine that suiting certain sounds. The mid range is all full and strong and I like the tone very much. around D to F on the G string gets a bit twangy for my taste but that's a personal thing, I prefer more thump than wang (note the technical terms) In terms of tension they are similar in my mind to the super silvers so I look forward to a gig where I play in anger to work that resistance and see what happens, I do find that I can over blow the silver slaps sometimes so the super silvers were an improvement on that on certain gigs. My gigs this week are on the ply bass that lives in the band van (which has E A silver slaps D G super silvers) so I won't get to use the honeys on a gig until next week but will report on that and pass them on then... Any questions feel free...! Jake
2. Hi Guys, Yes I have the Honeys, am going to get them on there tonight and will report asap as to their performance, and i will be able to compare with Silver Slaps which I hae on currently and super silvers which I have on my ply 'lives in the band van' bass
3.
Eliza Dolittle , her bass player uses upright almost exclusively.
Indeed. And I played DB on a track on her first album...
4.
Those polystyrene cases are fine for traveling in the back of a van but there's no way I'd put my bass on a plane in one. If you absolutely must fly with you bass put it in a Stevenson.
+1 I just try at all cost to avoid flying with a DB these days. I used to use a Stevenson all the time to fly but with security the way it is now it's a nightmare.... avoid avoid avoid
5.
Great stuff and well done for taking your lad along as well. Brilliant experience for him.
Indeed, on the way home he told me it was the best day of his life!!
6. I'd love to try a set of Honeys Daf. I already have Silver slaps on and love them. Jake
7.
Jake, does Marcus Bonfanti have any involvement with this guy? I've seen his name crop up before through conversations, friends of friends etc.
Yes mate, Marcus was on the session yesterday, what a lovely guy and player, and yes we discussed the fact that we both used to live in Liverpool...!
Superb pics by the way, what I'd do to record in somewhere as prestigious as Abbey Road!
I'm a very very lucky boy and I know it.
8. Another days recording at Abbey Rd... much fun was had, I took my son along to the session he's a very keen 13 year old drummer and the artist very kindly asked him to play some cymbal rolls for the track I was playing on, he excelled and did me proud...! he got paid and will get an album credit. I said to him, your next gig will have to be on Mars to top that!! Me on upright (No idea why the rotation is as it is... it wasn't as I was uploading!!) My boy at the desk Him doing his stuff The artist Noah Francis and Kelly Le Roc (bvs)
9. I do have a spare somewhere... Pm for details
10.
If you do it right you can get a rebate from your day to day earnings.
this having a self employment as well as a job makes a difference to allowances as your gigs are considered business, if as you say you don't make profit on gigs then you can show that as a net loss or break even, which can result in a tax rebate from your PAYE tax liability...
11. core strength, is all I have to add.
12. I looked through Chris's portfolio today, the list of albums was like looking through my early record collection!!!
13. A good producer will help you be at your most comfortable, and listen to where you sound best and should have a demeanour that helps you feel good about whatever you end up playing. You should be flexible and have no preconceived ideas, listen with open ears and go for what suits the track best. I'm recording (actually recorded rehearsals) here this week: http://basschat.co.u...lympic-studios/ The producer is a legend!!
14. When my kids were young I had a 14 day away limit, I was lucky enough to have a stable gig (which I still do) that paid the mortgage and have done various other freelance sessions gigs and bits of teaching, but my main source has always been that one gig. Luckily the band leader, like me, has 3 kids so the rule suited him too. Now my youngest is 9 I am happier to go away for longer as I know that not only will they be ok with it, but they like what I do. I'm hoping on some touring in the not too distant future and I'm starting to get involved in more freelance work than before... I have quite a few observations about what it means for family life so feel free to PM if you want more thoughts. I have never missed a mortgage payment, never run up debts and have always bought my cars outright, I moved from Manchester to the South East 7 years ago and have survived very well on a musicians wage, although in the past 5 my wife (formerly a singer hopefully soon to get back into it) has started a music group with pre school kids business which is doing very well, so well in fact that we have started up in a neighbouring district with a staff member. You can do it if you want it, but young families will not tolerate being under funded and left alone for long periods so think hard about the balance you would strike and be sure that you would actually be in work... the last comment requires a wide skill base in a shrinking world of work.
15.
Thats cool Jake - although I thought Olympic Studios was being turned into a private cinema?
That's right Clarky, the large room upstairs is indeed, we are in studio 2 which Virgin had kitted out in the 80s, Chris started work at Olympic in 1967 so is part of it's history (he told me he just missed Hendrix) the chap that owns it is very sympathetic to the history of the building (it was originally a cinema) so is seeing how things develop while it's being refurbished... it's a fingers crossed... hope for it to become an inevitable, irresistible future for the studio, I feel very lucky to be part of it!
16. I am doing a week of rehearsing with an artist that is releasing in August, we are lucky to have the use of Olympic in Barnes where legendary producer Chris Kimsey has set up (he worked there with the Stones and a massive list of others) It's great to have the rehearsals being recorded to such a high standard, Chris is making it sound awesome from the off, so it's a dream to play. main room from control room my bass corner the drums are in a tent... sound awesome, with the fab Andy Treacey, groove king extraordinaire Our first gig is Hop Farm festival on the same day as Dylan... looking forward to that one!!
17.
ME!!
Excellent!!
18. Platinum pro is fab, never used the other but if it doesn't have phase cancellation it would be a far inferior buy in my view.
19. whatever you think of the band the music or the bassline... He plays it very well, good solid time and I think a good feel too.
20. Mid side is also good for a nice image for drums if you have switchable mics or one condenser, one ribbon!
21. I can't help just having an overriding feeling that their achievement is great, so whether or not I like it is actually immaterial, they are playing to very high standards and clearly having a pile of fun doing it.
22. I would hope that someone here takes this opportunity, I would imagine it to be great fun. Good luck in your search, I will ask about a bit too as I know plenty of pro players.
23.
I spotted it soon after it was posted (before anyone had replied) , my attention was drawn to the word BATH because it's near me.
My mistake then...
24.
It does say (BATH) in the title. How often do you play? How far do you travel? How much £££? Some idea of repertoire would be helpful.
I don't think it did when I posted...
