I hate to say this but I just wouldn't anymore. Since 9/11 it has been hellish. I have probably made 30+ flights with a stevenson case and even before the added security it was a living hell. Plus you are talking anything up to £500 in excess baggage (I'd be surprised if you could get it in at less that 40Kg in a flight case) Best of luck if you try. Personally I would hire a bass in the destination country.
Did that website ever get done, Jake?
It's getting closer Bilbo, just a few more pics and some blurb to complete, as always I'm busier than expected with doing some production work and recording... I will get on to it very soon and it will have the addition of a production page as an old pal and I have set up as a team... watch this space! -
One of my students has a CV precision, it's a fab bass sounds and plays just like a precision should.

Cutting through the mix - I believe I have found the problem
jakenewmanbass replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
In all seriousness, bands that sound great are ones that understand the sound stage and can play to a room, if you fill a room with low end from all sorts of sources it will sound like a room full of low end... awful. You need a proper dialogue where everyone understands how they should sit in the mix... So in truth it's not your fault, but in my experience bass players tend to put overall sound above their own, those that don't mostly sound rubbish -
Cutting through the mix - I believe I have found the problem
jakenewmanbass replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
Most peoples understanding of frequency range in a room is seriously wanting, I work with 2 guys that have conversations like this.... "how does the guitar sound out front?" "it's a bit toppy" "ok I'll put some bass on it then" CLANG that's the sound of me hitting him in the face with a shovel. You need 4 things: 1. a length of straw, about 12 inches with barley attached at the end, 2. a well rehearsed west country accent 3. a small tractor. 4. a shotgun In the sound check jump on your tractor with straw in corner of mouth, drive across the stage and point the shotgun in the guitarists face, and in your best Chippenham drawl bellow... GET ORFF MOI FREQWANSEE.... If he refuses, shoot him in the face and hang him at the back of the stage as a warning to the other guitarist -

I'd be happy to do this via Skype, my ears are pretty good... -
Prince is undoubtedly in my top ten most jaw dropping gigs of all time, I saw him at Maine Rd in the early 90s, I was absolutely face melted by the musicianship and level of performance, all wrapped up in very heavy grooving, massive showmanship and a healthy sprinkling of jazz sensibility.

Bonnie Raitt sweet forgiveness She just has the most incredible delivery... soul, style, and totally convincing with a lyric -
Arnie is a very well respected player on the London scene

I'm another in the camp of not really liking playalongs... I think you should be able to carry the sound of changes alone, so a walking bass line can, if desired allow the listener to follow the changes with no other instruments playing, (one can also choose of course to make the path less obvious) and I agree with Joe that playing along, whilst perfectly fine to do, is not discovery and study in quite the same way. The only caveat for me is that this is all just opinion and different folk like to discover methodologies that suit them best. As for getting the sound in your ears... for me the best way to do that is by immersing yourself in the piece, either alone or by listening to others perform it. All the best with the book Joe!

funnily enough I've been recording Jo Burt for a couple of weeks, he lives in Sherborne, myself and Andy Treacey (fab drummer) are producing and playing on an EP of Jo's material, he gigs in the area, a very distinguished bass player himself he has toured with some top acts like the Troggs, Sabbath and Tom Robinson to name a few. I will mention to him that you're in the area, he now plays guitar and sings his own songs, some damn fine material too..! -
Very good, now we both look like arses!
I'll have you know I'm both an arse and a pedant... don't forget the pedant!!!
-
Yes, I know... 'Who?' is one of his better-known compositions.
I figured you were joshing but took it as an opportunity to make the point a little more firmly
-
'Who?'
A great writer from the American songbook era... popular around 40 years before 1960 or thereabouts

I haven't read the entire thread but I do generally think it's a bit counter productive to be derisory and critical of people for what they don't know as it creates an atmosphere of piousness, people will discover things on their merits, many kids don't know who McCartney is simply because he is not in musical vogue currently... can you call to mind all the music heroes for the 40 years prior to your teens? I doubt it very much... do you even know who Jerome Kern is? Lighten up, let people discover, and don't criticise their lack of knowledge, because by doing so you are simply cementing it's continuance.

606 club is a great hang for musos, free entry and reduced drink prices if you are a musician, and some of the country's finest players often having a relaxed play down there. Its on Lots Rd in Chelsea just off the Kings Rd
akg 404. I wouldn't generally use a condensor for live use. They like to pick up everything. a sure sm57 would be fine i would have thought.
Not much happening below 70 hz tho
-
The issues with using a condenser live revolve around just how much will leak in as they are quite sensitive, so you will also be amplifying nearby sound sources. For DB my view is 'impractical'

It's called the law of diminishing returns and is a very well established principle...

I have 3 recommendations 1. OBBM, because they are good value 2. OBBM because they are very well made 3. OBBM because Dave is a lovely bloke. Seriously.... Dave has recently launched 'Rockwire' I have a few of his cables all built to spec and they are as good as any top pre made cables but for less money.
