1. You're playing at a university ball in unbearable heat after a rush from a daytime gig, burst into the first number in front of 2000+ students who want to learn lindy hop and through the house PA (which would be fitting for Motorhead) can be heard the sound of what is apparently an incoming shell but turns out to be my bridge slipping from place slamming the pick up into the body at terminal velocity. (I did manage to get it back in place before the end of the number tho)
2. You arrive at a gig in the Isle of wight to discover that the band bass (which lives in the van) and has recently been on a plane (used by another player ) has had it's neck part company with the body. A few phone calls to a local music shop and I was using an EUB kindly lent to me by a guy who lived 1/4 mile from the gig... (I did give him something for his trouble)
3. You get to Germany to play a gig with a supplied bass to find it has been borrowed from the Hamburger Symphonika and at last valuation was placed at 60,000 euro
4.
You arrive at the gig to find the ceiling on the stage is one inch above your head and your bass is too tall to be played upright.
This happened to me when I went aboard a Thames river boat cruiser to play for Alan Aykbourn's wife's 50th... I had to sit down...
5. I have a trio rehearsal on thurs and we are aiming to have some electronica based ideas laid down to play over (of our own making). Anyone have any experience of these things, I just want to try something out at first.
6. Also learn to understand what a note means to a chord, and then to a sequence of chords... this is a wider subject that has many possibles, best done with a tutor...
7. Anything Ray Brown did, a master of swing and joyful feeling coupled with great note choice and colossal variation. It's a lot to do with feeling, it's a lot to do with momentum, it's a lot to do with being harmonically interesting and inspiring to your band mates, it's a lot to do with having a big open selfless strong hearted approach to being the backbone of the band. Listen to chord changes very very closely, try to imagine ways in which you might make it feel good to go between them. Be bold with your statements, playing roots with a really good feel is the best starting point.
8. Had this taken recently for a band promo
9. I make a living playing music, and that often involves playing in a studio, often creating basslines for a song. My view is to start with the absolute bare minimum when routining songs, literally just marking out the chords, then when the producer asks for a bit more it legitimises my input. I always put the song first before any 'lick' I might want to play so I figure, if it isn't adding it's detracting, so drop it... I will listen back to the routine takes and when we are tracking for real I have worked out what I'm going to do where... It's also something that you work out with the other players.
10. There is only one available judgement of level as far as I'm concerned and it involves the use of ears... if it sounds good, it is good. How you get to your level is a secondary consideration. People may differ in what they like but that's entirely subjective.
11.
Db on a five string High C is has all the benefits of Ab on a four
swine!!
12. If you can live with Db you're doing it wrong... Ab has the momentary relief of a major 7 open G and cheeky flat five and flat 2 side slips... all open strings. Db is across the break for similar moves... I urge you be more varied in Db and report back with bleeding tendons. Also Db is a beautiful ballad key.... (chelsea bridge and other Strayhorn beauties) Hold those crotchets longer I tell you!!!
13.
Sorry to say there is no good resources other than a tutor... With the vids you are only going to gather information on how to use the bow.. Whereas a tutor will be able to tweak any queries you have... Just pay.. as its all an investment... You can buy books and watch vids but end of the day you are going to need solid guidance to make a good sound. Goodluck!
This. For that moment when you have someone who really knows, stood in front of you saying: YES! thats IT.... Not available in video format.
14. Ab and Db are a workout for sure, think of it as strength training... Keep good form, learn to be energy efficient.
15.
Looks like a lot of fun Jake! What are you working on?
Some album tracking for a chap called Noah Francis. It's great fun, superb musicians!
16.
Is that studio 3 (The one upstairs?) or the newer penthouse studio? Agree with Kiwi about the catering, had a nice meal in the crossing restaurant.
Yep 3...
17.
Did you part take of in house catering? I know the catering manager.
Yep, lovely!
18. A few pics you guys may find interesting, A couple of days recording at Abbey Rd, with Chris Kimsey producing, Andy Treacey on kit, and Paul Stacey on gtr there are more fab musicians not in shot but this is the rhythm section room, Paddy Milner is off in a piano room. It's a great band! Andy doing his thing. Chris and Paul My bass off duty while I drink tea... note the OBBM leads into gas cooker and my PJB is doing a fantastic job in the cupboard!!
19. Swinging as well as steady... great! Nice feel from the drummer too... Tempo is about being match fit and relaxed, tension makes you tire more quickly.
20. Thanks Barrie Hi Derek, it is indeed a small world. Les is one of my all time favourite players, and a dear friend. I reckon you'll like Hampshire, it can be warm and sunny and there is some really lovely countryside, and close enough to London (well, all the SE really) to make gigging about really easy. Look forward to hearing from you.
21. I'd recommend ummm... .... Me! But then I don't feel too bad about the self promotion because so would these guys... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/6270-jakesbass-jakesbass-and-thrice-jakesbass/
22. Hi Phil, I'm a mate of Andy Treacey, I came to your house to pick up a washing machine and dishwasher with him a few weeks ago Nice to see you on here Jake
23. bargain I'd say... edit: just seen you're going to have some lessons... good thinking! Invaluable especially on DB
