I prefer new strings for recording. it's easier to take the zing away post recording than it is to put it there. On the other hand, a month old is actually fairly new for me too!

There is always one, yep. Personally, One person telling me I'm too loud for their personal preference wouldn't bother me in the slightest. My pleasure comes before that of the audience. I'm not a professional, even if I try to behave as professionally as possible at a gig. If you are too loud, surely somebody who had more authority (or perhaps control of a sound desk) would have done something about it! I had somebody point out every mistake I made on a gig the other night though. Which is a bit different, as it's something that I DO care about! It annoyed me a bit as I feel it's a bit rude to do that... But all I could say to it really was 'yeah i know!' because, to be honest, i DID screw up a few notes

It does seem as if they are putting themselves before the children's needs (or indeed that of the rest of the band!) It's an awkward situation indeed, and I would not want to be the guy who had to have a word with them about it. But it's got to be done. It's not just yourself who's losing out on this after all. If you get a hostile reaction it just shows that it's time to leave and do something else, and a bloody shame if they don't heed your words and start thinking of their kids' wellbeing more.

Whereas things like carrot cake, or ANYthing with chocolate in it have to go with coffee! We could also extend this into the biscuit world! ... Like, have you ever dunked a rich tea into a cup of coffee? Ergh!! -

[/quote] I didn't use them at any extreme length, and i'm hardly a compression expert... but they're actually very good! I mostly played with the M Comp (EBS Multicomp model), and 160 comp which is the DBX 160a model. My favourite is the 160comp which seems the most transparent. When I have my usual settings most of the compressors on the B3 get kind of squashy, and you can really hear the pumping and swelling, but it still sounds very natural, and I didnt feel much if any loss of tone. Still, I'm keeping the Aguilar as it is still noticeably more transparent at extreme settings like I use... Also I like to have the comp first in my chain, before the drive effects, which i'm still using 'real pedals' for. And the Zoom is last in the chain I would be more than happy to use the compressors on it if I had to though. I'm rather picky when it comes to sounds, and with enough tweaking this little box is a miracle worker! Never thought I would say that about a multi effects unit

[/quote] Briefly looked into the science of the vertical stacking thing, as as far as sound displacement goes it's certainly a much better use of the speakers! 4x10s (or having any 10 inch speakers stacked horizontally) kind of makes the sound more directional, so if you move off axis you get a loss of tone. Still... when i'm in the range of the speakers it sounds better to my ears. And I play for ME! -

[/quote] Thanks again for the taking the time to add some input dude! I've considered vertically stacking 2x10s but it didn't quite have the same low end as one big 4x10. Probably not scientifically justifiable but that's just my experience! I like the weight of the 4x10 and the size is more than manageable... I just wanted a 2x10 for smaller jams and rehearsals, which I could stick ontop of the 4x10 at gigs so i'd have the same sound, but more headroom, and closer to my ears! I guess I'll have to find someone who doesn't mine me borrowing, and caning their cab so I can try it out for myself! -

[/quote] The 4x10 is spec'd as having 103dB sensitivity and 800w RMS, and the 2x10 says 101dB and 400w RMS. With my 500w head I won't be overloading the cabs, I just wondered if I would be able to achieve the same sound but louder than just the 4x10 on its own, or if id be paying a few hundred quid just to have more to carry? I'f only Markbass made 16ohm cabs! -

I used to always get so fatigued during gigs as I had to play extra hard to cut through with the right authority, and is have to concentrate super hard on keeping my levels constant. When switching from aggressive finger style, to tapping, this is nigh on impossible! Compression is always the very first process my signal has, before any actual amplification or effects. I like to start off as close to perfection as I can before I start messing with it!

I still love the look of the RedSub 2x10s. It's like if Markbass came with more colour options!

Sometimes it sounds good, sometimes it doesn't. Technical ability is usually learned before the concept of taste. I can certainly admit to being an example of that! Took me a few years until I realised that most of my favourite players actually 'get their cock and balls out' quite rarely in songs, and play what suits the song rather than what sounds hardest to play!

Not really a hilarious story... but I used to be in a female fronted Led Zeppelin meets early Metallica style band with the odd proggy riff in 7/8 or 15/16 thrown in here and there... Nothing hard to follow or anything!... Anyways we auditioned this drummer who seemed really keen. He was also very confident in his abilities and mentioned how he was a drum teacher in almost every sentence. However as soon as it came to actually playing any of the riffs, he absolutely refused to play in anything other than 4/4, despite us showing the riffs to him in super slow-mo and exaggerating where the accents were supposed to be, along with all the rest of it. It probably took about 10 - 15 minutes just to work out a decent beat for the first riff, before he told us we were 'just trying to show off' by playing a riff in 7/8, and then spent the rest of the audition trying to rewrite all of our songs so they would be easier for him to play with the same beat all the way through We never spoke of him again...

A lot of it has to do with your particular playing style, or the gear you're using it with! Some stuff simply doesn't go. I have played many fantastic pieces of kit that have sounded and/or felt awful in my hands. Musicman, Warwick, TC Electronic, Boss, Digitech, Yamaha, just to name a few!
