Aria SB600/4 Fretless (lined) ... too late !!

.."Also debuting in 1979 as one of the DMZ Customs was the DMZ4000 bass. At first, it sported a fatter bulbous body like the DMZ2000 and 3000 guitars. It also had a mini-pickguard in the middle of the body that held a passive split-coil Dimarzio P-bass pickup. Controls on the early version were 1 volume and 1 tone knob and face-mounted jack. This first mach was availble in black(maple body), natural(maple body) or walnut/maple combination. Later that year, the 4000 lost it's pickguard and gained an active EQ and Dimarzio Dual Coil pickup instead of the passive model used on the earlier version. It gained 2 switches, one for power and one for coil tap. Around this time, the 4000 was planned to be dropped and the DMZ4001 was to take over. The 4001 was basically the same bass as the later 4000 version but had only one coil tap switch. Both the 4000 and the 4001 initially had the fatter body but was streamlined down to the thinner-horned, sleeker body like the DMZ1000 guitar. Color options remained the same throughout the run. Necks were standard aluminum with dot inlays and, like the rest of Kramer's alum. neck basses, had the fretless or half fretless option and some with no dots. Basically, if it has a pickguard, it's a 4000 no matter what. The deciding factor of the non-pickguarded models come down to the time frame the model came out in. Although the 4000 and 4001 is listed as having active curcuity, there are several examples of non-active, non switching configurations on both models. The 4000 run was ended about the time the 4001 came out with very little overlapping time. Both models at different times sported passive and/or active electronics. For a bass from 79-81 (?) it's in pretty remarkable condition. It all looks original but not sure of this (and would appreciate any comments from those who might know these Kramers better. Instrument only, but will be very well-packaged/boxed.

This was - or became - something of a project bass (when I discovered that the original pickup wasn't working fully). Tried for an original but hard-to-find and opted instead for a Bartolini W4CBC - Classic series. Some stock photos/information etc. here:- http://www.matsumoku.org/models/ariaproii/bass/sb/sb.html This is an 82 model with 3-pc. Maple set-neck, 24 fretlines, padauk-red tinted body (body is maple), brass bridge and nut, rosewood 'board, 1x Vol, 1x Tone + coil-tap switch. The bass plays and sounds great but there's a distinct loss of volume when switching to SC - and the HB just sounds better anyway: not sure if this is the pickup (mis-match with Aria electronics?) or my wiring?!.. TBH, once I got it working well in HB I just didn't want to mess around any more (!). So it might be solve-able. I did think of epoxy coating the f/board .. but the rosewood and FL tone is just too nice as it is. But I did change the rather bright/fullgloss finish to a more subtle satin finish,. No major marks or dings, but a few smaller ones here and there. Comes with an OK gig-bag (hardcase might be hard/er to find as the body is big). sold

Familiar Vigier in Larne / Lichfield
eubassix replied to eubassix's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Update: email from Merv Spence (see link in Post #1) today. This is now chronologically not correct in terms of 'the saga' (see Items Wanted / Help - Lichfield) but as it's topical thought it best to add:- My brother in law has just called me and I just had to laugh as you must have been waiting on this to appear for weeks David which is why I did not use my own account (*1). I would rather give the bass away to charity than sell it to you man. James has contacted Ebay and we will provide them with all the information required to reinstate his account as I am away and not that bothered. I also believe you placed a couple of offers? you should have collected it when you won it (*2), as it was a great deal. *1: no longer registered *2: for 60 days the bass was not available for collection by either DHL or local BC members. -
Familiar Vigier in Larne / Lichfield
eubassix replied to eubassix's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
This is interesting - looks like a great deal of thought was put into the description before commencing the auction (?) :- The seller has revised the following item information: Date Time Revised Information 18-Oct-10 19:49:54 BST Description 18-Oct-10 19:51:52 BST Description 18-Oct-10 19:53:36 BST Description 19-Oct-10 08:30:44 BST Description 19-Oct-10 08:32:44 BST Description 19-Oct-10 08:35:37 BST Description ... anyway, I couldn't resist a speculative bid/offer: all 3 offers up-to-and-including £599 were immediately rejected, so he's set a lower limit >£600 -
This bass :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-Vigier-4-String...=item3f04139d75 is the same instrument/seller as in this case:- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry993102 Could be a good buy if you're local (to Lichfield, not Larne!) and can inspect/try/collect and get with a decent offer. I won this bass on 1/8/10 but the seller kept my £640 (winning bid) until I managed to get it back through ebay/PP on 29/9/10. Full of excuses and BS and messed not only me about, but a couple of BC members who kindly offered to collect the bass on my behalf; seller (at that time 'parachutemusic' - No Longer Registered) was always too busy, not there, not available ....

This is a bass which I've had for some time and, whilst I found/find it a bit less of a handful than the Celinder 6 (!), I don't really have the time (nor patience) to spend developing. It was originally a proto-type six (6) string Bass Guitar from Marshall (John Marshall / USA) Custom - used only in the shop for customers to try out. From the links below you can see the new basses recently built from this model. It has an Alder two-piece body and a Five-piece neck made from Walnut/Mahogany/Maple/Mahogany/Walnut. It has a 20" radiused Wenge Fretboard with a very slim, nice profile. The pickups are G&B Passive six string Jazz Style. It originally had Two Volumes and One Tone Control - I found this a bit limited and have upgraded with a full 3EQ system which has added greatly to the overall tone(s). I need to add some more photos of the bass as it is now (i.e. 5 controls). It is strung through the body. The Tuners are open back high quality and are quite close on the headstock, allowing for a narrow headstock shape (guitar-style - I think John makes more guitars than basses, form the website) with the "M" Script logo. It has Two Dual Action Truss Rods. Weight is 9.5lb The Bass plays nicely - with the design and 34" scale it works well as a 6 string bass, which isn't something of a monster, but could also be strung as a tenor or tuned differently for chord work. There are a few small scratches from the shop. Also a couple of scratches on the neck heel but for all practical purposes it is new/excellent overall. Some specs.: 34" scale. 2.125 (2&1/8th)" nut width. 2&7/8th" at f.24. String spacings: 8.5mm (nut) , 13.5mm (f.24) and 16mm spacing on the saddles. As you can see from the links, the new basses (6, 5 and 4-string) are based on this model but are far more exotic (and expensive) and c. $2k. Should also be some links (within the site) to other basses and basists using them.
I'm sure Modulus will be able to provide the parts, they're only spares! They must have a few sitting around!
I have known some Co.(s) - generally the smaller ones - who have been helpful and very generous in sourcing and replacing parts / small components. No experience with Modulus (... anybody else?...) but doubt if they'll want to provide the tuners (and bridge - if it's theirs) FOC.
It would look so smart with black hardware!
yes, I'd agree with that: not sure if the original bridge/tuners (in black) are available and what they might cost (?!) - bridge might be easy, but the tuners are stamped ' Modulus Guitars'.

Looks more like birdseye maple to me (front & back). If the neck, body and backplate don't match, sounds like a combination of at least 3 previous Wal's. Sounds like a strange thing to do to a Wal or three, but I guess in 25 years a lot can happen. I know the price of 'original' Wal(s) have skyrocketed in recent times, but if you're patient and Watchful, some reasonable ones do seem to come along (not that I bought this myself!):- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT .. although I think this might well have gone higher, had the seller bothered to post some decent photos and a less bizarre 'description'......

Not sure if this has been listed before (or if this is the right place) .. but get this recently from a friend/bassist in the USA and found it amusing:- Beyond the Bass Clef: The Life and Art of Bass Playing by Tony Levin In the beginning there was a bass. It was a Fender, probably a Precision, but it could have been a Jazz - nobody knows. Anyway, it was very old... definitely pre-C.B.S. And God looked down upon it and saw that it was good. He saw that it was very good in fact, and couldn't be improved on at all (though men would later try.) And so He let it be and He created a man to play the bass. And lo the man looked upon the bass, which was a beautiful 'sunburst' red, and he loved it. He played upon the open E string and the note rang through the earth and reverberated throughout the firmaments (thus reverb came to be.) And it was good. And God heard that it was good and He smiled at his handiwork. Then in the course of time, the man came to slap upon the bass. And lo it was funky. And God heard this funkiness and He said, "Go man, go." And it was good. And more time passed, and, having little else to do, the man came to practice upon the bass. And lo, the man came to have upon him a great set of chops. And he did play faster and faster until the notes rippled like a breeze through the heavens. And God heard this sound which sounded something like the wind, which He had created earlier. It also sounded something like the movement of furniture, which He hadn't even created yet, and He was not so pleased. And He spoke to the man, saying "Don't do that!" Now the man heard the voice of God, but he was so excited about his new ability that he slapped upon the bass a blizzard of funky notes. And the heavens shook with the sound, and the Angels ran about in confusion. (Some of the Angels started to dance, but that's another story.) And God heard this - how could He miss it - and lo He became Bugged. And He spoke to the man, and He said, "Listen man, if I wanted Jimi Hendrix I would have created the guitar. Stick to the bass parts." And the man heard the voice of God, and he knew not to mess with it. But now he had upon him a passion for playing fast and high. The man took the frets off of the bass which God had created. And the man did slide his fingers upon the fretless fingerboard and play melodies high upon the neck. And, in his excitement, the man did forget the commandment of the Lord, and he played a frenzy of high melodies and blindingly fast licks. And the heavens rocked with the assault and the earth shook, rattled, and rolled. Now God's wrath was great. And His voice was thunder as He spoke to the man. And He said, "O.K. for you, pal. You have not heeded My word. Lo, I shall create a soprano saxophone and it shall play higher than you can even think of." "And from out of the chaos I shall bring forth the drums. And they shall play so many notes thine head shall ache, and I shall make you to always stand next to the drummer." "You think you're loud? I shall create a stack of Marshall guitar amps to make thine ears bleed. And I shall send down upon the earth other instruments, and lo, they shall all be able to play higher and faster than the bass." "And for all the days of man, your curse shall be this; that all the other musicians shall look to you, the bass player, for the low notes. And if you play too high or fast all the other musicians shall say "Wow" but really they shall hate it. And they shall tell you you're ready for your solo career, and find other bass players for their bands. And for all your days if you want to play your fancy licks you shall have to sneak them in like a thief in the night." "And if you finally do get to play a solo, everyone shall leave the bandstand and go to the bar for a drink."
WOW! Forgive my ignorance, but is this a piccolo purely because it is strung with octave strings? Or can it be tuned normally? Also, could you measure the neck width at the nut at 12th fret when you get the chance? I am seriously considering downsizing my entire existence to come up with the funds for this!
Sorry, I should have further explained in the OP/description (and included more precise specs.): OK ... the nut is just shy of 1.5" and at the 12th fret it's 2" .. at the 24th fret it's 2 and 3/8". String spacing at the bridge is 19mm. (nut @ 10mm, 24th fret @ 17mm) The neck profile is a flattened c/d (it's hard to say or show ) I could try to photograph and send to you if you could PM an email address. I did some measurements: at fret 24 the neck depth is c. 3/4-7/8" including the fingerboard. The neck/body depth (at the join, where you will see a rear strap-pin) is 1 and 5/8". In the photos this looks deceptively deep/rounded; it's not. It is (with the flattened back) a very slim, fast neck. Bass balances great when seated. it's not neck heavy at all; if I hold it right into the 'pocket' (at F24) then there is a very slight lean towards the body side (so the neck tilts up very slightly). ... RaNoFuNky, I realise you didn't ask for all these details but somebody from the USA did so thought it best to include as much as might be useful.

J.D. V. PARIS BASS - Piccolo 4 Short Scale Stunning short scale bass is a masterpiece from German luthier Johannes-Dieter von Paris (based in Göttingen) - when with 'Schack' - for the Frankfurt MusikMesse (2002). It demonstrates JD's masterful combination of top quality tone woods and the sound/playability is exceptional. The electronics feature 2 toggle switches that allow a choice between single coil and humbucking mode (zero noise issues - both modes). The 3-band electronics can be modified by flicking the internal controls (see pic.) to pre select the frequency of each of the 3 tone controls. The bass knob may be preselected within 100-300Hz. The mid tone knob can be preset between 400 and 1500 Hz, and the high frequencies range from 2 to 8 KHz. This extends the tone controls to a semi-parametric 3-way on board preamplifier. Deep growling mids, extreme punch, crystal clear top and crisp slap sound are just a few of the capabilities. There is a veneer of rosewood between the beautiful flamed maple neck + GonzaloAlves fingerboard and it's thru-body construction. The wooden truss-rod cover plate is engraved with the JDvP logo. The ETS tuning fork Bridge is a 3-dimensional string-through (option) version. The playability of this bass is incredible. It is joy and effortless to play - fast neck, shorter scale and amazing fretboard Specs: • High gloss nitro' lacquer finish • Thru-neck, flamed maple w/ inner rosewood veneer, 30.75" scale. • GoncaloAlves fingerboard, 24 frets, with rosewood veneer • Body wings 2-piece sandwich maple with flamed ash • Center block 3 piece ash/rosewood • 2 x Bass Tech Soapbar Humbuckers • 18V Andy Schack Electronics with Bass, Mid, High Tone controls (pre-selectable centre frequencies) • 2 PU single coil/humbucking mode toggle switches • Black Gotoh tuners, ETS 3D Tuning Fork Bridge • Weight: 6.4 lbs / 2.78 kg (!) Comes with a short-scale gig-bag (with good protection/cushioning) The condition is near mint. Only minor flaws are on the back on the electronics cover and near thru-body string holes, plus a slightly stiff pan-knob. Link to same instrument in Bass-Porn:- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=79737&hl=JDvP The links (there) are no longer working: apparently Johannes (DvP) might be returning to work with Andy Schacks’s new bass venture. Original price was €3400 (with similar/later basses going for €4000) – realise this is something of a special(ist) instrument (will probably give this a go on TalkBass) / SOLD

Looking to trim the Collection and complete/clear some projects ... it's getting out-of-hand (again) and need to make room for something(s) new (details to follow in the Porn section, if things work-out).... Modulus VJ4 bass (USA) with upgrade (and very high quality) Quilt maple top and Bartolini pickups/2EQ. Fiished in a very tasty caramel-translucent. Neck (composite - it's a Modulus) has a truss rod but has never needed adjustment. Looks and feels like a Jazz (c. 9.5 lbs) but with a much greater spectrum of sound(s). Excellent for slap / M.King stuff but can also be(come) much more mellow. Bass itself is in excellent condition (few, minor/superficial marks - nothing obvious or serious) and plays just as good as it looks. There is one small finish chip on the neck between frets 4-5. Original case - one corner has been damaged/repaired, but is pretty strong/sound. SOLD(traded)
