1. Blimey, hello from yet another of the Bromley contingent!
  2. I've got the Ibanez one. It has wheels so I can just pull it along behind me.
  3.
... which brings to mind that much-sung hymn: 'Hasta Siempre, Comandante'; its lyrics also rhyme in ABBA format.
The rumours that I recently changed my name from its Swedish original are unfounded. I wasn't Bjorn yesterday.
  4.
Indeed; Zappa had a slightly different take, too, which inspired Guevara.
That's easy for you to Che.
  5.
If he was, he was over the hill by then.
Well he did try out several of Frank Whittle's prototypes back in the day. (Elton John even wrote a song about it.)
  6.
This is quite true, but it's a shame for those musicians who aren't - for whatever reason - creatures of the road. Especially in the current climate of dwindling live audiences.
In the case of non-performing songwriters, it's a serious problem. No shares of ticket and T-shirt sales for them.
  7.
Wouldn't royalties be due to the rights-holders of Vivaldi..?
You mean Frankie Vivaldi, right?
  8.
I wonder just how many orchestra-pit players have an equivalent pension..? Hmm...
Perhaps not equivalent in monetary value, but those who have played on recordings will get income from PPL royalties.
  9.
Check out Maruzsczyk. They'll build to your spec, and some of the fretlesses they've been coming out with look stunning, and they're very reasonably priced. Look at this Jake..!
Drooooollllll......
  10.
Don't talk to me about Roundup, liquid of the devil and now classified in Canada as highly carcinogenic. And used as a dessicant on most common cereals in the UK...
...I prefer milk and sugar on mine.

  12. iLok gets a bad press but I've never had a problem with it. My only gripe is that it doesn't double as a memory stick for stuff like Waves licences.
  13. How did I only just discover this? http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=randomalbumplayer It's a script for iTunes that selects and plays a random album. If you're not a techie, don't be put off by the idea of "scripts", you only need to drag it to the right folder then it appears as a menu item. There are quite a few other useful scripts on that site. It also has excellent taste, having just selected Don Juan's Reckless Daughter: Jaco's finest hour, IMO.

    sold

Why am I even looking at this lovely creature? I don't need it, I don't even like Jazzes! #glwts
  15. PT 11 user here... I got it just before they introduced the subscription thingy, so I'll have an interesting decision to make if I want/need to upgrade. If I decide to jump ship it'll be for Studio One 3, which has some neat scratchpad and arrangement features, which are geared more to "creating" a piece rather than just recording, editing and mixing it - the latter being what Pro Tools does excellently.
  16. The photo seems to have disappeared from the OP
  17.
My example was of the music getting sold, so it wasn't the troubadour but the songwriter (or more likely, the publisher) getting paid. Likewise, with the dance bands, yes the bands got paid, but they in turn drove sales for the bandleader's records. Another example would be the juke box. That really helped push rock & roll, but the artist would only get paid once for the sale of the record, and wouldn't make anything (apart from a minuscule payment through PPL) for repeat plays, and yet, being on a juke box was a great driver of sales. I like your quote, but without the first you won't have a chance of getting the second.
You mention the PPL (for the performers), but don't forget the PRS (for the writers) and the MCPS (for the owner of the recording, usually the record company with a chunk going to the "act"). Jukebox plays would generate PPL and PRS royalties. And when it comes to the "but you'll make your money in merch sales", remember that writers and session musicians who aren't part of the signed "act" don't get any of that.

  19.
I don't know if we're trying to put too much value on streaming, should it not be viewed as a new way of discovering artists that you then go on to support financially via gigs, merchandise, or, at arms length, by giving them the popularity so they can sell branding rights etc?
The discovery/sampler model sort of works for the free level of Spotify, or at least in the form it took when I signed up (I haven't used it for a while). There is/was a limit of five plays for any single track, so I couldn't play Justin Bieber's new track 10 times a day without paying for the privilege.
  20.
And that's why I tried to put a financial comparison with Radio 1 - their cost per listen is 0.001p, so your 400 listens via streaming would have been worth 0.4p at Radio 1 rates, your getting 50 times that.
The difference is that the streaming service is on-demand, just as if you'd bought a recording. So it's more correct to compare the economics of streaming with those of purchase, rather than those of airplay.
Marcus Miller has always said he started playing bass to get some ... !!! I'll get me coat! B
Fnarr.
"Are these strings made of...catgut?..."
Eek!
Can't read music but is ok with tabbylature... Coat got.
Groan...
  22.
It would be better if people used single ads for each item and described the item using generic terms in the same logical order for each post title. Maybe a sticky with example format for subject title might help. Eg Type - make - model - year - colour 4string Fender Jazz 1977 red Would make scanning through a lot more simple and searching easier.
Careful now, that's sounding dangerously like common sense...
  23.
All good now. Like it, I'm listening whilst enjoying my first very lovely coffee of the day. Enjoying the smoothness of both the coffee and your tune.

Cheers! Not often one of my choonz gets called smooth!
For some reason this brought to mind the classic Gareth Hunt "blend and roast" hand gesture :-P
