1. I learn every note by memory even if it is a reading gig. If I can't play it all from memory, solo, then I'm not ready. I'll still perform it of course but I won't be happy that I'm under prepared.
2.
I really am sorry for my ignorance guys, butting having read the thread mentioned above on wiring the two pups in series, won't that just sound like both pick ups on full volume.... Be gentle with me....
No. Because that's in parallel and not series.
3. On the Bass Direct channel on YT. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPD1mEDgnpo
4.
Dave, I love improvisation. I think it's a dying art. Against my better judgement I recently went to an open mic. When I was called up me and the drummer started a groove improvising in G major 7th. We were waiting for the young guitarist to come in. He didn't come in. He walked over to me and to and says; 'I only know songs" ? Blue
Sounds like an awful lot of highly skilled classical musicians to me. I play in a local educational orchestra (and smaller ensembles) and the drummer / percussionist and me have a lot of pub gig experience. We piss about with the tunes as we feel like it (or up to the point we get told off!) The vast majority of the classical guys get upset when we are doing that, let alone when they are told they can improv! They seem to freeze, or play what is written with the odd added octave or rest! One of my mates is a cellist. Could sight read Grade 8 exam pieces in a dark room wearing sunglasses. She can't improvise worth a damn.Funnily enough the players of the "jazz" instruments (trumpet, clarinets etc) seem to be far better. I suppose there is more of a cross-over for those instruments. But the bassoons and cellos etc - not a chance.
5. To do justice to some tunes they are needed. You're not going to get a choir in or a string section for 2 songs in the list.
6. This has more heft than anyone needs http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=xpa4002&s=5 It's a permanent installation power amp but I know some who are using it in their rigs. - guitar and bass. They are about £1200 and sold to certified installers. There are ways though, of course!
7. My Helix sends an IR signal to the PA and a non IR signal to a power amp and cab. Complete control.
8. You might want to point out how much the LED and pickup / EQ upgrades are. As they cost a fortune! Lovely bass!
9. The bands I've played in have either had the Boss pedal tuner or the TC. I like the TC one. It's bright and works well on a low B. I wouldn't want it in the amp. In a dedicated preamp like my Helix is ok, but not in a regular head.
10. I really like my Darkglass. I have previously loved the Empress, and one day I will have another. At the cheap end I also really like the Marshall ED-1. Great value for money.
11.
Well... that's saved me some money
I think it gets very clean! Low gain, no drives. It's great.
12. That post could be the very definition of false equivalence.
13. See if Bass Direct have one and ask them to price match?
14. Funnily enough, I really like the foam cheap ones for when I'm singing. I find the extreme EQ change to be very useful. Rubbish for use listening to a loud gig of course.
15. Piano I think. But I really love the cello too even though I have never played one.
16. Standard gig punter response. "Can I have a go on your bass?" "Only if I can have a go on your woman." Seems to do the trick.
17. I'm not answering. Mainly because by 10am I will have changed my mind.
18.
Definitely not in the right price range. I don't even think they're made as well as they used to be. I wouldn't buy one of the newer shapes, they look kinda ugly in the pursuit of individuality. Just a personal preference, I'm sure they still tick a lot of boxes for a lot of people
There are rumours that Fender were "involved" in the new shape being introduced. Fender haven't tried it on with Sadowsky or Lull, presumably because the price points are so different. So if it is true, it must be because Sandberg were perceived to be taking market share.
19.
Sandbergs are lovely but are no longer in the right price range. £1900 is insane.
As said - £1350 ish without the relic paint effect.
20.
Disgustingly overpriced!
The hardcore aged ones have always been about that. Bass Direct have one at only £50 cheaper, and an un-aged at £1350 The aged process is expensive.
21. Stickiness is already going after a few hours noodling in front of the telly. Tension is a little higher than the rounds of the same gauge but I wanted a little more tension so that is great. Very much enjoying them. Will rehearse with them on Saturday and see how it goes then.
22. I don't think 5 string P bass players are "fiercely loyal" to Fender. It's just there is very little choice in the 5 string P bass market under about £1500 Above that and there is quite a bit of choice. Lull, Sadowsky, Sandberg etc
23. EMG's come with a standard Tone control. EQ systems are optional extras. My ray5 has EMGs in it. 2 vol, 1 Tone. Lovely
24. Oi! It was and still is a stunning instrument. The middle pickup that was in it was installed professionally, and the split outputs into 2 rigs was amazing.
